I am also an English teacher (currently a stay-at-home mum) and I would like to thank you for voicing feelings and opinions I didn't realise I had. Now that I am a bit older, I no longer feel like smiling all the time and creating 'fun' lessons, I want to help those who want to be helped. I have no desire to be a clown. 🙂

For me as an Eastern European your style is pretty normal. When I grew up nobody was smiling much in normal conversation (they laughed at jokes etc. but that's another thing), teachers were just like you, strict. You can't win. Whatever you do, you will always have someone who will bring it up as a covert criticism of your character, if not a blatant one. For example, I smile a lot and laugh a lot, not every single time, I can be serious too but most of the time I am lighthearted face to face and I get some people telling me that I "get on their nerves" because of that and on those occasions when I might be serious, you can nigh on guarantee you will get one other person who will say to me "oh cheer up John for god's sake, you're depressing me".....blah blah blah. As the late Ricky Nelson used to say in his 'Garden Party' song, you can't please everyone, so you got to please yourself.

a lot of people here are expressing their liking for your style of teaching and i'd like to say i really agree with that! i think it's all well and good to make some effort to not look inapproachable, but on the other hand it can so often be overdone. personally i find it distracting when a teacher is too perky and seems to care more about being seen as likeable than about delivering the information effectively. it is precisely this straightforward, no-nonsense approach that i think makes your videos so accessible, so please keep it up and don't let the criticism bother you too much! thank you for your valuable work!

Hello! I'm an English teacher and, also, I'm a smiling person. Do Mexicans tend to smile! However, I do love your style. Why does everyone want people to be different from whom they are? Your reasons are so valid and relevant. And those people who want you to smile might not be listening deeply. They may very well be influenced by gender prejudice: Women look prettier when they smile. So, you're so kind in explaining your reasons, but you are exceptional just the way you are. Diversity is part of our nature. We must embrace the way we are. Greetings from Mexico City.

You are an EXCELLENT TEACHER. You don’t need to smile, keep going as you are. Your style comes across as very professional. You remind me of a woman I know who grew up in Blackpool and now lives amongst the Tatler readers and “are you going beagling this weekend” fraternity. She presents a very neutral front like yourself with the very low energy quite closed mouth delivery, I’ve always said it is because she worries about her natural accent slipping out like Eliza Dooolittle at Ascot. It worked for her and seems very happy with life but inside there is a lovely person who does have a sense of humour and itnis always a joy to make her laugh. Oddly you look very like the younger her… perhaps a distant relo’. My wife is an actress so we both love the nuances of accents and so enjoy your channel.

Serious teaching can be a great asset. Fun is important as a pallet cleanser or to establish a rapport at the beginning of the year. Sometimes as a reward to a hard push. But without seriousness people pickup that a subject must be less important. Some people might be annoyed at a serious teacher, but they are mostly annoyed at themselves, or their circumstances. I.e. they'd rather do something else, or resent struggling compared to peers. If you can't handle a subject when done seriously, maybe it's a sign to pursue something else. Learning to enjoy things intrinsically is one of life's greatest lessons.

I don't really smile alot. Unless it's something that makes me laugh or extremely happy then I'll smile 😃. Other than that I don't smile.
