In which I discuss the new content added in the Curse of the Moon Quay update, and why it feels so off - as though it doesn't really fit into the rest of Don't Starve Together. Also, I briefly discuss the new Wickerbottom and Wortox refreshes.

Curse of the Moon Quay adds a number of boating upgrades to the game. I’m always eagerly anticipating these - anything to pad out the tediousness of sailing the world.
The first of these is the Grass Boat - a hastily thatched-together raft made of nothing more than plant fibers. This boat is smaller, and can’t be upgraded or built on in any way; oh, and it’s health is constantly draining. (although notably, it can’t spring leaks) {VERIFY} This tool might seem useless at the surface - why would I want to be constantly sinking on the open seas? Well, the grass boat is extremely cheap to make - 8 grass and 2 sticks is all you need. Meaning, if you’re a depraved resource hoarder like me, you’re always going to have the requisite ingredients on hand. So if you’re ever stranded on a distant isle - or, your main boat is about to sink - the grass boat makes an excellent panic button. It’s also quite handy if you see one of Pearl’s bottles near the shore in the early days, before you’ve obtained a wooden boat. If you’re particularly gutsy, and have lots of grass to repair the thing with, you can also use it to explore the ocean straight away - but this is pretty risky for obvious reasons. In this situation you’d probably be better off using Woodie’s goose transformation to search the seas.
Next on the list is the Cannon. Now, I won’t lie, I was pretty excited for a weaponised addition to your boat, but the Cannon, as it is right now, is kind of a letdown. It’s extremely pitiful when it comes to damage and range - feeling more like a glorified spud gun to fire. Especially considering that every single shot costs gunpowder and stone, you’d be better off just boarding your enemy and hitting them with swords, the old fashioned way.
There’s also the issue that there isn’t really anything to shoot with the cannons on the ocean - and although this update does add a new floating target to the game, it’s still much easier to deal with it using melee weapons.
Complimentary to the Cannon is the Rudder, a new boat upgrade which can be used to rotate your boat. Surprisingly enough, this was never a feature beforehand, and personally I don’t really see why this has to be it’s own structure, and can’t just be an inherent feature of the Steering Wheel. It doesn’t make sense in relation to how real boats work, and it’s also annoying having to account for yet another boat controlling item on your raft. That being said, it’s far from necessary, and is mostly needed for aiming cannons, which makes them extremely clunky to aim and fire, because by the time your boat has sluggishly turned around, your target has probably moved again.
The monkey curse is such a strange addition to the game, because as it serves, there’s not really any purpose to this. If you dislike your character choice so much that you’d rather play as a monkey, just- change character? The curse itself isn’t really punishing since you only need bananas to get rid of it, and guess what? Bananas literally grow in bushes right in front of the Monkey Queen, so calling it a punishment is a bit of an overdramatization. I’m going to assume that monkey-mode is going to get some other functionality in the future (perhaps to do with future updates), because I really can’t piece together why else it really exists right now.

the character literally sounds like a monkey when their text is viewed from another player. Guessing you don't know that cause you don't have friends (its' alright I don't have friends either I just join random servers and found this out lmao)

theres kind of.. a ridiculous amount of inaccuracies and intricacies missed in this video as a result of it having seemingly been in production before experimentation had been performed and updates had been released, to the point where I almost want to ask that you could reupload it? I mean... really.. If nothing else, i think its hard to miss the fact that, -you can build on the grass raft, its just not recommended, and that it takes 2 entire days to stink with absolutely no grass added to it -boat bumpers don't take up any space at all anymore -viewing the cannon as solely a weapon is very silly and myopic. it can be used in a variety of farms, most notably, but not limited to, instantly mining many marble shrubs, instantly hammering numerous giant crops. -the rudder's initial purpose was to rotate your boat so you could shoot cannons, but it still maintains a few niche uses with precision pinchin' winch usage. -the sea trawler doesn't need bait to catch fish. -this one's more opininated, but i quite frankly think the moon quay island taking a while to find is a bit of a ridiculous complaint. the entire point of the ocean is the fact that things spawn around you as you sail around and explore land or go around from bottle treasure to bottle treasure. There might be a conversation to be had about with regards to the sunken treasure's loot table, but regardless. If you haven't understood this gameplay loop for the ocean by now, _especially_ with the increased spawn rates of things like gnarwails in the update, I don't know what to tell you. Aside from that, it should absolutely have been noted that the moon quay very frequently spawns in a corner of the map, so if you know where to look, you can pretty reliably find it that way. Experimentation is important. -you describe the curse as not necessarily punishing because you only need bananas to get rid of it, but thats a weird way to look at it. You need bananas, as well as passage all the way to the moon quay in order to get rid of it, which means dealing with all of the remaining monkeys there, as well as possibly more raids than what was already pestering you and probably caused you to get cursed a bit to begin with. It definitely does its job of being a punishment that way. -the reason why the color scheme is different is because its essentially an entire island thats been transported from another realm...! I don't know how you can miss this idea, especially after acknowledging how all of the rest of the content that is from this world is of a matching color scheme! -the monkeys speak like regular monkeys when you're not a monkey because you can't understand them. When you're wonkey, you can understand them. Additionally, players seeing wonkey speak only see gibberish, and wonkey sees english speaking characters as speaking gibberish. Please experiment more! -this is one of the most damning pieces of the video. The pirate raids don't destroy your boat anymore, and they aren't initially violent until you attack them first, instead opting to snatch ~10 items before packing up and leaving you alone. This is so important, and the changes were around for long before the wickerbottom things happened, Please, why did you leave your statements about it in!! Forgive me if i'm being aggressive, but theres so many things in this video that are just plain wrong, lacking critical information about mechanics, or lack a lot of nuance, that I don't think making a pinned comment would do it justice.

