I came here because I was nervous after 5 years of not turning on car engine, pulling out the fule pump and unfreezing by using w-d 40, tapping casing with rubber mallet, shaking up and down to help loosen, and manually rotating van. Plus rewiring between cut pump wires and harness. What a relief. I just need to hear confirmation of what I understood. Thanks for the video. Great job

This is so good. Thanks for making this video. I was replacing the fuelpump in my Golf4 and when doing so I first thought i got the wrong pump as it would be totally submerged in fuel causing an explosion/fire. This video explains it all how it works and why it works. Again...thanks a million. You saved the day for me

Excellent video. I am in UK working on 1996 Ford Escort. Sits outside in the weather. I start it once every 12 months. Normally fine but this time no fuel pump noise at ignition on. I removed pump from tank ( sweat & tears ) & it works fine on bench but this was after I tried to remove the outer can. I put it back together but was worried about having possibly damaged a sealing gasket and allowing fuel inside & contact with sparking commutator. After watching this fine video I now realise that sealing the can is not that critical as petrol flows through all of the interior of the motor. Also I subsequently read a comment further down this thread about thermal shock with low tank fuel level on hot day . Seems like a probable explanation for the temporary failure. Thank you so much for this superb disassembly video and associated comments.

I recently had a fuel pump fail at about (7) years old. That's a new record for shortest lifespan in my personal experience. I have owned 58 cars over the last 30 yrs until death did us part *most were exceeding mechanical limits a.k.a. very high mileage/cheap). I really appreciated this information shared in this video because I was so going to cheat code this fuel pump install (cut tank high as possible, make a panel with holes for fuel line and wires), and drop her in next to the old pump not as to obstruct the float ha,ha) even if it was unsafe. I was not sure about the wiring that will need to be joined about 6inches from the pump. I will obviously do my diligence to not let gas touch them, but I would not have guessed that being submerged in gas would be better (safer). I would rather not die by being burned to death, but I prefer it to changing this fuel pump the proper way. I appreciate the peace of mind that this knowledge gives especially for my passengers. They aren't expendable , and it's on me to keep them safe, so thanks dude. May what you have given return to you, or at least bestow the honor due the man you see in the mirror.

Great video . One question typically for maintaining a prime on a pump a check valve is placed on the suction of the pump (foot valve) to make sure that the pump is always primed. Placing a check valve on the discharge in the case of this fuel pump mainly maintains pressure after the pump and the pump is always primed due to it being submerged in gasoline. Please correctly if I am wrong.

Of course but my sensor is using a gell that's only waterproof and not gasoline proof. The gel would dissolve and after a while it could be a short-circuit. But since water is heavier than gasoline I put the sensor in a lower compartment filled with water with the gasoline on top.

So....if TWA Flight 800 was caused by "the investigation concluded the crash’s cause was not a terrorist attack, but an electrical failure that ignited a nearly empty center wing fuel tank in the 25-year-old aircraft. The event remains one of the deadliest plane crashes in U.S. history." If the above is true, we would have cars exploding 24/7 all around the world, as the percentage of gasoline fueled vehicles world wide running around "nearly empty" is very, very high. Also, "Is aviation fuel flammable? At normal temperatures, aviation fuel gives off very little vapor. This means it doesn't ignite easily and or form dangerous fuel-air mixtures." Great video!!

Thanks for your video, it was helpful but I'm still missing something. I'm not as concerned about the fuel pump as I am the connections. One I just replaced looks much like yours and has a total of maybe 15-20 pins in maybe 5 connectors plus the gauge "rheostat." I think it's assumed there is spark, or may be spark, in the air space? I don't get how there will always be too much fuel vapor for ignition/explosion. There is nothing telling people if your car sits empty too long and evaporates down to whatever small amount it will blow up unless you add fresh gas. I don't see how the fuel vapor and air would mix uniformly immediately anyway especially if it was empty, ventilated for whatever reason, or new, then gas added. Another factor, in cold weather, perhaps very cold, it seems there would be some point where little or no fuel vapor could stay in the air after it has sat long enough for gases like methane to butane were driven off. There's a video of a drum exploding like a bomb and killing a guy with a cutting torch who thought it was empty but still had traces of flammable (acetone). I think they said more than a tsp. but not the upper limit where it could not explode. Regardless, it seems there could be all sort of reasons a gas tank could be within a range for ignition or explosion that many would not consider or be warned of.

