Many people believes that changing the past can definitely change the future, as stories like "back to the future" made that type of belief popular. Most people generally assumes your "former past" has been rewritten, if you've change the past. From a person's perspective on seeing you time travel to the past, they literally seen you left that reality, your original timeline, and never returned.

If you go back in time and kill baby Thanos, he never gets the Stones and never wipes out half of all life. If Thanos never wipes out half of all life, you have no reason to go back in time and kill him. If you don't go back in time and kill baby Thanos, he grows up, gets the Stones and wipes out half of all life. In a strictly linear time model, changing the past creates a paradox.

Not necessarily. It would create a parallel timeline/universe. One with your original timeline and another one running in parallel to it. The new parallel timeline would be the one affected, not your timeline. Meaning another you (the past you) from a parallel timeline would be affected by your tampering of time. The current you however would not benefit at all since you can’t undo your own timelines mistakes, you can only affect someone else’s (ex: your past self, not your current self). A caution for time travelers is to never travel to a time in which you don’t exist in, otherwise you would have never been born in that new parallel timeline that you created due to the butterfly effect where even the slightest change in time has an endless ripple effect, affecting everything. Your presence in that time alone would change everything.

truthfully the only real time travel that has the ability to change that timelines future is the days of futures past Xmen concept where you transfer your consciousness from the future to the past and make different decisions because your future you has already been there and done that, meaning because the future isn't already there your present can change the timeline because the events of that future hadn't been written or happened yet so that is why when Logan wakes up in the future he sees a different future to the one he originally whitnessed, this is the only time travel where back to the future or terminators concept of changing the future works, which is why terminator would have been better with this concept, the second you physically travel back to the past you branch off a new timeline aka multiverse theory and its not just one timeline you create, theorhetically since existence is infinite in multiverse theory, you could easly create and infinite number of probably realities by physically time traveling.

IIRC, Bill & Ted actually plays with one of the more entertaining versions: The timeline is static and fixed. Everything you do while travelling in time already occurred. There are philosophical issues with this, but it's fun to play with in fiction, because you can set up the weird things happening in the first part of the story and then circle around to the time travelling heroes causing them later as they loop back on themselves.

@@Valaso-Osalav Wouldn't it make just as much sense for the future to instead be erased and replaced with the new timeline, and only those who went back in time remain from that deleted timeline? In this case, you, the time traveler, *should* have a doppelganger with increasingly different memories, in a new reality, and with no old one to return to. You become an imposter the moment you time-travel. I think it works fine for timelines to be overwritten, rather than split in two. Even then, time is not technically overwritten and is still always moving forward, but nobody will remember the past that the traveler perceives as the future, except the traveler (and with you being the only proof of the "old future"). Dimensional theory/travel is a whole different beast, it really doesn't need to be tagged on with every time travel concept. It's perfectly plausible (to me) for >time< itself to end in old timelines when the (selfish!) time traveler leaves and changes it. Ceasing to exist, as it's time has run out, yet not *never* existing (only the traveler being exempt from the end of time, safe in the new period/timeline). It shouldn't be possible to return to *your* time after the past has been changed. These shouldn't even qualify as theories, time travel and dimensional travel are impossible according to everything that can be observed and understood by humans. What we are all using is not logic of this world, only circumstantial connections based on things that can't be proven. Baseless musings that parody things we *do* understand and make our brain go "hmmmm". When you enter this realm of nonsense, it's not really about what makes the most sense scientifically, but what triggers the most connections and interest within the majority of us, stupid humans. This rant embodies what makes the most sense to me on a nonsensical topic :) TL;DR the biggest gripe I have with time travel movies is the fact they don't end up with doppelgangers, everything else can be explained easily (excluding time travel itself, which is impossible, but that's what we're there for). You are no longer the 'prime You' the moment you time travel, you are a foreigner from a timeline that no longer exists.

