When I left my ex, I left behind her cat that had bonded to me. A month later she called and said, 'come get your cat, I haven't had a nights rest since you left'. I love that cat. She loves me.

My cat used grooming as a method of soothing me when I was especially upset when I was a teenager. I was depressed and very nearly suicidal and whenever I came close to that threshold, he’d insist on cuddle time and just groom me until my mood improved. He was my angel and I’ll never forget how many times he saved my life. RIP Tig.

My siamese used to give me love bites (bite and head shake). I started saying "Ow!" and ignored her when she did that until she figured out I don't like it. Then she started giving me kisses instead so I told her thank you and pet her every time so now I get kisses instead of bites 🥰 And now she knows the word "kisses" 😂

I should say "Ow!" too. I don't really mind the love bites, but I'm getting confused in the communication, if it's a "love bite" or a "stop bothering me" warning. So I generally already pause the petting. Maybe the "Ow!" could clue her into the cause of the break, so that she stops it.

my gorgeous Tiger, a country rescue who was uncared for & would regularly 11km to the local Chicken Treat for food & company, so I had to learn VERY quickly that I just had to let her climb on things, as she could no longer go outside & run free now living a the city & about 800 meters away from a busy hwy. Anyhoo.. she will often sleep by my head on nights when I have seizures in my sleep , keeping watch over me & bites me to wake me if they get too protracted. I can control them better when I am awake & she's aware of this. She used to come up & sniff my face when she could pick up that I was about to have a seizure... one time she wouldn't let me leave to head of to spend time with my family, as she would not stop sniffing my face! After 20 minutes I had to force her to stop so I could leave in time.... 2 hours later I experienced THE worst seizure storm that I'd had to date, it lasted for HOURS. So after that I would listen when she'd sniff my nose. Now she knows that I know the warning signs, she's stopped diagnostically sniffing me, but still watches over me, or comes into the room I'm in when I'm trying to ward them off. She's the best $250 I have EVER spent, & not just for the seizure warnings.

@@helenafranzen9828 uh no. you dont have to walk cats, you dont have to pick up and carry their shit in a bag. cats can fend for themselves except in terms of food. unless they re outside cats. i dont have to walk my cat 4 times a day for 30 minutes per walk. i dont have to pick up the poop and put it in a bag and walk around with it. THAT is being a slave. you re a slave to dogs. not to cats. cats respect your boundaries. dogs dont. if you ignore a cat, the cat realizes you need some alone time, if you ignore a dog, the dog will annoy you even more. Mosey was a Maine Coon mix that was the biggest cat I ever had. He was a reserved gentleman who required a pet before work, acknowledgment when I cam home, and “his” corner of the bed. One night I was watching Titanic, and burst into tears at the end - I was possibly the only person who hadn’t seen the movie, and Rose returning to Jack did me in. He got up from “his” chair, walked over, and sat down beside me with a grave expression on his face. Slowly, he raised one paw and put it on my arm, as if he was trying to comfort me. I cried all over his fur, which he didn’t think much of, and that night, long after the waterworks were over, he came up to the pillow, gave me an uncertain look, quickly head butted me and returned to his corner of the mattress. It was like living with a shaggy reserved uncle, but I loved that cat. Had him 16 years, he’s been gone 15, but I still miss that cat.

Yep, mine too. I've also found out if I say "easy, it's okay, you're ok" when he's freaked out about something, he will calm down. Like the time I took him in the back yard on a Flexileash and he BOLTED under the table to run back inside, so I dropped the leash. But it got tangled up in the patio furniture, and he FLIPPED OUT. I couldn't get near him because he was like Edward Scissorhands in a blender, but that had the effect of tying the leash around HIM, which only (very understandably!) increased his panic. So I told him that, and he stopped thrashing around (and just laid completely still) long enough for me to untangle him. And then he ran behind the washer. :(

Love the "head bonk" my cat gives me. Peak of affection also causes desire to mark with the scent. Being cat's property is a complement. It's possessive and similar to human love. And speaking of toxic things - make sure you clean your floors with safe chemicals, because the cat will pick them up, lick itself and consume what's on the floor. Be conscious of where the cat spends its time and what might get on its fur. Keep the environment safe and clean.