@@primalflower7253 a lot of these are fair, however a couple of things: my videos are more meant to be entertaining than informative. I usually try to keep things vague in order to not provide direct misinformation but I know this isn't a perfect solution. since klei changes updates a lot after they get released I either have to a) release an early video that will ultimately have some errors or b) wait potentially up to a month, by which point all the views to do with the update will have dried up. also, I have personally vowed never to do a reupload of a video. If I get into the habit of deciding videos aren't good enough and reuploading them, that is what is called a treadmill problem. I will never finish old videos and be able to work on new things, because stuff in a game like dst is always changing, and I am never 100% happy with my final videos.

@@FreddoFilms But... this isn't an early video. This is a video long after the moon quay beta had ended, showcased clearly by the fact that you acknowledge the wickerbottom rework and display the new books in it's beta, about 3-4 days from _that_ ending, meaning that nearly, if not all of the changes/intricacies I had described were very much a thing by the time you uploaded this video. I'm aware these things take time, but... I think it might be on you for not taking out/redubbing the parts of the video that showcase pirate raids breaking down boats. In any case, this is a bit of a sad answer, its a little upsetting to see people in the comments section making up their minds about the content based on your opinions in the video that were 100% affected by how outdated the information in the video is.

I don't really see how the color palette of the island being different from ROT is a bad thing. It's a beach so it makes sense that it's bright, personally I think it looks nice.

"Hardcore gamerzzz" will always shit on any update that isn't omegalol op broken and completely rewrites the meta of the game. Moon Quay is a great update, the only thing lacking is a quick way to see or at least guess where the island is.

A lot of your criticism of this update feeling off can be explained quite easily, Klei has said that the updates this year are setting the stage for the next content arc. This isn't part of the return of them content arc or has anything to do with it (sort of), and lore will be revealed once we get the next content arc

The Cannon will aim towards the opposite direction from where you're standing so it isn't necessary to use the Rudder or have many Cannons in different directions. Also you can load the Cannon without dragging the ammo over it by right-clicking it if you have Cannonballs in your inventory.

@@FreddoFilms I've seen people use it for decorative purposes. It can also be used in case an Underwater Salvage is too close to land and the Pinchin' Winch is in a Boat's border, so you'll only need to rotate the Boat to retrieve it, though this is a niche use.

@@FreddoFilms At the early stages of the beta, the cannon position was fixed and you had to use the rudder to aim. It was later revamped.

Similar to the Merms and Pigmen, I think the monkeys on the Moon Quay are just natural denizens of the Constant as opposed to people who have been turned into monkeys. Wagstaff's influence on the quay is the portal but not the _whole_ island, and it's a little unfair to the game to give it shit for not explaining everything all at once; when DST's story is slow burn to build mystery. As for the color scheme, it's obviously because a beach with more cooler colors wouldn't fit with a tropical island. It works with the otherworldly lunar island, but not with a sandy beach.

Exactly. All the other RoT updates had consistent color palettes Bc they were related to the moon. The monkeys aren’t (besides wagstaff using moon energy to make the portal). The complaint about the game not explaining the entire lore of the wagstaff portal is so confusing to me. His ark has been going on for a while now this is just another step. It’s not a mystery if they just tell you everything.

It’s weird, almost every time I’ve seen a Wonkey speak while I was human, I could read the text, except for *once*. Not sure if it’s just me but if it isn’t I hope they make it more consistent, it’s a nice detail

the ocean is still mostly side content you CAN do but you dont exactly get rewards that make going out of your way. The rewards are in a weird tier where they are nice to have but not exactly impactful enough they make you want to get them ASAP (unlike the ruins) but hey thats just my opinion.

