Why Does The End Of A Tape Measure Move-A Detailed Answer

In this video, I tell you why the end of a tape measure moves! Many people see this as a product flaw; however, it serves a definitive purpose. It moves so that you can get accurate measurements whether the tape measure is hooked onto something or pressed up against something. It expands to make up for the thickness of a piece of metal!

You forgot to mention that the tape itself is shortened by an 1/16 th of an inch to accommodate for the thickness of the metal so that when you are measuring from the Inside of something the 1/16 th metal thickness is accounted for in the true measurement. So now when measuring something on the Outside edge, starting from the pieces true edge, you'll have 1/16 th inch of air gap then the remaining 15/16 th inch of tape then so on, to give the true measurement again when measuring from the Outside edge.

The shortening of 1/16 of the tape is the key point but the video did not mention it at all. It just keep saying that the tape gives consistent measurements but how? Thanks for your explanation!

Summary: It moves to include or exclude the thickness of the tang in the measurement depending on pull measure or pushed measurement. Saved you a waste of 3 min.

Very good video! Essentially for some reason it didn't click that the measurement starts from the outside flat part of the hook. I was fixated on thinking the measurement started from the inside of the hook. I was thinking the movement should do the opposite to what it does (somehow making that work), but no. I'm glad you pointed out where the measurement starts from, because the video I watched before this one, left me still confused as to where exactly I was going wrong (I figured it out anyway, but yea. Then watched this one too). Oh, and yea that means the measurement markings don't start from 0 on the actual tape.

It doesn't move to provide consistently accurate measurements. It moves in order to be able to provide measurements with or without the use of the hook. That is the key to the movement, it is to compensate for the hooks width (as is mentioned in the video). The reason for this is that the hook is not always needed to make a measurement. For example, one way to use the tape without the hook is to measure the width or length of a room, you would butt the tape up against the wall to measure to the other end, in which case you do not need to use the hook. One example where the hook is usefull is measuring the length of a table, you would hook the table with the tape measure and measure its length by using the hook to hold the tape in place as you pull it along the tables length.

The thing is, after some time, especially cheap tape measurers, it moves more and more and every measurement becomes a 16th off, sometime more. It should never move but than a 16th. Sometimes it's small enough to not matter, but with things like glass, sometimes it's a bad thing.

still dont get it. If i hook the tape measure, The yellow tape is NOT at the edge of the item i am measuring. so it is out by several mm. how is that a correct measurement?

If I measure inside of something. Then I need to cut a piece to that measurement but by hooking the tape. Wouldn’t it be a different measurement. Slightly ?
@frankvee
@frankvee 3 жыл бұрын
No. If you measure the inside of something and you need something cut to that size, you would then use the hook to measure out that piece and cut to that same measurement using the hook to hold the tape in place. It should be exactly the same length as what you measured when you measured the inside.

I always figured Rosie the Riveter was doing a poor job all along. I mean, three rivets and there's still some slop in the measuring tape? In all seriousness, first time I inspected a measuring tape, I tested it for a 12" distance both pushing up against a block of wood and pulling from the end of a piece of wood. Both came out to a perfect 12". End of story.