My 3 year old kitty lost her mama when she was only 3 weeks old. So, she still acts like she's a baby. She doesn't lick, but she really loves being petted and she loves when my 15 year old cat licks her. She is definitely in kitten mode still. My 15 year old cat left his mama at an appropriate age, so he has been happy to take on the daddy or older sibling role for my young cat. He just loves washing his little buddy. Both of my cats make tons of biscuits on me. But fortunately neither of them licks me much. Probably because I don't encourage it. My 3 year old cat was very bitey when I first got her, though. She was very easily triggered. So I learned not to overstimulate her. I pet her very gently and slowly. And I keep my fingers together. That way it doesn't look like I'm reaching toward her with claws extended. And I never ever play with her with my hand. Toys are for playing. Hands are for pets. She is no longer bitey at all. Just snuggly now.

Wow cool.. I can't hold myself to not using my hand for play and pet her aggressively. You know, the feeling of "OMG she is so cute I want to pinch her cheeks, rub her belly, etc" 😭 but yeah she becomes more bity when it comes to play time with me
@anyascelticcreations

@@somebody3847 I've never done that with any of my cats. I don't feel that kind of urge to "pinch her cheeks and rub her belly". I naturally want to be gentle with mine. Partly because I would hate for someone to treat me that way. I would lash out too if someone did. So, I don't do that to my cats. But I also worked in the veterinary field for years, including when I first got cats. I was taught very early on that if you play with them with your hands you are teaching them to bite. I also learned at that time that cat or dog teeth on a person is not okay. Especially in the veterinary field. We were taught how to avoid being bitten instead. And part of that was to not antagonize them like that with our hands. When I want to play with mine, I use a toy. And if I need to physically love on them, I pet them gently, hug them if that doesn't bother them, and all of mine learn to like kisses. But none of mine learned to wrestle with my hands because I never did that with them.

My best friend “Roy” lost his mama just after birth. His mama left her litter outside a doctors office and I got him at 4 weeks old. Roy and I would battle. He would try to eat my $140.00 sandals. I don’t think he wanted to eat the sandals, he just wanted the attention. I could not play with him enough. Every time Roy started licking me, I would lick him back and he did not like that. Roy grew into an enormous cat that was very clingy. He cried whenever I left for work. He died of cancer at 12. My wife and I cried for weeks after he left us. He was a big part of our life.

I finally learned after 50 years of cat/dog/pet ownership, that the expectations we place on our pets simply does not exist. Especially cats. You cannot love a cat until it loves you. But, oh, you can love a cat to death. I am so regretful I just didn’t know enough. If you have human children, you accept that you must Accept any fault, any bad behavior, (see cute Prince Louis). Well, our pet cats are the same. They don’t, as Prince Louis, see they are being obnoxious. He was just being a normal 4 year old. NOTHING MORE. my former cat molly would only lick me when i was upset or sad. i’m convinced it was her way of taking care of me. she followed my parents home shortly before i was born, so for the first 18 years of my life she was a constant companion. she followed us when we walked the dogs, brought us chipmunks and moles and birds and rats. in old age she was very frail, but till the very end she was still trying to protect and care for me. she lived a long life for an indoor outdoor cat, and sometimes it feels like she held on just long enough to see me recover from my severe depression and anxiety. it feels like she didn’t want to leave while i was still in danger, even if that danger was invisible. anyways, just wanted to share because i found your videos after adopting a traumatized rescue cat and you’ve been so helpful, but the comments of people sharing their stories of the love and companionship their cats provide always pulls at my heartstrings and reminds me of molly. i’m slowly building up trust with fonz, my new friend, and i can’t wait to have that bond with him.

The other thing I've noted with my cats (I've had them around for 50 years now... gads...) is part of the common "biting" behavior is focused on our nails. If you watch a cat grooming themselves, the reason for this becomes immediately apparent - they bite their own claws to strip off older "claw sheaths", the outer layer of keratin/horn that falls apart as the claws grow from the inside out. From your cat's perspective, your nails are claws - and keeping the claws fresh and sharp is important. So they're "helping" you by trying to pull your outer "sheaths" (that we don't actually have) off. It's just social grooming behavior. Congratulations - you're now a cat. In your cat's mind, anyway. 🙂

I don't mind cats licking me, but when my cats bite me I usually transition to play fighting mode. "You dare?!!!" Then, after a bit of friendly roughhousing, there usually isn't any more biting. And over time, repeating this tactic for maybe a month or so, the cat will still lick me but not bite. And if they want to roughhouse, they know how to start that. Of course, this depends greatly on how smart the cat is. But I think I've been fortunate in that respect.

