Let's get something straight, Batman is THE MOST popular comic book hero of all time. Even more than Superman or Spider-Man. While those aforementioned superheroes are certainly titans of pop culture, no hero has captured the imaginations of comic book readers, cinephiles, casual movie goeers, and, most importantly, filmmakers the way the world's greatest detective has. And that keyword, detective, might just offer us a clue as to why people love Batman why directors love Batman and are drawn to telling stories about him. Unlike say a Spider-Man or Wolverine, Batman was a hero informed not just by pulpy adventure fiction, but detective fiction, noir stories. His very origin began in a series of comics quite literal called Detective Comics. Because of this cross pollination of genres, Batman affords filmmakers the latitude to tell an infinite number of possible Batman stories. It's why something like The Dark Knight can exist alongside interpretations such as Batman Forever and Batman & Robin. There are varying degrees to which Batman can exist on screen and a lot of that comes down to which elements of the characters origin drew filmmakers to him. That malleability also allows varying degrees of auteurs to come in and bput their distinct stamp on the caped crusader. It's fascinating that directors like Tim Burton, Joel Schumacher, Christopher Nolan, Zack Snyder, and now Matt Reeves are itching to and invested in telling Batman stories and not Captain America or Spider-Man stories. There's an innately cinematic quality to the character that makes him far more than just a comic book hero. I think its because each filmmaker can give its unique spin on batman. Tim Burton was moody and tragic. Christopher Nolan was gritty and realistic. Zack Snider was very character heav. While joel Schumacher was camp and silly like adam west. Have a lovely day

I always subconsciously knew that filmmakers are drawn closer to Batman more than any other comic book character (even filmmakers who are not a fan of superhero movies), but I didn't clearly realize this until I saw your video. Your reason is correct as well. Batman's stories are superhero tales only once in a while because most of the time, they actually deal with street-level crime.

Some people may not understand how popular batman is outside the US, where I grew up people didn't know what comic books are or superhero characters and all that, yet we still knew batman is, and perhaps equally superman, more with kids tho, we wanted to fly like him. As I grew up batman became my favorite fiction character.

One thing I like about Batman is that he can be translated for any genre in Cinema. Comedy, tragedy, mystery, investigation, detective, action, adventure, horror, superhero, sci fi, you name it. He can be campy, dark, or real and can be great in all of them. Batman is the most versatile of them all ❤️

thats the sad part superman got the short stick... heck other heroes gone to obscure, is why i love james gun movie series he focus not popular well known character since, and why i love DCAU they done good job balance all character... not put 100% on batman like fuk now im hate batman... love for that character just gone since everybody just want to do batman movie.

Batman and Spider-Man have been redone so many times because they are the most relatable and normal superheros you can find imo. Relatability and Versimilitude is a huge seĺling point for modern audiences. Batman Forever btw like Raimi's Spider-Man 3 is a movie I can enjoy just how bombastic and self aware of how OTT , funny and insane it is . Batman and Robin and TASM 2 I'm not so keen on.

I watched The Batman. It's primarily a crime/mystery noir film. Matt Reeves' take on Batman's character is about him learning to have more hope, be more empathetic and compassionate, learn more self-control of his anger, and learn to also channel his trauma into more positive things. It's the start of the transition from vigilante to hero. Don't expect Batman in the film to be a super smart detective or fighter though. He isn't dumb by any means, but he is show as still clearly inexperienced and naive in many ways. I don't say that as a criticism. The film really captures a Gotham with personality, out of this world. And it's primarily a slow-burn crime/mystery noir than an action movie. Loved that. You also have to watch it on a good theater. So many theaters have shitty sound that you can barely understand the dialogue, and also shitty resolution, color contrast and clarity in the image. A film like The Batman specially demands a good theater, because otherwise the dark cinematography gets ruined. I speak from experience. I think atmosphere, cinematography and characterization are easily the film's biggest virtues.

Idk how popular Batman is in the US but as someone from a third-world country, Batman is very popular. Since I was a kid everyone in my neighborhood wants to play batman when we play around. The only superhero my parents or a lot of other parents know is Batman and this was during Sam Raimi's spider-man era. A lot of ppl back in the day don't even consider Superman a hero, rather just a strong alien with a cape.

