Hello, friends! Well, this video marks 4 out of my last 5 episodes being demonetized. My channel survives on monetization and the occasional sponsor, like this episode. If you can, please consider becoming a patron at patreon.com/secondthought. Every dollar helps me pay the bills and keep producing this kind of content. I hope you all enjoy the video!

Fluffynator it’s a bit 1984 which is what has people concern. Let’s say 10 years from now the US makes going to church mandatory. Let’s also say you are not religious and would rather not go. Well now that they know everywhere you go they know you weren’t at church and can send a fine your way or some kind of re-education police. The issue with mass surveillance isn’t the actual surveillance but the abuse of power that it can and will lead to.
@theglitchcounter264
@theglitchcounter264 4 жыл бұрын
Fluffynator the issue is that companies could use this kind of info to easily deny you coverage for insurance, or reject loans on information you don’t know they have. They would have power over nearly every facet of your life. Everything is already controlled in a similar way. But it will be far worse and so deep seated it can never be gotten out.

They’d be able to work you out. You’d end up going to your place of work at a certain time, and they’d be able to correlate that with your roster. Or they’d count the hours and run it against your pay check. They’d filter by little irregularities like having a morning off here or there for a kids award presentation at school assembly, or the visiting a GP. If not those things, then you don’t have an infinite number of shoes, or clothes. They’d match that somehow. Even if you buy generic clothes, they’d be able to build a database on your walk style, so you’d be given a unique entry there. Breach any one of these things with a positive ID of you, and they could backdate the whole lot of data, and add it to your profile. Despite everything said in this video, I’m not worried by the advent and proliferation of such technology. I don’t go to protests. I’m not involved in any political party planning/meetings/policy making/etc. I’m reasonably happy with how things are in the country right now, and I’m not concerned by “big brother” reading my comments on forums like this.

well, since good and bad are probably the most subjective things ever, this kind of black and white thinking isn't helping anyone. sometimes we understand why a "bad guy" is doing what he does. and many (if not most) people actually don't care how "bad" they are in your eyes.

The irony of calling a big data firm 'Palantir' is remarkable when the fictional magic artifact(s) of the same name encapsulates the inherent flaws in data collection/analysis tech. While it is not malicious nor inaccurate per se, it does not provide adequate context for the information it presents (e.g. whether an event happened in the past or future, or the intentions of key persons), causing misinterpretations reinforced by misguided trust in the system. Furthermore, it is not secure from eavesdropping, and can be manipulated by powerful figures by deceptively editing its output, controlling the user to serve their own agendas. Thus, we are in the position of Saruman who foolishly forsook his wisdom for 'subtle arts and devices'; info without sense is practically nonsense. By mistakenly trading our wits for a mere glut of knowledge, we play right into the hands of enemies who're all too happy to do the thinking for us.

I doubt Africa is safe. I'm Kenyan, and about a year ago, our government suddenly enforced all the people within the country to have their fingerprints and photo taken. The reason given was that it would allow for faster access to government services but I am certain that more was going on, especially with how urgent the government made this whole situation become. If you didn't know, China has a very large presence in Africa and helps develop infrastructure for many nations, Kenya included. This has led to a debt to China in many countries. I like to think that maybe somewhere in that negotiation, personal data of all citizens was given to the CCP to either enhance facial recognition systems or even build a database as China gets hold of more and more power over African nations. This is just a theory though, but I don't think it is unreasonable.

I gave a presentation in class once on how dangerous this technology is. There are 2-3 ways to fool the tech tho. There are makeup techniques that can effectively completely alter your facial features to the point where you're unrecognizable to software. However, if you don't feel like putting on a bucket of paint every time you leave the house, you can apply makeup in ways that mask the specific parts of the face that the software uses to ID you, which confuses it. There are special reflective glasses you can wear that make it difficult for camera lenses to pick up on your face because the glasses reflect enough glare to mask you. However, the glare is invisible to the naked eye, and the glasses are fairly inconspicuous, so you don't look like a total wacko in public.

It is a very interesting topic, by one hand, with this technology we have the potential power to elimitante terrorist, murderers, druglords etc... (which is good), but by the other had we can break the limits of our own privacy (in favor of security) allowing people in the goverment to (to say the least) do inmoral actions, such as intimidation of political leaders and his followers, racial bias, discrimination or even that unfair arrest. It raises to me the question of ¿do you think that with strong institutions and laws, we can avoid this break on privacy, and use it only in very dangerous people?... Keep up with the good content :D (sorry for my english)

If not the government, different interest groups can try to trick the algorithm to think somebody did something they actually didn't. It's not just your own selfies, if a selfie from somebody's phone shows you being supposedly somewhere you actually weren't, that'd be a great way to frame for a crime. That doesn't even start with cameras being on cars, on tvs/electronics, on every building, and even on unmanned police drones (a $500 drone would be cheaper than a police car for trying to bust people for petty crimes).

Facial recognition has long been recognized as a threaten technology to privacy. Instead of relying on regulations from the government, it is equally if not more important to develop technological counter measures (e.g. special clothes designed to mess up with facial recognition, or even biological techniques that will temporarily change certain biological characteristics). Unfortunately, this area is being severely under funded and underdeveloped as it has far less potential market and applications than facial recognitions.

Don't see why it wouldn't be legal. The target is in a public space, so their picture can be taken. If they've also put their pictures on Fakebook then those are also public. So the app only uses information that has been made public by the target. In some countries however (like Germany) it is illegal to take a photograph of someone's face in public without their permission, so problem solved - one of the pieces of data used by the algorithm is restricted by law and the app is then illegal.

@@justin.a9494 probably because environmental health would get you a lot of backlash from corporations that produce pollution, especially oil. Nationalizing healthcare will probably get you backlash from corporations trying to profit off of healthcare and drugs. Reducing funding from the military gets you backlash from the companies that produce things for the military. So all in all, assuming that all of the above can and will try to stop you (which I won't try to pretend to know how they'd react), you'd be up against a lot of people willing to do just about anything for an extra buck. It is to note that in the days of Carnegie, Rockefeller, and J.P. Morgan (early 1900's), their corporations were impossibly massive; Rockefeller, for instance, was worth $400 billion in adjusted dollars. All the above, pretty much about the richest men in the world, met together and pitched in $20 million in un-adjusted dollars to buy the president (McKinley) because the opposing political candidate was talking about dissolving "monopolies" due to their massive evil; as far as I know, Car/Rock, idk about Morgan, horribly mis-treated workers to borderline unlivable conditions. However, some Anarchist guy (I think from Poland) assassinated McKinley. Now, this put them in massive trouble. His VP, Theodore Roosevelt, also hated monopolies and wanted to abolish them via legislation. They had made him V.P. to try to control him, but now he was president. As president, he became the "trust buster" and broke up their corporations, as far I as know. Basically, their companies had to be controlled by multiple different people, reducing coordinated corruption to a degree. As a lesson from this, I saw that the above 3 people were willing to do a lot to make money, but weren't willing to try to undermine our democracy and unseat Roosevelt. However, after the Impeachment of Trump, it seems clear that many politicians and wealthy of today are willing to undermine the law in order to serve their own ends.

Its also common to get in trouble for now reason, especially when all someone influential just points a finger and youre in trouble even if you have no idea whats going on. There could be stuff on ppls records that shouldnt be there and no way to fix it and they would be stuck with the bs when out doing normal day to day stuff