I just sawed a hatch in floor of 2005 Astro Cargo Van with 39,000 original miles on it. Pump runs, but doesn't pump fuel, so I suspect it is mechanical failure inside pump. Van was running great, in drive way I was sitting inside it with AC on and suddenly it just quit running. I tried every thing, jumped relay to make it run continuously, and still no fuel delivery. So now I gotta figure out which wires in plug go to pump motor, and gonna try running it in bucket of water. That will be final proof that it mechanical failure within the pump itself. I am thinking the gear is sitting still, while the motor runs fine, the pump gear is cracked or slipping on shaft, ... I suspect.

Immediately flush the pump with WD-40 or some gas if it works. You don't want the bearings getting damaged if the pump isn't the problem.

Fuel filter? All in tank pumps have a sock filter on them and then there is the actual fuel filter in-line after the pump. Some may also have a filter in the return line.

@electronicsNmore

I wouldn't do it, there's no reason to screw up. The wires have colors. There's a flow check valve, so the pump would spin the wrong direction and build pressure very quickly because the check valve would block the flow.

Hi, first if all, thanks for this great video. I just have a doubt on what you tried to demonstrate on the section when pumping water. I'm not a native english speaker and could not understand very well your words during that test. Did the pump stopped pumping water because of a short circuit or you just turned it off? If it was short circuit, why didn't it happen immediately? Thumbs up!

So fuel does get inside the motor, cooling it very well .. That means as long as your engine is running okay, your fuel pump motor is cooled. Some say it's not okay to let fuel get to less than a quarter of the fuel tank total capacity, but I guess that's just a myth.

Surprising that this is allowed in our hysterical society. We are taught to err on the side of ignorance. Risk-assessment is thought to be beyond the abilities of the average person. These pumps actually rely on having fuel flow through them in order to keep cool, from what I understand. Be careful with how low you let your fuel level get, and when you fill up! A near empty tank getting filled up on a hot day can thermally shock the pump and cause it to seize. :)
@electronicsNmore
@electronicsNmore 7 жыл бұрын
Yes, the fuel keeps the armature cool as it flows through the motor.
@soupflood

Is that true? The engine should be off while the tank is getting filled, that should ease the thermal shock on the pump.
@rhkips

@@soupflood The pump will be hot from running, plus keep in mind in a return-type fuel system, fuel has been circulated through the rail where it picks up a significant amount of heat before being returned to the tank. :)

Still seems dangerous to me. Think of all the vehicles on the road, and even commercial aircraft, TWA flight 800 for example. Mixing electricity and fuel.....I don't know. Anything can happen and investigators have a built in explanation when it does.
@electronicsNmore
@electronicsNmore 7 жыл бұрын
Since you brought it up, and I really don't like to discuss things like this on this channel, TWA flight 800 was shot down by accident by our own military. I know that for a fact, plenty of evidence to support that. The government had to cover up the accident otherwise the public would fear flying. Over 100 highly educated, and highly credible people witnessed what happened that night. The federal government refused to listen to countless eyewitnesses, or insisted they didn't see what they saw. Which is what they usually do when trying to cover something up. The pilot that flew the plane to NYC also knows the truth, they tried to throw him in jail. I also know a person that worked at the scene. The investigators and military know the truth.

Agree with every comment. Just believe in "over-engineering" as a safety and performance principle. Maybe old fashioned but today everything is a cost-cutting business model. With the quality of components dropping in recent years, airbags to ignition switches, seems like the last system you would want to put in jepordy regarding saftey would be the fuel system. Recently had my 2 year old pickup in for repair as the fuel sending unit "malfunctioned" and the fuel gauge did not work. There are several videos on utube showing worn contacts on the potentiometer. One wonders how the metal on these contacts could wear out after only 33k miles.
@electronicsNmore
@electronicsNmore 7 жыл бұрын
You can never have too many safety features. :-) On my scooter I had to remove the sending unit to repair worn out traces where the float wiper moved along. I soldered all the traces back using lead free solder. I had no problems for 2 years, then sold the scooter.

Actually there are insufficient explanations given. While it is true in most situations the pump, especially the electric motor's commutator contacts are submerged or encased by gasoline, there are corner cases when they are not, and the design must be able to handle safely. Let's say a vehicle tank is ran so low and allow to sit so even most of the gasoline in the tank has evaporated and the tank now come to air fuel mixture ratio near 14:1. Then someone proceed to try starting the car, and the pump starting to suck in this vapor. What then? While this is very rare corner case it needs an explanation as well.