You can find some good ruin loot from sunken chests, and now w/ proper treasure maps; maybe no starcaller staffs but I always go treasure hunting as soon as possible

You can give Moongleams to the Unstable Portal in order to force it to spawn the daily resources, they added this in an early hotfix during the Moon Quay Beta. I was honestly surprised when i saw how much stuff you can get with some stacks of Moongleams. 14:48 glad to know im not the only one who finds Wickerbottom as a character annoying hahaha

Actually there is a way to finding the Moon Quay. If a pirate ship attacks your boat, you must be not very far from the monke island. Just explore the closest not mapped ocean area and you will find it. At least it worked for me.

Klei did mention the 3 content updates this year was setting the stage for the 2023 content ark. So it makes sense that they would be disjointed.

I feel like Klei's been trying to make the ocean feel stuffed with content like the main island for the better part of the last three years... and failed. It's just not fun exploring the ocean due to how restrictive and slow the boat is. In addition, the only two things that really enchance the gameplay are the Moon Island and salt. And now, these raids make it so exploring the ocean is EVEN more of a chore to do. I think the ocean could've been ten times better if only the boats were like the ones of Shipwrecked: fast, agile and responsive to the player's inputs.

There's a special feeling watch the stream before the video and enjoying the experience with you. BTW I'm KonMx_ on twitch. But, honestly even as a Wickerbottom main, the best thing from the rework will probably be the animation because we basically know nothing about her. Basically all we know about her is that she had a cat, she has insomnia, and she has a personal library and is a librarian.

in my opinion it seems that klei has been a bit lost, in what to do with the characters and how to make them interesting again. It's a bigger challenge to keep renewing the same characters, but to make mechanics where the buff you activate stops... it's kind of bad. I am a little afraid of the future of this game, because in Ds Solo, you can renew create a new world like SW and Hamlet, here you are not stuck in this Rog's world, and in a little while you can't implement anything else. Because it is limited. They have even turned wilbur into a curse character where he limits one inventory slot, and his status is bad. They could just use the portal as a source to play wilbur there.

Yeah. I agree. Every character refresh is based on a new unique crafting tab and it got really bland really quick. Instead of focusing on character traits, Klei focused on specific items you can craft that often only work for you, so they don't contribute to the "together" part of Don't Starve Together.

I mainly feel the game is getting... A bit samey and boring. You can make your own fun, but it really feels like dst is more of a sandbox experience compared to normal ds. It's really not hard to get food etc. The fishing trawler is yet another easy food addition, particularly broken with the new wicker fish book. Where's the creativity? Duo-based puzzles?

That and it feels like they aren't sure were to take the story next We've had bits of lore and story But now we've beaten the whole moon champion,...so whats next? I do wonder why it is that DST countinues the "main" story, at least in terms of Charlie taking over While DS Solo is mostly exploration And why it is they feel so focused to only give DST the big stuff

I think that part of a problem for some players is making this game easier and easier as if Klei plan was to get more players even with the cost of old ones. Character design and rework simply turn off some content while introducing full substitute. Look at maxwell - he suppose to be original full glass canon hero, low hp but with access to shadow armor and weapon. And now? You have Wanda or Wigfrid as a superior dps without the initial risk... Wolfgang hunger swapped into strenght meter so no issue within a fight. Wortox teleportation buff? Wurt can use almost everything to befriend Merms and so on and so on...

I am glad I wasn't the only one who was disappointed with the wickerbottom rework. It didn't rework anything, it didn't add variety, it added density; It only expanded on what wicker has already. I think that a correct way to make a character rework is to give the character a unique, fun and useful mechanic. While also giving them a special hindrance (like wanda, warly and wormwood)

I mean, the new books are really neat, it's not really a rework (honestly, wickerbottom didn't really need it much), but also they did give her a special downside. If any foods are stale or rotting, they won't give her health at all and would drain her hp instead.

Ok ok. I like the update, but I fully decked out my boat and still got my ass kicked by crab king. Things were fine while I was just shooting him with cannons and dodging his attacks. But then he just started healing and there was nothing I could do. Crab king needs a rework. But until then I guess I’ll stick to killing him with 20 killer bees.

I feel like klei is probably working on crap king, they are just also making content updates, while trying to figure out how to make crab fun, or they will add more ship progression that becomes basically necessary for the fight, like fighting shadow pieces with a spear and grass armor.

A strat I found to be useful (if you are mediocre at dealing with the monkeys) for getting the monkey island plants was to have the monkeys steal the plants and then dig up the X to have all the plants transported to the main land. Also you can find the X by just walking around the main island.