Batman is very popular in US because half of the box office earnings of Batman films generally come from US market. There are some exceptions to this but mostly it is like that. Half of the The Dark Knight box office, half of the The Batman box office. It's a trend with Batman movies.

Superman is the most recognized world wide. Spider-man sells the most action figures and toys, but Batman is the favorite among comic book readers, and that's why his character hasn't been rebooted. I agree with everything you say, but I wanted to add my two cents.

I'm starting to see James Bond the same way. He's always been very malleable, with the tones of films varying wildly throughout his 60 years on screen. The difference is that's its only been very recently with Daniel Craig's run that we've seen several auteur directors jumping into the franchise.

Yeah still James Bond still does not go the extreme batman can go. I mean the difference between 66 batman and modern batman interpretations is like day & night. Whereas the campiest Roger Moore Bond films were still pretty dark and serious.

Love the Nolan trilogy most out of all this series, as it gave the Batman finally a new age of modernization and relation with the stories, and I actually rewatched the entire trilogy in a week in preparation for The Batman! TDKR to me showed why filmakers love this character. He can lose his butler, all the money he owned in a fraud, his back broken, Gotham's idol destroyed, and right in the pit, the lowest point in all of earth. And yet it's his stratospheric spirit and conviction to give Gotham a hero they didn't deserve but needed, to come back and defeat the forces that destroyed it.

Dude this. I’ve never understood the hate TDKR gets. Sure the villain maybe isn’t as memorable as Ledger’s Joker, but your point about Batman being a beacon of hope is one that goes unnoticed too often. Superman is the one who gets called a boy scout but the guy is essentially a god amongst men (particular in film adaptations). Batman’s just a regular dude who chooses to fight crime.

Batman is famous because, he shows anyone can be a hero. Through sheer willpower, hard work and his smartness, he has gone toe to toe with legends like Superman and Darkseid and triumphed. He is more relatable than other superheroes like Flash, Green Lantern, Hulk, Superman and others.

The performances in The Dark Knight solidified my love for film and especially Batman. I think part of his allure is the regularness of his superheroism, he's not endowed with any special powers, he's just "rich, rich and nuts" to quote Pete Holmes Batman. Noire film lives on forever through The Batman

Batman is not supposed to be ideal man. He is a loner. He sacrifices his personal and professional life for his goal of ridding Gotham of crime. I think Batman is an interesting character, but Superman is the ideal man. He sees the potential of the human race, and wants to help everyone be their best possible selves. He is one of the most powerful characters in the DCU, and one of its most humble.

In order to build him back up in ZSJL. There was clear reasoning behind his divisive decisions. It certainly won't be for everyone, but I don't think that means he misunderstands Batman.

@@FilmSpeak I truly appreciate seeing comments like these. Definitely divisive but the idea that Zack doesn't understand the character has been so tiring to hear over the years. I'm glad that the Snyder Cut exists now and people actually see what he was doing with the character. I think everyone expected a movie called Batman v Superman to not make one of them the villain, even though the film makes it clear that this is not normal behavior for him. And you know who wanted this villainous Batman? WB. They even wanted him to brand Luthor, undoing the arc the film put him on. Zack was just making the best of a bad situation and as a lifelong Batman fan, I think he did an amazing job.

I think the tone of Gotham is definitive. It's setting is timeless, both gritty and goofy, has amazing heart and sadness, boasts soo many genres that Batman has existed in simultaniously without breaking immersion and has a colorful cast of characters that you can love to hate or simply love.

