I was raised a Jehovah’s Witness since birth. I wasn’t allowed to read anything not approved/printed by the Watchtower Society. I left, and now I’m Orthodox. But I’m still trying to catch up on the idea that we can read about these subjects. Especially things about magic. I’m not saying I’m right. Just that I’m TRYING TO UNDERSTAND. Thanks for this video. Please help me understand more? Particularly about witches/magic, like in the Lion, Witch, and Wardrobe. Thank you!

Claudia I'm sorry I didn't answer before ... the best thing to do would be to talk to your priest the church is a hospital but everybody's diagnosis is different I suppose. Some intellectuals appreciate the allegorical aspect fiction such as The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe because it was supposedly written about the gospel or something like that by CS Lewis. Unfortunately my intellect is not so advanced so I see Lions witches and I am turned off. Many of our Saints strongly disagree with magic and the occult just read the story of Saint cyprian and Justina. So although some of these works of fiction are well-intended metaphorical studies and are of benefit to some I think they also is a slippery slope aspect to them which open the door 2 fantasy which is dangerous according to the church. bottom line my sister is that you need to seek the advice of the church in the Saints KZfaq will only always give us half truth

As my parish priest said, we live in the world and there's no problem in partaking in things of this world as longs we follow the teachings of the Fathers and the Church. If you read ficction as ficction I don't think there's a problem. Of course we MUST avoid everything that goes against Orthodox beliefs and guard our thoughts and feelings when reading non-christian themed books. I enjoy playing videogames, for example, but i play them as games only and not something that will change my worldview or change my relation with God. One should always put God and His Kingdom first, praying is more important then reading novels. The golden rule for me is: Futtile things must not interfere with prayer, attending to divine liturgy and fasting. But if it is not harmful, there's no problem

I used to love comic books as a kid. Taught me to love to read. I'm Orthodox now because it's so interesting just like those comics years ago.

This is old ideas or rather obvious to me anyways: I’m old guy... I have always thought Star Wars, novel Dune, Harry Potter , on and on would be highly influential in generating interest in priestly and religious life ... it would cause folks to take a “relook” at the real thing. At least, the genre would require readers and film views to have more respect on the liturgy.

My thought on fantasy is that it should be aligned with patterns which are lived out among the people who live them. For example, when we tell the Santa myth, it reflects the pattern of yuletide gift giving. Fantasy becomes a problem when the myth becomes a substitute for naturally produced culture, which is of particular problem in the age of mass media.

According to some Orthodox saints, imagination is not good. Demons operate in our imagination, that is way we use icons.

Without Imagination what do we have? Reality? With just reality there can be no spirituality, nor can there be no mystery. Imagination is what allows us to realize the beauty that is what we dont know, and to beautify what we do know. Imagination is how we create the most beautiful hymns and churches. Also god made everything so it cant be inherently bad, it is those who are untrained to temptation so to a point where Imagination is too dangerous that it is a problem. So I will agree that will must be trained before Imagination can take root safely in our minds :). Glory to God!

got to disagree on this has anybody read what the church fathers say about fantasy and Imagination? A lot of young intellectuals coming to Orthodoxy by way of literature and what not and that's okay but Orthodoxy doesn't need any Innovations or clever ways to lure people in....

Coler Izm ...did you see my comment about witches? I’m trying to understand all this, myself. I was hoping for an answer, in my other comment, and I got some likes, but no replies. Just hoping to “get it”.

It's not an innovation on Orthodoxy, It's not an adition to the Creed or new dogma, Just like Tolkien is not an innovation to Catholicism. It's just a book with Orthodoxy as its foundations.