By the time i watched Loki, it totally made sense. Throughout Endgame, i was still convinced of the Back to the Future logic, even when Nebula shot her past self. But when you look at the Sacred Timeline, traveling back in time creates a new branched timeline. And reading Avengers Forever completely cemented that for me.
@BYERE
@BYERE 6 ай бұрын
Close. Kang’s Sacred Timeline ALWAYS had them going back in time as per the events of Endgame, as well as the events of Loki (him stealing the Tesseract, going to the TVA, etc). That was all MEANT to happen as part of the timeline. Even the death of He Who Remains and destruction of the TVA and Time Loom was planned, in the event that Loki/Sylvie didn’t take over. The only thing He Who Remains DIDN’T plan for was Loki using the time-slipping power to destroy the Loom without resetting all of time and space in the process… even though technically it was still Loki taking over the position, the manner in which he allowed timelines to work is vastly different to how He Who Remains controlled the timeline/s.
@niks660097
@niks660097 5 ай бұрын
@@BYERE But Kang has to maintain that timeline by culling branches via TVA nothing was meant to happen without TVA culling undesired possiblities, there were still branched timelines, its just Kang is too smart to let them have any consequence.
@BYERE
@BYERE 5 ай бұрын
@@niks660097 Remember, it wasn't JUST the timeline he was manipulating, it was the people in the TVA too. He instructed them to prune the branch that Loki made when he stole the Tesseract, but also got them to use Loki to find Sylvie, even though he'd set her lifetime of events in motion too. He was having Miss Minutes do the legwork and sway Mobius and co into doing what He wanted. Literally, there was NOTHING left to chance in his plan... but given that he could only see up to the point of his own death (a staple within the MCU universe, even when using the power of the Infinity Stones or similar powers), he couldn't account for Loki using the time-slipping powers to such a degree as to take control of the situation. Loki basically outwitted him.
@Carribla
@Carribla 5 ай бұрын
Except not really. They completely broke this rule by having cap go back and time and grow old in their current time line. Which means going back in time will affect YOUR future. A good example of what they were trying to do is surprisingly dragon ball. A character goes back in time to help the current timeline, but understands that no matter what he does, his own time line is unchanged by this. They even show him going back and everything is the same for him. Mcu wanted best of both worlds, so they shouldn't have explained it like this
@BYERE
@BYERE 5 ай бұрын
@@Carribla They didn't break any rules. The rule for a branched timeline is that you change something, and that puts you into the branched timeline. You're still on the Sacred Timeline up until that point. By taking the stones from the past, they created 4 different branched timelines where the stones were taken... but by going back and putting the stones they took back in their places just after they were taken, you're clipping those branches in the same way the TVA does (albeit via a less reality-destroying method than those grenade things the TVA troops use) Again, that means that Steve was still on the Sacred Timeline, and as long as he didn't interact with himself, change the outcome of any events, and kept an extremely low profile, then he could simply grow old while living a very quiet life until just after the events of Endgame, where he would slip over to the lakeside bench. Before anyone else brings it up, you might say "But spending his life with Peggy would change events!"... Why do you think they never revealed who her mystery husband was, and the family she had between the time of Steve crashing the plane into the ocean and her deathbed scene in Winter Soldier? He would've told her early on that she could never reveal who he really was, and she took that knowledge to the grave. Future Steve marries Peggy, and they live a long life together. He knows when not to be by her side on her deathbed, so as not to interact with his past self, but was likely there when she died and before past Steve was called about it.

Variants exist on different timelines... so it doesn't debunk this at all. Multiverse theory is why killing baby thanos wouldn't help the timeline they belong to; what they would do is just create a branching timeline separate from their original. The TVA is also outside the flow of time, which is why originally Time Slipping there wouldn't be possible.

@@deethomas886 not exactly, That's Alternate Timelines not Multiverses. Although same idea but they're not at the same time, Alternate Timelines are just worlds with a similar characteristics but not with their histories just like what Loki did when he got the Tesseract from the Time Heist back in Avengers Endgame and eventually escaping his actual fate based on the original, creating an Alternate Timeline while on the otherhand, Multiverses are much more different as a whole, in general. Raimi-verse Spider-Man (Peter 2) and Webb-verse Spider-Man (Peter 3) doesn't have Avengers at all, Peter 3 didn't encountered Venom unlike Peter 2 who killed Eddie Brock and Venom. Actually, Back to the Future is probably the most accurate time travel movie. Doc explains it perfectly in the 2nd movie about when you go back in time and change the past, it branches into a new alternate time line. So if you were to travel back to the future, you would travel into the future of that alternate reality, not affecting your original timeline. So, if they did Rhodie’s plan of going back to kill baby Thanos, they would have just created an alternate timeline where Thanos never existed. Sure, THAT new timeline would be saved but their original timeline is still affected.

Tp be fair, any paradox that can occur wouldn't necessarily create a loop as much as a spiral. You change the past and that change prevents itself in a way that creates a repeat of the first iteration, which would have factors that are altered by virtue of being a repeat, to be point where the factors accumulate and create an alternate version of the first iteration's events which doesn't cause a paradox. In the grandfather paradox, this would be seen as the grandson being unable to kill his grandfather through "random" occurences which would have piled up over the multiple cycles of the grandson killing the grandfather, eliminating his existence and preventing his grandfathers death. That, or the events changed enough for someone else to become the son's grandfather, or it reaches a timeline where the grandfather does die, but the death is caused by natural events not affected once the existence of the grandson is erased.