About the portal thingy... You don't need to wait over the portal to get stuff you can give the portal moon gleams and it will give you all the stuff you need

as a theory, i'm pretty sure wagstaff spawned in a portal and threw in a couple pounds of sand, and some monkeys, and just turned out the auto item produce on the portal. those monkeys built and planted everything

thematically, it makes some deal of sense for the update to feel a bit disjointed from everything else, given that it's Wagstaff trying to force his way into the Constant, or, at least, i'd think it would be.

The update really doesn't feel off to me, your criticisms just kinda felt like nit picking in my opinion, but I do agree with you that Wonky feels like a pointless punishment. From the moment I heard about him I really hated the idea of it, you take a random event that's already pretty brutal, then you punish the player for fighting them off by turning them into a completely different character until they remove the curse

the rudder can help adjust the position of your pinch & winch, but I’ve rarely needed to use it; best used on a Nautopilot boat where wavy jones won’t touch it

A tip I found about the Moon Quay is that monkeys don't go out at all during winter. You can just go then and have no problem collecting the portal's stuff, with the exception of that single monkey that comes out of the portal from time to time.

@@5uperM Same could be applied to some of the challenges the game throws at you. Tempature, sanity or even character downsides. While I still dont think Wonkey is as refined as those challenges are but its still important to remember all or most challenges are pretty much like that. Whats the point of temperature? Or sanity?

@@Blane811 Well for tempreature or sanity you can't just nullify it as quickly as the curse. The only way the curse is effective is if you get attacked at sea. On the island there's really no danger.

I hate it. I tried to do some cool boats and then they come crash my ship and either kill me or give the things I can't get out of my inventory. I couldn't swim straight to the lunar Island before they attacked me

FYI cannons are actually useful in boat combat. It takes two shots to immediately sink another ship. This means you can sink a boarding party before they reach you, and their trinkets will sink while the rest of the loot floats. Not to mention nowadays they are used in various OP farms (EX: mass shadow pieces farms)... This being said, I am sending this ONE YEAR after this video was released sooooooooooooooooo yeahh.

anyone notice the map gen is messed up since this update i swear i be getting dfly and oasis mix into other biomes like the oasis was actually not even in the biome but a little ways away in a tree biome and the mosiac biome had biomes after which isnt suppose to happen and one time there was like 6 biomes connected to get in a boomerang shape going back to the portal where u could just make a boat and get to the biome at the end

Honestly, if Wolfgang's update was the most divisive, Wicker's update is the most disappointing in my opinion. It's like if WX's update added 5 more types of gears for him to much on and that's literally it. I wish she would get a genuinely interesting and impactful one, because thematically and personality-wise, she is amongst the most interesting character to me. I mean, a smart but cocky librarian who thinks she knows everything is very unique. Also, I don't know why people find her annoying. _Watch Gravity Falls and meet a _*_real,_*_ obnoxious female main character, that will most definitely make you rethink your ideas on what annoying means..._

Yeah. Wickerbottom rework is basically "-added bunch of books and half of them is not really good. -added a bookcase so you will craft every book anyways to use it once in a blue moon. -nerfed wickerbottom."

The Grass raft is capable of being built upon, as well as upgraded with Ship attachments. It even has the added perk of being incapable to recieve holes. I presonally attribute the difference in style to the fact that this island and its inhabitants came from a different dimension thx to Wagstaff's shenanigans (perhaps an attempt to escape?). Thou I must admit, the portal's outline colour-scheme is a rather odd choice.

It’s a good update the dock kit is prob the best part iv built to lunar isle so there is just a nice walkway from base. Also the banana farm and recipes are strong once you been to the Island.

I think what I dislike about it is how player-hostile the whole thing is. Especially the Accursed Trinkets. The fact that they add themselves to your inventory just because you had the audacity to defend yourself... the fact that the curse already begins to apply and you can't drop them even if you don't have 10, and the fact that although the island is usually (not always, but USUALLY) nearby it doesn't get revealed when you need it... It makes the entire experience incredibly unfun and takes agency completely away from the player. With Deerclops, you can fight him on your own terms. With Fuelweaver, you have to actively explore the deepest depths and brave a lot of hazards to reach him. With the Celestial Champion, you need to actively summon it. With the Moon Quay content, it happens from the sea equivalent of a low-grade hound attack. Basically, rolling badly on a pair of dice. It's not even a challenge. Nor does it have any substantive rewards. It is 100% only an annoyance and nothing more.

Theoretically, the monkey island is not from this parts of constant so it's quite to be expected for it to look odd I also really don't like switching character mechanic because it's so op... But I do like using wonkey to both use warly's advantages and deal with his disadvantages 😎

I find it funny reading this only now. I was an avid dont starve player in 2014 -2015. had some recent runs in the past year because of hamlet. but my entire time anticipating DST was all for nothing when i first played it, as nothing about it felt like dont starve. everything then, felt off. now in 2022, the new update feels off? lol.