He didn't mention play. Anyone watching kittens knows that they play wrestle, bite, and rake with with each other all the time. Not hard (especially if you have fur), but hard enough to scratch human skin. This instinct helps them to learn how to fight and defend themselves. When a trusted person pets a cat in a playful mood it can often trigger a grab and bite, especially if you pet their belly which triggers their defense-play instinct the same way tickling a child does.

Having a cat is like raising a permanent two year old child. I've experienced both male and female feline companionship. My current bean is able to understand multiple languages and he loves learning new things. I had to baby proof my apartment for him because he gets into everything. He's very curious. I was able to teach him to set and to not put his nose into food and water. Now he sets on the side and watches and he asks if he can sniff things. He also made a routine with me where I have to kiss him if he asks me for a kiss. I don't know how he learned to kiss he kissed me the first time we met and he doesn't want to stop. 🤷❤️ He treats me like I am his cat mom. My other cat Sassy didn't treat me like that. She treated me like I was her friend and caregiver. I don't know if it's because Ginger Beans is male. He also is very social, he loves people hugging him and laying in their laps. He has one favorite person, my best friend and neighbor. Ginger Beans cry's if he doesn't get to hug him and kiss him while he visits us. Everyone says it's like Ginger Beans is a cute chubby furry child with rabbit feet. LoL

That's what I hate most about having pets: the loss. I've had two kitties since junior year of high school. They've been outdoor cats almost all their lives, but I spent a lot of time with them as kittens and still do outside when they're around. They're so very sweet, but they're 15. Every time one's gone, I worry. Our sweet boy just had a bad eye infection over the summer. The third eyelid was up and everything, and the vet was afraid it was cancer. Fortunately, he beat the odds and the antibiotic worked within a day, he's just fine. Those cats have been with me so long, I dread the day one gets sick for real, or dies outside. We had a Persian cat get ripped open by a wild animal when I was a child, she wasn't even an outside kitty really, but it just happened shortly after we moved to a new house. Our dog hurt another sweet kitty when I was a bit older, and we had to put him down. That was sad, as he'd jump on my bed at night sometimes, and he loved to hide places and it was fun to try and find the little guy. It doesn't matter if you've had a pet six months or 15 years, losing them is hard, but I'm sure Lydian is waiting for you, and watching over you in the meantime 😀

I'm so sorry for your loss. My son rescued 3 kittens from a cardboard box in a car park. The vet aged them at 3 weeks. I had to pipette feed them and I didn't know whether they would survive. They did. There was 2 boys and 1 girl. Buddha had a stroke and died a few months ago. His brother sudi and sister autumn are still going strong. They are 15 now and I know we probably don't have long so every minute counts now. They are beautiful bodhisattva who have taught me a lot over the years. I believe they've been reborn and sent to someone that really needs them. Don't cry for them, imagine them snuggling into somebody chi

My late cat was a huge licker. She’d lick my arms until the skin was raw! I always found it incredibly cute because she’d always have this lovey-dovey expression while doing it. I rarely let her lick me enough where it injured me though, i’d just shoo her away before it’d get to that point. Didn’t always work but you know 😂 I miss her so much everyday. 💔 Now my new kitty is a big biter 😭😂

I have a cat that acts like my dog. As a kitten he watched my dog give me "kisses" when i got home everyday. Now my cat does the same. And he's a "in my face constantly" cat. It's not like he's grooming. He literally just walks up and gives me "kisses" like a dog. I think He's figured out he gets way more attention being constantly in my face. He's always with me at home. I play with him more that the dog! Feathers on a string. Tossing a mouse toy around. Trying to burn his extra energy off. He even plays "fetch" he's learned from watching me and the dog. I think he's a little dog in a cat costume. 😂 Gosh. I love my cat! ❤ Great video Jackson. I take all your advice to heart to keep my cats having a healthy happy life. Thank you.