Regarding how Steve Rogers/Captain America returned the six Infinity Stones at the conclusion of the _Endgame_ film, there’s an online FanFiction story entitled “The Infinity Stones Return: Captain America’s Final Adventure.” This story is written in the form of a heavily detailed plot-summary for an eight-episode mini-series. The first episode takes place before Captain America (hereafter called “Cap” for short) begins his journey, and shows Professor Hulk rebuilding the time machine and Scott Lang/Antman volunteering for the initial test run. This involves a return-trip to Clint Barton’s pre-snap home to put back the baseball glove that was taken during the original test-run. Afterward, Doctor Strange explains why the stones have been placed in the briefcase and reveals that the Tesseract, Orb, and Sceptre have been shrunken down to fit in Cap’s pockets and will be re-enlarged after he arrives in the past to re-contain their respective stones at the proper time. In the second episode, Cap visits the Ancient One in 2012 prior to the arrival of his earlier self in New York. There, she uses the combined power of the six stones in the briefcase to cast future-dated spells that will make the 2012-2014 timelines reset themselves once the heisted stones have been returned to their proper places. Afterwards, she transports to the roof of the New York sanctum where she gives Hulk the original version of the Time Stone after first putting on a performance-act of initial resistance and surprise to ensure he understands the importance of returning the stones afterward. She then reclaims the returned-version from Cap’s briefcase. In the third episode, the Ancient One continues to assist Cap by helping him recapture Loki and returning him into SHIELD custody along with the stolen 2012-Tesseract (after future-Tony and Scott have fled the scene of course). Afterwards, the re-enlarged Sceptre re-containing the Mind Stone is given back to the Hydra goons, thus triggering the first timeline-reboot spell which erases everyone’s memory of the wayward events. However, the final scene then reveals that since Loki misused the Space Stone’s power in the wayward timeline, a branch-timeline was nevertheless still created, thus requiring the TVA to intervene. In the fourth episode, Cap shoots forward to 2013 where he re-teams with the Ancient One for the journey to Asgard. There, they work together to neutralize Heimdall before putting the Reality Stone/Aether back into Jane Foster’s body and returning the enchanted hammer to a comically confused Thor. Afterward, the timeline is then likewise reset to erase everyone’s memories. The fifth episode has Cap shooting forward again to 2014 where he and the Ancient One return the re-enlarged Orb containing the Power Stone back to the temple on Morag after first making a brief but necessary side-trip to delay Korath’s arrival and prevent his interference. The sixth episode then has Cap being sent to Vormir where, in order to return the Soul Stone, he must first contend with a temporarily freed Red Skull and a temporarily resurrected Natasha Romanoff. The start of the seventh episode then reveals that, with the two stones from 2014 returned, the timeline has also now been reset so that everyone’s memories have been erased and that exact duplicate/replacement versions of Thanos, Gamora, and Nebula have been created to take the place of their original counterparts who jumped forward to 2023. Before travelling back to 1970 and then further back to 1946 though, Cap first reveals to the Ancient One that Doctor Strange had previously placed a charmed spell over Cap’s aura so that no one in the past would be able to recognize who he really is unless he wants them to. Hence, Peggy would be able to see Cap in his true form when he returns to her whereas everyone else would see him as somebody different. This would then enable him to easily change his name and assume the identity of a former G.I. whose unit was rescued by Captain America during the war as per the reference in the _Winter Soldier_ film. This also then explains why the younger Cap didn't recognize his older self at Peggy's funeral during the _Civil War_ movie. In the last part of this seventh episode, Cap returns to 1970 and puts the re-enlarged Tesseract containing the Space Stone back in the vault, then proceeds up to Hank Pym’s lab to put back the four replenished vials of Pym Particles. Upon arriving in the lab however, he is unexpectedly intercepted by the TVA. The final episode then has Cap being recruited by the TVA to fight the Red Guardian in 1984 before being allowed to return to 1946 and live happily ever after. Hope you enjoy reading the story in full on the FanFiction website. Cheers!

I'm sure the scriptwriters just worded it like that to make this scene funny, but personally I think the best way to put it is: Think of time as a tree branch. A new shoot growing out of an existing branch is not going to replace the whole thing, it will become an entirely new branch.

We can all agree the way bruce explains time travel is so confusing, so here a better explanation, everyone knows the whole change the past you change the future thing well thats not how it works, if you were to time travel to the past, present or future and change something no matter what you do your timeline everything that happened in your life it all stays the same. The only consequences is that you create different versions of yourselves that get different lifes than you, therefore you create different timelines and universes
the endgame time travel scenes but only the chaotic parts
