In this lesson I'm going to talk about why I think every bass player should work on an understanding and knowledge of chord tones and chord construction.
Every piece we play contains a harmonic background of some kind. This is the 'chord progression'. When we create a bass line for a tune it's our functional role as a bass player to outline that harmony and to do this we need to play around a framework of chord tones. The notes of the chords.
If you've ever found yourself stuck playing simple root notes as a bass line and want to introduce some extra notes for interest. Chord tones are your friend.
For more information check out the Chord Tone Essentials course over at Talkingbass.net. Release Date: Sept 8th 2017

Thank´s Mark for your great lessons. Here it is not just talk, talk, talk, like on other channels, what makes it really enjoyable. I played the guitar as an autodidact but it turned out that I have more talent for bass. That´s why I now start to learn the instrument. I am from austria so there is another good thing coming with my studying: I have to think everything in a foreign language. That helps me getting better in english as well. I just subscribed to TalkingBass.net. Let´s get it on. So, thanks again! You are a great instructor/ teacher. Wolfgang Markus

I learned about chords from piano - and my teacher taught me tonic, sub-dominant and dominant 7th as well as others, too. I've been playing with arpeggios and working on a walking bass - and this is going to enrich what I'm doing. Good video.

Good info. Bought a couple of your courses a while back including chord tones. I have just started back on bass. Getting some basic stuff down and learning the board and I will dive right into chord tones. Its the key to it all.

Could you do a lesson on chordslapping, in the style of Kai Eckhart (and I think Armin Metz uses it too)? It's not very popular but I would really enjoy it if you could do a video about it.

Great video! Any chance of a request for the Cliff Burton style of "single-finger" flutter style of play? Hard to find much information about it!
@dragonbalance7700
@dragonbalance7700 7 жыл бұрын
Niera cause cliff doesn't use singular finger style. He only uses two. And no not three or four. His ligament was damaged in a fishing accident so he can't use his pinky or ring finger for bass. This took place at like 13 way before he played for Metallica or trauma. Although in sure you can still find different videos for the technique you're looking for from other bassists, just not in relation to cliff. (R.i.p cliff)

Unfortunately, the intro pretty much sums up the orientation of the channel.... Finger style and much more about Chord Tones (re Carol Kaye) would be very welcomed...

Not to be contrarian, but there are plenty of videos of Cliff using single-finger styles. Not exclusively, but he does do it.

Niera of course not. Why else would there be a comment section if it weren't open to discussion and debate and why leave a comment if I wasn't expecting the exact same. I'm not going to lie I've seen very many if not all of the cliff videos I can find in I've never once picked up on him using this technique. Although a lot of his stuff is only audio sadly. So I'm not completely convinced, but I'm willing to invest time into searching for a video with him using this technique just to prove myself wrong. It would be of great help if you could direct me to one as an example.

I can do a video on that flutter style picking but to be honest, it's not something I use much. Chuck Rainey is the man when it comes to that style and Geddy Lee uses it too. It can be handy when playing a single note line in 16th or 32nd notes but aside from that, playing across strings and more intricate lines are just out of the question. On the subject of Cliff. He generally uses 2 finger picking. I feel like there is a lot of 'mythology' when it comes to Cliff mainly because there's a limited amount of footage and because he died so young. I was a big Cliff fan in the early 90s and learned the first 3 Metallica albums note for note. It's amazing how 'off' some of the early transcriptions were. He often played half time to the double time guitar riffs bit they are always written as straight doubling. That half time way of playing is a good way of fattening the low end and avoiding all that horrible messy clank at high speed. It sounds better but some people hate to think wasn't 'playing fast'.
