We explore how the distance that a Leyden jar discharges over is related to the amount of charge stored. Why does a static electric discharge result in a spark? We consider what electric fields do to the surrounding air and why it might become conductive.
The experiment explored in this video has high voltages involved and can give you a nasty shock so be careful if repeating and don't touch the nail at the top of the bottle until you have completely discharged the bottle.
