Duke University's prestigious basketball program has raised 4 NCAA Championship banners and has made 15 Final Fours. The tradition of this program rings with all of March Madness and college basketball fans. However, with UNC beating a heated rival for the Battle of Tobacco Road and many other facets, Duke is hated. Why exactly is this?

Is everyone forgetting how many good and great black players Duke has had and still get. I'm a life long Duke fan(see the hat), and I love my squad cause I love all the great players they had, white or black. Plus the best coach of all time, Coach K.

its easier to win in pro sports than amateur. Yankees buy the best athletes and colleges have to actually scout and get young adults to go to their schools.

That is not the reason people hate Duke, North Carolina, UCLA, UConn, Kentucky are just as good in the world of college basketball. People hate Duke because of the elitist crap.

Lol no. UNC has a Korean War era championship and a complete bullshit “championship.” Kentucky hasn’t won shit since the 80s with the exception of the year AD played there, and UCLA dominated the 70s. It is because they win too much.

The ESPN "I Hate Christian Laettner" special sums this up perfectly. Mostly it's jealousy, of their success, Laettner's looks, and so on. It's worth the watch. FTR, the richest kid to ever play at Duke was probably Grant Hill, while Laettner, Hurley and many of their white players came from middle class or lower middle class background. Laettner had to scrub the gym floor at his high school to pay his tuition.

Edmund Wright I disagree, Laettner comes off as incredibly arrogant and so do several members of his family. He still is pretentious and he played dirty and never admits, hey I was wrong. Also, he never pays people back their money!

there are rich white kids at duke, same with every other school, probably a bit more at duke, but people have this stereotype that all duke students are this way and that is false. Consequently, there are white kids on the basketball team which is supposed to be a "black" sport. But Duke wins...a lot with these white kids. The problem is not Duke, it is people who hate them for their pigment. People think that since his is white and goes to duke he is an asshole, while most of the ;people saying this are WHITE. Now, there are some players at duke, like every school that were/are very arrogant and annoying such as laettner. I understand why people hate him, its not because he was white, its because he was a jerk. To conclude people hate duke because of this stereotype that has engulfed all duke students, and is completely unfair. Duke also wins a lot and that makes people very jealous because they aren't where "Duke is"

I hate Duke. Yes, because they win (what would be the point in hating a team that loses all the time?). But not just for that. It is the fawning coverage, the way refs defer to them and the jerks like Laetner and Grayson Allen. Even last night fouling with 2 seconds left when down by 10 - whining to the refs the whole time.

Hope I wake up this thread again. I don't hate Duke... I hate that they always get the nations top players. And I truly believe, at least in my case, it's not so much jealousy as annoyance. The same reason I don't like Alabama football. Do you know that in a 3 yr span Duke had 20% of the nations 5 star players? Half these kids don't even play. That's what I hate. Spread the wealth! BTW there have been a lot of individual Duke players that I really enjoyed watching. So no , it's not hate in my case.

I can understand why people hate Duke. Laettner was a prick in the regional final game against UK. But I didn't personally experience that game so I can't hate Duke. But as a UK fan I'm required to hate Duke. I actually hate Uconn more because they beat twice in the NCAA tournament (2011, 2014).

Apparently the uptight white kid thing Duke fans have is BS, because I'm country. I love Country music, I treat everyone with respect, I fish and hunt. I consider myself a closet Duke fan (even though I'm more and more coming out of the closet). Dukies consistently have decent players - and, for that matter, decent white players. Contrast that with a team I can't stand, KU, which tends to attract highly overrated white players. Did I mention I can't stand Roy F. Williams?

Duke is not the College Basketball equivalent of the New York Yankees, they maybe hated like the Yankees are, but Kentucky is the better equivalent to the Yankees. Kentucky has been a power for almost 80 years, the winningest program in college basketball. Duke is a one coach wonder, a long tenured coach, but still one coach (kinda like UCLA). I do not count UNC either now that these 18 years of cheating have been exposed, but Kansas is really the only other program to have sustained elite play over many coaches. But people hate Duke due to the arrogance of the players and coach, not to mention the fans the horrible "chants" they come up with. I would argue that Kentucky is more hated now because they were already a hated program then they hired Calipari who is hated. Then to pile on, he started to absolutely dominate at UK, while Duke has developed a tenancy to finish prematurely, shall we say.

The Yankees have carried their winning tradition over from coach to coach, generation to generation (mostly). Duke has not. Duke has had one long and very impressive (and it kills me to say that) run under 1 Hall of Fame coach. Kentucky has won sense the 1940s under 5 great coaches and 2 mistakes (though Sutton had the 84 team).

Nick Schulte UNC is better than Kentucky. Everyone cheats, including Kentucky. Had they won this year, they would have probably been investigated and found that a bunch of y'all's players do not go to class.

howard baxter In what world is UNC better then UK? We have more wins, more NCAA tournament wins, and more Championships. UNC has 1 more Final Four appearance, woohoo. And your statement makes no sense. The NCAA does not have a history of stripping championships. Both Kansas and Memphis were under investigation in 2009, Kansas won, Memphis gets in trouble. It is both cynical and naive to claim everyone cheats just because your school has been busted for 18 years worth of academic fraud.