I had a fan experience & an opportunity to watch the Batman. What an awesome introduction to an even more grounded, young and restless Bruce Wayne. With only two years for young Batman the film is dark, it’s gritty and it’s all about the detective work. This is why we all love Batman, because he has so many layers up on layers to explore. Matt Reeves just revolutionized the Riddler. Paul Dano was amazing, pretty much every cast is amazing. What I really like is that the film shows us how young Batman is scared to even fly off high rise buildings stil, but also throws out his body with no hesitation to enemy bullets, sometimes not being able to control his anger during a fight. He gets shot in the chest, punched in the head and doesn’t give in. But above all it haunts him to see anyone get hurt because he’s still affected by the death of his parents. The cinematography is amazing, and boy the city of Gotham is just on another level. You’ll get scared to even pass by the city let alone live there. Shows the true nature of corruption and political deceives. Reeves created a unique Batman sets just as Nolan’s was different than Tim Burton, as well as for Zack Snyders Batman. Each directors build their own unique elements and universe for the Batman. Perhaps the greatest advantage is that character Batman is so versatile and any director can interpret it based on the excellent comic books written. DC needs to focus on these kind of movies because honestly they’re just perfect. I’m hoping we will get another amazing trilogy if it continues like this. My respects to all the previous and current directors for giving us different types of Batman. I really like all the Batman iterations since 2005. (Baleman, Batfleck. & Battison).

I watched No Way Home on December, and some kid screamed SPIDER-MAN BEST HERO EVERRR, and a man screamed NAH IT'S BATMAN, and the kid just didn't know what to answer, even with the hype for spidey lol

In the Batman'66 show, Bruce mentions the death of his parents as the driving force behind his bat-themed war against criminals in the first episode, so I don't think you need to count it as an exception. I kind of understand why you don't want to class it with the Serious Interpretations. However, it couldn't be MORE "auteur"; its unique stylized approach, like it or not, saved the character at the time and is part of the reason he was around for all these later interpretations.

I loved this video. What a phenomenal breakdown of the humanity Batman brings to the concept of a character. You mention Bob Kane and Bill Finger a few times and if you haven’t seen it, ‘Batman & Bill” is a great doc about some claims regarding the creation of the character. Keep up the amazing content!

This is an example of why the symbiote suit was one of the best things to ever happen to spiderman. It allowed creators to change the genre of Spider-Man by fundamentally changing Peter Parker, yet in a way that is in universe logical. Kraven's Last Hunt is the prime example that comes to mind, it is the complete opposite of your typical "Spider-Man" story and thats why it ranks as one of the best.

Superman talking a Western gang through their problems without hurting anyone because of hostages sounds like a very sweet story that wouldn't be out of place in a one-off comic issue. Just because Hollywood has shoehorned other heroes into dedicated roles doesn't mean they can never be anything else. I think the teen comedy example with Spider-Man failed because of the surrounding world they tried to force him into, preventing him from growing up in an isolated neighborhood where those interpersonal relationships can shine. It reminds me a lot of Sean McKeever's surprisingly engaging romances and fun romps in concept. In the age of reboots, I'd say it's especially important for each take on an IP to stand out from the rest. One of the biggest criticisms of the MCU is that it's all stylistically identical, and the only defense anyone can offer is "It just has to be that way for this and that logistical reason," at which point we're not talking about filmmaking anymore, we're taking about business. I guarantee that not only can superhero movies in general have district genres, but they would be better for it, and Batman proves it

I just love superman the most and I'm one of those that say that people just don't understand the potential of the character. The people and world is getting a darker more cynical mindset for some reasons batman fits but superman is the positive sort of father figure of comics, it may be a qliche but it's true we need some positive, likable person in a cape in our lives. That's real cinema, inspiring and entertaining the audience.

Filmmakers love Batman because he is SO popular, and this popularity comes from the fact that he has no superpowers. Superman is an alien, Spidey was bit by a radioactive spider, but Batman is just a regular dude, so we can all be him, that's why he is so popular imo.

Other superheroes are popular, sure, but characters like Spider-Man, Superman, Captain America, they’re not as psychologically interesting, at least on first look, as Batman is. Batman has a long and coveted motion picture history going back to the 40s, and every variation since has been startlingly different, with the absurdist camp nature of the Adam West movie and series, the gothic look of Tim Burton’s films, and the gritty crime drama of Nolan. Heck, when the DCEU introduced him, they went for an older character, which the MCU probably wouldn’t have gone to. And while the DCEU had a grim dark aesthetic, they released a Lego Batman Movie. He’s very much a director’s character, directors get to explore him or tell stories surrounding him basically any way they want. Batman could essentially be inserted into any film or genre, noir, neo-western, superhero, heck, there’s even a book depicting as if he was real between 1919 and 1939. He’s also very deeply routed in the world immediately around him. Gotham.