As someone on the Spectrum I totally get the overstimulation part, as even the normal touch of a t-shirt on my body can get overstimulating sometimes. We also have a cat I like to joke is an 'autistic kitty' because they're very particular and get overstimulated by touch very easily, and we can tell because they move a particular way and vocalize a certain way when they start to get to that 'STOP' point.

I have a male orange tabby (really more like the toner ran out and it's kind of tan). He was from ferals in the backyard. He was friendly as a very small kitten rubbing around my feet, talking up a storm, etc. He is 2 now and still is all about my feet. Follows me everywhere...from a dead sleep to "Oh I heard you were going somewhere, where are you?" He likes to lay on my chest facing me or across it and rub around my neck and face. I have to pay attention when he lays on my chest and starts sniffing my face etc. because he will seem so nice and lovey and then he will try a little nip of my nose, cheek etc. I will look at him and watch and if I see his mouth start to open for a nip, I say, "NO BITING". Not in a loud or angry voice but in a different tone from the "glad to see you" voice. I really need him to stop the nip/bite. I know it's not meant to hurt, but mama had fur and I don't. I feel it. I have started to just move him away from me but part of me thinks that's mean and he might think I don't love him. I know that is silly. Sorry for being so long-winded.

@@Svol09 . Owning cats has it's rough patches too ... Such as ripping up your blinds or tearing down the curtains (by climbing), knocking cereal boxes off the fridge, scratching furniture even though you've bought scratch pads, etc. Using you as a pin cushion by using your lap or head as a launch pad, knocking things off shelves or countertops to the floor, etc etc. I Love my feline fur babies and have had to "catproof" my home because They're the Boss!! My friend's cat as a kitten was obsessed with licking the face of anyone trying to sleep. I was cat sitting, and missed the cats I grew up with, so I didn't want to kick the kitten out of the bedroom. Instead, I got a wash cloth, and put that over my face, and slept like that. 😂 It worked! (And he did outgrow it eventually.)

Interesting question! I'm definitely tuning in. In my slice of the world it only happens during grooming. I suspect the nibbles/bites have to do with overstimulation and the licks that directly follow are to say, "Hey, it's not personal. I still like the attention. Just a little less from the areas that make me uncomfortable and I'll be back to purring in no time."
@Smorgasbord.

On second thought, that's not quite what JG was saying. Apparently, some cats lick, get too stimulated(?!) then begin biting. I'm here for it though; happy to learn whatever he presents. 😻

@@hannahreynolds7611 they are not foreign alien combatants. Your cat wants your love no matter what. To learn and accept the subtle nuanced cat gestures will reward you immensely. Just let go. Like some of the others, I also used the "ouch!" and retreat method to stop my Koda-cat from biting me. It wasn't a conscious thing, but it worked. Now, we both try to not let it reach that point (she starts bapping at my hand just before the bite stage as a warning), but if there's a miss, and she bites... after I've done the "ouch" and pull my hand away, she'll occasionally reach out and give my hand a quick lick or two before going on to do other things. Sort of an "Oops, sorry about that" gesture. Cats can also be pretty good with nuances as well. My husband's cat Batsy quickly learned that we had no problems with her kneading (smergling?) while we were wearing heavier fabrics like denim, but would yelp and gently remove her if she tried when we were wearing lighter weight clothes like, thin pajamas and the like. In a very short period of time, she picked up the habit of making a very light "test probe" as soon as she got into a lap. Initially, we helped with verbal cues: "It's okay" or "not now" with different tones of voice, but it didn't take her long to be able to assess whether the lap in question was wearing kneading fabric, or "just sitting for the attention" fabric. I miss her, but we did have a good fifteen years with her.

Sophie randomly flops over, death clutches me then licks and bites me all over I was wondering if it was due to stress or in anger, good to know just a basic cat genetic trait and habit she clearly picked up from Darcy. 😊

My cat, Tiger, who is on the other side now, used to lick me sometimes with a rough tongue but at other times with a soft, gentle tongue. The soft tongue was so gentle and sweet, as if she knew to be careful with me. When she would use her papillae, I would tell her "No use soft tongue!" You didn't mention it, Jackson, but I think they are capable of doing it softly too.
