Each time we achieve success, we also envision and hunger for a potential that we never knew existed. It’s amazing, it’s exciting, it’s energizing; it’s wonderful. But it’s also anxiety-provoking, identity-shaking, and exhausting; it’s hell. Based on a two decade career in executive search interviewing thousands of the most successful people in the world, Laura Gassner Otting explains why success doesn’t bring happiness, and how to take advantage of the “wonderhell” that it presents instead.
Laura Gassner Otting has spent 25 years studying leaders and stewarding them through massive moments of career and life shift, whether as a political appointee in Bill Clinton’s White House, the founder and president of an international executive search firm, or in her current role as an author and keynote speaker. Her last book “Limitless: How to Ignore Everybody, Carve Your Own Path, and Live Your Best Life” was a Washington Post bestseller and was named by Robin Roberts as one of Good Morning America’s Favorite Books of the Year. She is a regular contributor to The TODAY Show, Good Morning America, and Harvard Business Review. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

This is a great example of why highly motivated and busy people need to do a whole lot of work on their inner selves. In my experience people stay that busy because they're trying to outrun something within themselves and THAT is why they'll never be happy. Do the inner work friends.

Happiness is achieved when we realise we have enough. Instead of more, more, more until we die, at some point we should say to ourselves, enough is enough. Then we can be happy. Then we can enjoy the fruits of our labour, enjoy what we have.

I love the concept of the "burden of potential". I talk a lot about how visibility equals opportunity (business, career and personal.) But not everyone wants what visibility and opportunity brings to their doorstep. It's a huge amount of responsibility and more work. It's not a destination unto itself and we need to consider the costs of that opportunity and the potential. Bravo, Laura!

Otting's talk on the relationship between success and happiness is a breath of fresh air in a culture that often prioritizes achievement over wellbeing. As she points out, true happiness comes from living a life that aligns with our values and passions, rather than just accumulating wealth, status, or achievements. Her message is a powerful reminder to prioritize what truly matters in life.😌

I think it's important we define "success" - because it truly looks different for each person. There is the success we have been taught about, conditioned to strive for and then there is the success of our species. There's a HUGE difference I think. Do we as a human need to be ALL the things? Do we need to reach our "full potential" based on some narritive that's been tearing families and communities apart for too long, just to make a buck, to have a legacy that helps the ego to feel as if it's accomplished something...

Success can be isolating, disconnecting us from the things that truly matter - our relationships, our communities, and our sense of purpose. What a terrific talk! Her poise, her way with words, are magical. Two of my favorite quotes are --- 1. Do you know why internal candidates always leave if they don't get the job? Because the very process of interviewing for the bigger job means that once they saw themselves in this new way, even if for a moment, they couldn't unsee themselves in this new way. 2. Instead of seeing success as an end point, but a way point, not a final destination, but as a portal to what is possible.

I love how the speaker talks about redefining success as a waypoint rather than a final destination. It's so true! We need to embrace the discomfort and uncertainty of wonderhell because that's where the real growth happens. Success isn't about reaching one big finish line; it's a series of lessons and losses along the way.

Listen to these words folks!! And if you like what you hear pick up a copy of her book “Limitless”. Especially if you’re currently feeling stuck!

This is the perfect next evolutionary 'waypoint' of the Limitless track. LGO continues to pace ahead and make the way to and through what is possible easier. If you got this far being Limitless then you should join me looking forward to more on WonderHell and beyond.

An interesting and thought-provoking talk. Too many people are too focused on an artificial success, an end point that doesn't exist and certainly doesn't define success. It's so important to enjoy the journey.

I don't know about being happy but i think i want to be satisfied. When, where or how long would it take, doesn't matter. If by the end, i'll look back and remember everything with a smile on my face. Then, maybe i have lived it all.

I've accomplished things I never thought possible. Success feels incredible, and it opens doors I never even imagined. But it also fuels my hunger for more. It's a constant drive that pushes me to set bigger goals and achieve even greater things.

It's fascinating how success brings out a sea of turbulent emotions. We go through moments of doubt, vulnerability, and uncertainty. But these emotions can actually be helpful allies in our journey.

I loved Laura’s last book, Limitless, and can’t wait to read Wonderhell. It’s scary how well she understands human psychology and why we tend to talk ourselves out of the steps that might lead to our success.

Thank you Laura for being so candid about the way your achievements don't always equal happiness. It can't be easy to reflect on your life in this way and then talk about it in front of so many strangers/the entire internet

It's pretty easy to get swept up in something that occupies all your energy, especially when everyone around you is praising you for your achievements and success. Makes it hard to stop and look at whether or not it's serving your true self.
