I haven't finished the video but when mentioning the crew's metamorphosis into an actual crew, you could've pointed out the fact that now all of them got bounties, whereas before only zoro did, and as you mention, he was the one that already saw luffy as his captain. I loved the video BTW I just thought it was an applicable "parallel" I guess

I kind of interpreted Luffy asking Usopp to shoot down that flag different to what you described. Robin's main fear was that eventually even the straw hats would consider her to be a burden and might feel they'd be better off without her. Her enemy is not any small organization. It is the world government. With Luffy shooting down the flag and declaring war against them, he is basically reassuring her that her enemy is the entire crew's enemy. The world government will come after the crew now regardless of whether Robin is with them or not. So she might as well join them without any fear of them abandoning her.

It's just a part of a whole. This interpretations goes well with Morj's one. Oda was just taking so many leves as he said, and the one you realized was a more obvious one that many of us also noticed. So both of them could be correct at the same time! The Strawhats were telling thousand of things with just that simple yet big action, but the mesasge was never spilled to us as Oda seems to enjoy getting readers to interpret and depict more hidden depths of his narrative ^^ So they could be implying both things. Which is insane that he actually manages to do it.

The water seven saga (aokijis first appearance to leaving on the thousand sunny) is roughly 100 episodes. The end of thriller bark to the end of marineford (right before nothing happened/saobady and ending at 3d2y) is roughly 100 episodes as well, and i really don't know which is the better stretch of one piece. I mean you could easily argue either one, but one thing is for sure, they are 2 of the best shonen stretches of all time, and i don't know if that's ever gonna change. It's very hard to have 100 straight episodes that are that good in terms of storytelling/world building/action/characterization the whole 9 yards. And one piece did it twice lol

@@miggyboy4905 They didn't care in the moment as they barely know anything about the Government. There WILL be some day they care, as the Government and the Tenryuubitos ARE making the world a place with no freedom and Luffy has many friends to protect. So it's obvious that they didn't care at that point but they're little by little collecting little peicec of info about the injustices that they do until Luffy realizes that they ARE the proble, they are the World's Crocodile, so the final boss they have to defeat willl be that organization (Kurohige will be after, during or before this war, yes, but the point it that the organizations is the anthitesis of Luffy's freedom, and so Luffy will have to care some time as he cared about Crocodile not hurting his friend -more than that he was destroying Alabasta). In fact, in Wano we've seen him angry for the *rights* of the people he didn't even know of (though he had Tama as a more personal example) not being respected. I would say Robin and Brook have the saddest story. Everyone on the crew have a place to call home with people who cared about them for most of their lives, and people waiting for them at the end of their adventure. Brook has Laboon waiting, but he did spend half a century in isolation and that is mental torture worse than death. but Brook technically still has a home town and while a lot of people he knew were probably dead from old age, it's not like everyone he ever loved at home was brutally murdered. on the other hand Robin has nothing to return to and was more or less surviving alone for 20 years before meeting the Strawhats. her entire hometown and everyone she has ever knew up to that point was murdered by the WG and labelled as heretics even in death. so her story is easily the saddest.

Have you ever thought that up until this arc, Luffy's most audacious act was challenging a warlord? Here, he straight up raided one of the World Government's most important facility, mowed through thousands of soldiers, defeated Blueno before the others EVEN got to the island, publicly declared war on the entire world, defeated Lucci who was thought to be unbeatable, AND escaped a whole Buster Call with minimal casualty. This arc seriously raised the stakes for the entire series onward with some arcs having situations that feels almost as insane as Enies Lobby.

That's one of my favorite parts. When Usopp catches the impact of Luffys attack and sends it back in his face with the dial is amazing. The one thing that bums me out tho is that sometimes Oda seems to forget that Usopp. Usopp takes a round victory in a fight against Luffy, that is fucking huge! He proves right then and there that he belongs on the crew, he can stand toe to toe with the captain. But after the arc concludes we go back to him being afraid of everything and never see him fight like that again. I still love Usopp as a character, Oda still nails most everything. But that just seemed like such a great opportunity for Usopp to really step up, and to show off that creative level of fighting more often. It seems like Usopp has to go through his character arc multiple times and every time he goes thru it he just resets. In Wano he seems to finally be portrayed as an actual "brave Warrior of the sea", but still doesn't quite feel like what he should be. He's still Usopp the coward when it's time for a funny.

It’s also important to note that Luffy hadn’t demonstrated any sign of conqueror’s haki up to this moment. Only after finishing out his crew with Brook as a musician (a position Luffy had wanted for a long time) did he step up as leader of a full crew. (Before anyone says “what about jinbe,” Luffy and Jinbe hadn’t met yet and Nami had been a perfectly fine helmsman).

Another symbolism of Luffy's growth as a serious captain can be seen in the use of aquatic Bulls. Right after their arrival at Water 7, he and Ussop ride Yagara Bulls, the smallest and most silly-looking form, just because they feel like it would be fun. Several chapters later, in order to catch up to Robin and save her, Luffy uses the gigantic and powerful King Bulls.