One of Spider-Man’s greatest stories is Kravens Last Hunt, the melding of genres is definitely still applicable to this character…like it is to almost all street level heroes.

Try doing a detective noir tgriller like the batman with all moody and seriousness. As good as spiderman noir is it doesent quite break tge mold and I am sure it might not be well received. Whrereas the lego batman movie and as the video said batman forevee were box office success. (PS: I'm not shitting on spiderman but batman is tooooo versatile and malleable.) Also no daredevil won't be because he is limited in scope you know being a b list hero in maevel.

I agree! I have something to add to this conversation if you’ll hear it out. You’re right to point out the outlier as Batman ‘66. To me Batman 1966 is the quintessential Batman which all the Batman movies have used as inspiration or are in conversation with apart from Batman VS Superman. I agree you can do anything with Batman- but I personally prefer the versions of Batman that take inspiration from 1960s Batman and the comics because they feel like the same character with different takes whereas in BVS, Ben Affleck’s Batman is just a glorified anti hero that is not quite the same idea as the other Batmen taking inspiration entirely from the aesthetic and not the actual character (apart from Frank Miller’s Dark Knight Returns version). So I like that BVS did this because it’s an interesting comparison- it has sort of destroyed the character of Batman which was what Snyder was aiming to do and then rebuild in Justice League. It doesn’t quite work for me because it’s not subjective enough and the camera glorifies Batman equally as much in BVS and the Snyder Cut. Anyway, this is why I’m excited for The Batman because it’s an even darker take that still seems partly inspired by 60s Batman. I’d argue that while there’s not an ‘auteur’ vision per say on Batman 66- it is a almost parodical comedic take on the character different to the comics that defines the character in a more satisfying way than what feels like a pointless deconstruction of Batman in BVS. So I think Batman is a character that you can do any genre with- but some filmmakers have totally different Batman characters- when really you can keep the same 60s version of Batman and create similar different versions that still apply to different stories and visions. Don’t know if that made sense 😂

Coz the show wasn't at all different to the comics that existed during that time. I'd say it was pretty damn faithful to the comics of the 60s in terms of tone and silliness, but I agree that they turned the dial way up and into parody territory. That's not a criticism, though. I think the campy, self-aware Batman '66 is stupidly brilliant and charming. 😄 Having said that, I also think Zack Snyder's Batman is just as valid an interpretation as any other. Not a fan of Schumacher's Batman and Robin, but I know some people love it and that's cool too.

ITA batman always felt like something different to all other major heroes be it marvel or dc he is something different....being more street level and just alot of his stories etc you can make material with him that does not feel or look like the typical superhero stuff.....of the larger dc and marvel universes....I imagine that has to appeal to directors who don't have to worry about incorporating other stuff and characters they couldn't careless about...im really grateful batman movies took off way before the era of cinematic universes it really shows the difference directors can make burton, schumacher nolan and reeves all vastly different

I hate it when people say that they are 1000s of ways to interpret a batman. Batman has an identity and there is a definitive set of traits batman has across almost every interpretation. No Batman is a poster child for traumatic growth. A terrible meaningless and senseless tragedy happened to him but instead of being controlled by his fate, he took control of the situation and transformed into the best version of himself. He set goals for himself and trained himself to peak mental and physical perfection. *When we step back to gaze long upon the great Batman tapestry, when we look for the common thread woven through it by Kane, Finger, Fox, O’Neil, Englehart, and that endless line of creators, those who have come and gone as well as those who are still weaving, what do we see? We see a hero. We see someone we’d want on our side, a figure we’d love to call forth from our shadows and hurl at those who would do us wrong. We see that part of ourselves that wants to scare all of life’s bullies away* and we like it. He is driven. He is like a revolutionary who stands up to tyrants or the activists who fight against great odds to make this world a better place. Out of tragedy, great good can arise. Horrible events have spurred individuals like the founder of MADD on to great, albeit unusual, achievements. They discovered their lives’ missions.

