Except for a brief period right after the Civil War, the US never really took up the practice of traditional military parades. Some of the reasons for this is because the Founders viewed a large standing army as something to be avoided if the threat of some future tyrannical govt were to take power, using the military in the way that European and other countries had done for as long as civilization had existed. The army was always deliberately under funded, it's formations scattered up and downt eh east coast, and later across the continent on outpost duty. After conflicts, no other nation de-militarized faster or more deeply that the US. For all the power brought to bear against Germany and Japan in WW2, few people realize that in 1939, just two years before Pearl Harbor, the American Army had only about 175,000 men and no tanks or armor and very little artillery. Compare that to 4 million Germans and about the same French. American forces in WW2 grew to 11 million, but by 1949 was down again to under 1 million. it would have been far less, but the US was faced with being the only coutry left un dmaged by the war, and was facing Communist forces both in eastern Europe and China. The Russians knew we were weakened and that's why they pushed North Korea to invade South Korea - and they almost won. The US was essentially isolationist to the core, and only funded an army capable of frontier garrison duty. The only places where military spit and polish was observed and parades took place was at West Point, The Citadel, and Annapolis. Washington DC had a garrison force that was primarily for inspection and parade in front of foreign dignitaries. Thus, America never developed the tradition of huge displays of government power. The only time America did that was when Theodore Roosevelt sent the US Fleet around the world on a meet and greet tour, to show off the new Great White Fleet to both enemies and friends.

america does tend to do some parades after large wars, e.g. WW1, WW2 and then right after the Gulf War with the Washington Parade
@OutnBacker
@OutnBacker Жыл бұрын
@@tricksor6589 Yes, but few and far between. We do nothing public on an annual basis. Such displayes are confined to military bases where family and some public guests are allowed. Other events may be municipal parades for holidays, etc, but nothing huge and flamboyant. Another somewhat unique aspect of the US military is US uniform. Patterns are deliberately low key, with very little in blaze or decoration - unlike so many other nations. When the uniform of the day is specified, ALL personnel from top generals to privates wear the same uniform - which are often simple utilities. Exceptions would be for Pentagon postings or dioplomatic events where a business or formal appearance is expected.

So what happened to US armed forces after 1949? It seem to have ballooned since then into the largest and most funded army ever in the world. Always thought that is why US was not into parades 'cos it did not need parades to pomp things up any further. It already has the largest, most powerful army.
@OutnBacker
@OutnBacker Жыл бұрын
@@bummers As I said above: After WW2, the US was the Last Man Standing, and was essentially the only viable industrial economy on earth. However, evil was not extinguished. The Soviet Union was deeply damaged, but they were determined to fill any and all voids of power anywhere in the world - even though their eoconmy could not produce enough food for themselves on a yearly predictable basis. Russians went hungry while the Communists fed Cubans and Chinese Communists. Thus, the US had to be the oft used term - Policeman of The World. This role was forced upon the US even though at the same time, American leaders saw great opportunity in filling the vacuum. America was the first country to defend South Korea in 1950, and took over the role of the French in Vietnam, unfortuneatly. The French warned Eisenhower not to go in, but Kennedy won the election of 1960 instead of Nixon, and the rest is tragic history. Many doubt that Nixon would have committed troops, preferring diplomacy, which was his expertise. So, America did not treally have the opportunity to stand down its military after WW2 because of the massive pressure from Communism in the form of the Cold War. It is only because of America's diverse and free economy that enough taxes are produced to fund a military on the scale and complexity of the United States. Although the US was among the richest nations prior to WW2, that wealth exploded upward exponentially after the war due to America being the only producer en masse. And so, the money required to build and mainatin such forces increased as well. This is very basic explanation, with lots of points and counter points, but I hope it helps .
