Subhanallah such a touching story. Many ppl think that just because Allah does not answer their dua after 1 year, 2 years, 5 years, 10 years that Allah does not love them. But they forget that Allah is The All-knowing, The All-Wise and wants His servant to strive for His sake.

The golden egg is like a metaphor. (the whole story is). the person after guiding so many people to the Door of Allah, (which in this story is treasures and riches) the person felt sad. So, the egg symbolises Allah giving him something from the Door, but not opening it. Because if the door was opened, he may never come back. It's a sign from Allah that he has indeed not ignored him, but withheld from him as this was for his own good. He perhaps saw the potential in him to be something much greater and due to his Ikhlas chose him to be a Daee, to call other people to the door of Allah.