What also makes this arc so good is that the transition between Water 7 and Enies' Lobby is perhaps the most clean arc transition in the series. The Sea Train section removes the short breaks in time that usually separate arcs. And unlike the transition from Jaya to Skypiea, we already know exactly who we're fighting on Enies' Lobby. While some people treat Water 7 and Enies' Lobby as two arcs out of the "Water 7 Saga", it really feels like one continuous arc from the moment we reach Water 7 to the moment the saga concludes.

The entire point of Water 7 and Enies Lobby goes back to the first chapter of the series, when Benn Beckman tells Luffy that the safety of the crew lies on the captain's shoulders, and that being a pirate isn't all fun and games. It's not the Luffy didn't listen to Beckman, it's just that Luffy never needed to learn what that truly meant until he had to protect his crew from massive threats like Aokiji and Lucci.

When Spandan said to Luffy do you realize who you are up against? And Luffy said without wavering that he knows exactly who they are fighting against and ordered Usopp to burn down the flag. I would like to imagine Luffy probably have some opinion about the world government from his childhood experience witnessing Sabo’s supposed death at the government’s hand as well as when fighting Crocodile, a corrupted warlord backed by the government. It may seem like Luffy is simple-minded and didn’t care who the enemy was, but I think he actually knows full well what the main obstacle to freedom is and sooner or later they will have to go up against the world government at some point so might as well declare war on them when his friend’s life is on the line.

Morj, you have done it again. Over the years, you have inspired me to think much more deeply about One Piece, and many more of the manga I read. You're always pointing things out that I never would have thought of, but I'd like to think I've gotten better and better at this kind of analysis, and that there's a lot of great depth to One Piece I've been able to realize on my own. But man, I never would have even thought of Water 7 as an island, built up to withstand trials, as parallel to the crew. I never even considered the fact that their dynamic changed from being friends to being a real pirate crew, everything their relationships didn't have before Water 7. I was familiar with some metaphors, like Aqua Laguna's chaos reflecting the chaos in the crew, but Merry's keel? Holy shit. I love Usopp's character arc during Enies Lobby, but I didn't think of how it tied into not just his own strength and importance to the crew, but that strength relative to what the crew had to become. And the climax highlighting that their friendships still had value is just genius. I know we've talked about how villains contrast Luffy before, but I never quite saw it for Luffy and Lucci - and of course, it's because it's really about Luffy's contrast to Spandam as leaders. I had wondered about how the "the crew needs to become strong enough" was somewhat repetitive between EL and Sabaody, but it makes so much sense that they were only able to train for two years, while having faith in Luffy, because of what they had been through in EL. The Dawn of the World was always my favorite of your analyses, but I hadn't even considered the point that Enies Lobby is where that Dawn actually begins. The most I would have wanted to add was how well Water 7 is plotted, how it's a confusing intrigue plot that's all story, not fights, as the focus on plot over fights is one of my favorite things about One Piece. How it's so much more than the "who is fighting who" plot structure most shonen use. But you even covered that extremely well. And I would have talked about how well constructed of a "power-of-friendship" moment the climax with Usopp and Luffy is, but yep, you covered that too, and made the point I hadn't considered about how Usopp is taunting him. I like to talk about great action paneling, but now I want to reread these arcs (and the whole story) and pay attention to all the great imagery and visual storytelling you're talking about, because I definitely could be looking closer. Thank you for everything you've said in this video. Seriously, so many things that I never would have realized on my own, that feel so obvious now and add so much to the depth. Fantastic.

The fact, that Oda did all this intentional in building his World and Story in Onepiece, with every single Character within the Crew, on the friendly side or even on the enemy side is really frightening. No one is talking for hours about how good is Naruto or Bleach, but there are several hours, probably multiple days/weeks worth of content talking about every single detail in Onepiece, because everything has a meaning. If you like Onepiece or not, you have to appreciate that Onepiece is a Masterpiece.

Technically there are also really long and detailed analysis for Bleach but they are very different as they don't really talk about a detailed and carefully crafted narrative like for OP as this is not what the series is, instead it's a deep dive on all of the underlying themes and philosophy behind (generally centered around characters or sometimes fights rather than story arcs as a whole) because at it's core, it's a much more contemplative character centric series, doesn't mean that OP doesn't have deep themes (this video proves otherwise) or that Bleach doesn't have a well crafted story (Soul Society arc is really well crafted) but that the approach of both series is very different and commendable in it's own right. Just wanted to share this comment, because both of these are some of my favorite series out there, but if one jumps from one to the other whilst expecting the same thing, it's when they would get disappointed

CP9 is cool looking but they’re all just doing their job and hardly have any deep motivations or relatability. Marineford has that specific event that changed One Piece forever, but I’m not huge on war sequences, so it got a little boring for me at some points. The first manga volume that I read when I was a kid is the enies lobby arc..basically the first introduction to this medium and when I want to get into one piece when I grow up, I suddenly remember back then I read this stuff..the most thing I remember is diable jambe and usopp sniping spandex from up top..water 7 saga has always been my top 1..

