Having control over your edges is vital to clean, beautiful inline skating. Here are a few easy exercises that I use to help me clean up and practice my edges. You can do these with Snow White, Pic, Golden Horse, Off Ice, or any other brand inline figure skates!
Let me know your favourite edge exercises in the comments!

I heard some people had deep edge regression on skates when switching to inlines. I moved somewhere with no rink for hours and will definitely be trying these tips! I feel I’m already regressing a lot with no ice after a year, so I’d love to hear others experiences. I’ve also heard a lot of positive things, like it improving technique in other respects.

Nice video. On 3 turn, I always struggle that my forward outside 3 turn, I go IN into 'flat' instead of on the edge. Similar to the drawing you made in the video. And when I come OUT of the 3 turn my edge is OK. I always try to lean on a virtual table :-) that is on the inside of my circle. that helps me control the edge more. thanks for sharing again !

That's a really cool way of visualizing your weight distribution on 3 turns, I'll have to try that next time I go skating!

If I got inline figure skates, could I learn how to artistically skate on inlines using figure skating tutorials? I am thinking about getting inline figure skates instead of rollerskates... but there are no tutorials!
@Hazook
@Hazook 3 жыл бұрын
Yes you could! In fact, I used figure skate tutorials to learn all my jumps on inlines before moving them onto the ice. You’ll have to make slight modifications here and there (for example, three turns), but the basic ideas are typically transferable either way!

Thanks so much for the video!!! I've been stuck trying to get outside edges for ages now and was starting to wonder with there's something wrong with me. Somehow I can do them fine on ice, but it's impossible on inlines. I'm gonna loose my mind here, I don't know what's going onnnnnb

I'd have liked to have seen focus on posture, hips should be tucked under shoulders and free foot brought into the skating foot, at this point there is a bend, transfer of weight and a press with the foot you were skating on to provide the power. In this demo, the upper body bobs forward on the transfer of weight, which is inefficient and not so good technique. That happens because the feet aren't brought together under the hips properly and the body doesn't move vertically downward with knee bend over the skate. placing the foot you want to transfer weight to, wide or in front of the skating foot forces the upper body to move out of alignment, resulting in poor edge control. Also, inline skates don't have a "continuous edge" the have a convex profile the outer and inner edges of which are used to grip the surface, in other words the have edges like ice skates the mechanism of gripping is different is all. With strong edge practice, wheels reflect that in their shape, do my wheels start out with a bullet shaped profile and quickly assume a V shaped profile. It's true there isn't as much grip as on ice but you can get pretty deep edges nonetheless. :)

Because I’m not classically trained, I don’t want to give advice or direction on posture in case I either make a mistake or misrepresent the desired posture. I put these videos up to share my personal experiences and possibly help other self taught inline skaters. Thank you, I’ll try to work on those the next time I’m in inlines! By continuous edge, I meant that there’s no clear distinct ‘end’ of one edge, a hollow, then the other edge, and that makes it harder to grip the ground in the way ice blades do ice.

@@Hazook Thanks, I think you shpuld give yourself more credit, holding the head and body centred over the skate (weight over the skate) is good advice for everyone trained or not trained and what I realise I should have also said is that you do it pretty well. For what it's worth, I step wide or forward sometimes, so like all things, skating is a journey and there's always more that can be polished! The main thing is to have fun and skate safely!! :)

One foot skating on inline skates is a nightmare lol. I find it's much easier with a super grippy surface and hard wheels. A good wood surface works well; polished concrete is a nightmare :P The soft wheels scrub off too much speed and require too much effort.
@Hazook
@Hazook 3 жыл бұрын
Haha it really is a struggle! But I noticed it made my one foot skating on ice a lot better so maybe it has some silver linings? The grippy surfaces are always fantastic for edges but awful for spins, I’ve found!😂
@RyanHellyer
@RyanHellyer 3 жыл бұрын
@@Hazook I'm not a figure skater, but a former hockey player, so I haven't had experience with spins before. But I can imagine they're almost impossible on something like polyurethaned wood. Even stopping is hard on a grippy surface. I blew a wheel out stopping on polyurethaned wood once lol. I just heard a bang and wiped out, and when I went to look at my foot I could see the wheel had blown totally off the rim!
@Hazook
@Hazook 3 жыл бұрын
That’s crazy, I’ve never had that happen to me before (but for my sake I hope it doesn’t lol). With hockey, I’d imagine being able to change directions while skating is super important, and I’m guessing the grippy surface really helped with that? With figure, we tend to have less sharp or hard turns so graceful gliding takes a higher priority, making smooth surfaces the best for us. It’s really cool how our two sports share so many similarities but also differences!
@RyanHellyer
@RyanHellyer 3 жыл бұрын
@@Hazook Inline hockey is played on all sorts of surfaces. The most popular is actually a sport court, which is made of plastic. Next most popular is probably painted concrete. Polyurethane is nice in some ways (more grip), but quite hazardous as when you land on it you tend to stick and them tumble, rather than slide. Wood surfaces are also more expensive too, so they tend not to be very popular for inline hockey. Blowing a wheel is not that bad. I've never heard of anyone getting injured from it. You just fall over, get up and go replace the wheel (or borrow one if you don't have a spare).

I did do some (ice) figure skating lessons once. I broke my leg, and the lady who ran the beginner figure skating class told me I could join in as some exercise until I could skate properly again. The only thing I could do well was one footed skating (on my good leg) :)

Hallo. First of all thank you very much for your video. It's quite impressive! I would like to buy some skates for inline figure skating but for me as a beginner they are all very expensive. Have you or anyone else a tip for me where to buy some?
@Hazook
@Hazook 3 жыл бұрын
I wish I could help more but you’ll probably have to do some research. Look for dealers of the major brands in your country to avoid import fees and crazy shipping charges, and certain brands are cheaper to get depending on where you are.

You can maybe try practicing along a wall and shift your weight back and forth along the inside and outside edge to get used to using edges? Make sure you're bending your knees and looking forward, as cheesy as that is, it really helps with having control over your edges.