In my opinion, I think it’s Batman’s iconography is what makes so many people want to make a movie about him, either in direct to Dvd movies like Under the red hood or a mainstream film. While I would like to see other B list characters like Ratcatcher, Polka dot man or Green Lantern in more films, Id still pay tickets to see new Batman films

I've been feeling a slow dislike to the Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight Trilogy. Why? Mostly because the fandom uses its greatness to slap the other DC Films. It actually makes me feel sorry for the DCEU and how it bashes Ben Affleck's Batman. It's because of that, he will stop playing Batman after The Flash movie. And poor Jared Leto. He never got a chance with his Joker. Every DK fan compared him to Heath Ledger and was destroyed.

I think if there was maybe more time between reboots or even another reboot in between, Batfleck would have been received much better. The Nolan trilogy to me has never felt much like Batman, really only Begins does. While Batfleck is clearly portrayed as an antagonist in BvS, it still feels to me more like Batman than any live action film has really achieved. Personally, I see a lot of people who love the Nolan trilogy then use that as evidence Batman should never kill under any circumstance, as if Bale's Batman doesn't kill several people in the trilogy. It seems like that's the MAIN gripe people have with Batfleck and I find that absolutely silly, especially given that BvS quite clearly condemns his actions.

I think that Ben Affleck is walking away, not because of the comparison to the Nolan films, but based on the fact the production of the films he's taken part in have been a huge mess, by and large, and the quality of the films that have emerged from these fiascos hasnt been very high. As a working professional, it makes sense to me that he might become fed up and decide to walk. Affleck was a GREAT Batman, but sadly I don't think he has a great batman film to his name.

In a recent interview Sami Rami said that he would like to make a Batman movie. The director who made greatest spiderman/Peter Parker movie spiderman 2. I remember that even Russo brothers said same thing three years ago. Batman franchise attract top quality skills in industry and also because of that the pressure to make any Batman related project is very heavy. Batman franchise includes joker movie too, since that movie had Waynes as one of main characters. I remember people in theaters loosing their minds when Arthur/Joker met very young Bruce Wayne.

Spiderman is versitile though, there's just certain "rules" that the character has to obey to be Spiderman, the spider-verse shows just how much you can stretch it. Same as Batman, there's a breaking point, which many think was crossed on the Snyder version for example.

This is such a good analysis. Batman is a special character, you can look at basically every pop culture product and there's some excellent Batman there. Animation? Yes. Comics? Yes. Video games? Yes. Film? Oh fuck yes. I think a lot of us saw this even as children. Batman is DIFFERENT. I love all superheroes, but there is only one Batman. Long live the king.

The second I saw Zacks face in the title I knew, people would be arguing about him and his interpretation of Batman. And it's only ever him. No one ever complains about Nolan's Batman being more like Superman. Or Shumockers not being dark enough. It's always just Zack dosent understand Batman, because he made him dark. And everytime I hear that I cringe. ITS BATMAN. This video is literally about how he is allowed to have different interpretations. Not meaning any one is wrong, just different. And if you shit on Zacks Bat because he's different. Then it is YOU who misses the point. And, can we please just be honest for once. He's really not that different of a Batman. Like seriously. He's bruding but smart, he's got the gadgets and the cool suit. He's mysterious and is viewed as a creature of the night by his enemy's as he wanted to be. Him going a little to far over the line is the entire point of his arc in that movie. Batman is allowed to be interpreted differently. That's half of what makes the character interesting. It is as Christopher Nolan once said "Batman is a character who thrives on reinterpretation." It is what makes him unique. And I love the fact that tons of great directors are getting a chance to do something different with the Bat. You may not like it each time. But you have to at the bear minimum, respect their artistic vision. And because st the end of the day that is what movies are, art. You don't have to like the art all the time, that's why it's "subjective". But you have to at least respect the intent behind it. Just simply trying to create something new.

And I think I remember Kilmer's Batman setting someone on fire with Batmobile's flamethrowers. West and Clooney are pretty much the only ones that never killed anyone, at least as far as I know.