Morj you goddamn mind reader, I was literally watching your analysis videos yesterday looking for some Ennies Lobby content, holy shit. Edit: just finished this video, my mind is absolutely blown. The way Oda is able to carefully craft everything in such a way is insane. Even Skypeia being the arc that broke the keel of the ship..

Oda had to make sure robin got focus and sympathy so we get distracted by the fact she is so broken for the story.. cause otherwise it's very lucky luffy found her cause her ability is so rare in the world the chances of luffy finding someone else willing to join his crew that can help him be pirate king and read the glyphs is literally a billion to 1....without her the story can't end...that's why it was crucial her saga was so long and big in scope

This story is MASTERFUL in every legitimate sense of the word. I never gave this show a chance as a kid because of the goofy artwork but in the last couple years I've begun catching up on the episodes with my wife before bed and we just left whole cake island! On to the mystical land of wano I hear so much about! This has easily become my favorite piece of media I've ever experienced. Nothing else you read or watch can so effortlessly make you FEEL something because IT wants you to! These videos have really given me an extra sense of appreciation for the story being told here and if I was a pirate captain I'd ask you to be part of my crew, morj. Your observation technique would be perfect for a sniper or archeologist.

What an amazing video Mr Morj! So many connections pointed out that I had never consciously thought of, really helping me understand why I and everyone else find this arc so special. I hope after your similar video you hinted at making for marineford, you make one on whole cake. I know you already did a major video on it but I feel like it is one of the best arcs (and my favorite) in the series in carrying out its themes just like ennies lobby and it is still underrated.

Great analysis Morj! I think one of the reasons the New World Arcs lack this type of emotional impact is because all of the strawhats have basically had their emotional character growth moments. All of the strawhats for the most part get their own arc or miniarc when we meet them and they join the crew. Pretty much from the get go we get their backstories, their tragedies, and their dreams; but then as they sail forward through the grandline their individual weaknesses as characters are explored and touched on and we see some type of character growth. But all of their possible weaknesses as a crew are tested and tried through enies lobby and then through Sabaody and their subsequent resolve to get back together. So after these events it's hard to create a story post timeskip that would feel just as serious and just as threatening as Usopp & Robin leaving the crew, as the entire strawhat crew being utterly defeated, or even Luffy completely failing and losing through Sabaody, Impel Down, and Marineford. Yes, we can have an ark where Sanji supposedly leaves the crew but it will never be as impactful because: 1) This has already happened in the story so it has a slight repetitive feel to it. 2) After everything the crew has gone through its hard to imagine that Sanji would ever actually abandon the crew. You would basically have to break his character at this point for him to betray the crew in any meaningful way. But doing that to one of your characters without any foreshadowing is not good storytelling and again it will feel repetitive because we already had crew members leaving. Whether it is to "protect" the crew or because they are too weak to stay with the crew; Robin and Usopp captured both of those aspects. So Sanji leaving will not have that impact. The other problem that the post timeskip story faces is that since there has already been so much character growth for each of the strawhats individually and collectively as a whole; it is difficult to create more character growth moments without again either being "repetitive" or making the reader feel like this character has somehow regressed. I think this also may be one of the reasons many people have been frustrated with Sanji's character. So when your main characters don't really have much character growth that they can realistically go through it leaves the writer with only a few choices moving the story forward. A) He can touch on weaknesses that were never really touched upon before. But the problem here is that it'll often times feel manufactured since most readers wouldn't have noticed these weaknesses in the character for the majority of the story. B) He can focus on new characters in the story; which is what I think Oda has basically chosen to do. In this case the main characters will no longer be the focus when it comes to growth but rather we will see them being successful due to the growth that they have already had. Unfortunately, for many readers this can also be frustrating because the main characters get less focus in this scenario and so they are stuck reading a story that is focusing on characters that they aren't really attached too and don't care about as much. So they're left hungry for their favorite character(s) to get some sort of screen time. And if the only time their character gets screen time is when they are being used as a gag or when they are somehow failing; then of course fans will get super frustrated. Especially if it feels like this character should have already grown past some of these failures. I am interested to see where Oda takes the story moving forward but at least right now I don't see how he can capture those emotional moments again through tragedy. Other than new characters going through tragedies I think the character arc for the strawhats now is actually succeeding in their dreams and what that does for their characters. IDK maybe I'm blind to some other weaknesses or ways that they can fail and tragedy could strike but this is how I see the story naturally progressing. And in this case it can hit emotional chords not because the main characters fail but because the main characters are starting to succeed on a much larger scale. All that hard work is actually starting to pay off and their dreams are starting to come true. The tragedies in this case will have to come from other side characters. Unless of course a strawhat dies or we get a strawhat betraying the crew like Blackbeard or something like that but it's really hard to see how that would happen organically. Although I do have a slight suspicion that Usopp and/or Luffy will die by the end.

Amazing that it took almost 8 years for the Strawhats to change from a bunch of goofballs into a hardened unit. Not many writers can keep a story going on that slow of a burn and keep their audience. Let alone keep it going another 15 years after that 8. 'Course, this is also the same guy that put 8 out of 9 strawhats out of the story from Sept 2008 until October 2010, and that was the time OP surged and established itself on a clear 'next level' above Naruto and Bleach in the rankings.
