@PrincessNine6 жыл бұрын
It came out after the console jump, was under marketed, art style was alienating, didn't have that look that 7 and 8 did where it seemed crazy and out there so it was more interesting, just had that classic traditional fantasy look. Honestly the answer is simple. It came out at the wrong time
@12exstar6 жыл бұрын
Because of character design, they didnt have cooler char like ff7 and 8 back there. Most people more like emo char such as Squall or Spiky hair and ridiculously long silver and fuckin long katana guy. In ff9 there is no cool char such as 2 previous ff. Look Quina, look Steiner with his loudly rusty boots, and Zidane who said like a monkey had a tail. Yeah i dislike that though that people more like appearance rather than what it is inside and its fact, in every aspect.

The first JRPG I ever played. I thought the idea of turn-based combat was stupid and mocked a classmate who liked such silly things. He was so passionate about JRPGs that he actually lent me his PSOne and FF9 just to prove me wrong. I still thought I wouldn't like it but I could never say no to playing a game. It took me 80 hours to beat it and it's my favorite video game to this very day. Years went by as I searched for the next amazing adventure game to give me the feeling that FF9 did. I've played FF7, Golden Sun 1&2, and recently Chrono Trigger. They were great but I never want to go back to them. I've played FF9 4 times already and I myself am in awe whenever I say it. Only the original World of Warcraft I loved more but it doesn't exist anymore. I recommend FF9 to anyone wanting to play their first JRPG because it even convinced a JRPG doubter like myself to love it. Oh, and Esto Gaza is an incredible song!

Try Suikoden 2 I loved FF9, and it's super fun to play at the beginning, but starting from disc 3 the story kinda gets gloomy and the game kinda lost the "charm" it had on the previous two disc. Plus it kinda gets weird at disc 4 where there is a lot of Zidane-clone and Zidane kinda goes into a breakdown which is very uncharacteristic of him. Suikoden 2 on the other hand, is just beautiful from the start to the end. I hope you'll give it a try ^_^
@starlyghtdrifter666 жыл бұрын
@@SandLion wow suikoden 2 Definitely one of the best RPGs ever made. I agree with you there, and I also don't like the final act of ffix, you're so right about the losing charm thing, I felt the same way. The first two thirds of the game are pure Bliss though. But then again, suikoden 2.....what a story
@jamesmiranda14496 жыл бұрын
Arwin Sanlia You're wrong about disc 4. Disc 4 is the Black Mage Village, the Nova Dragon fight & cut scene, & Memoria, which were All trippy & *Awesome* ! Memoria is the best final area of a game I've ever seen, being deep, trippy, and dark! Also, Zidane's breakdown is at the end of 💿3, which was a pivotal and awesomely dramatic part of the story. Maybe the start of 💿3 is a little boring and gloomy, but from Terra on it is undeniably amazing!! Like better than the rest of the game. Heck, from Esto Gaza on to be honest. I just think you really need to replay Final Fantasy 9! 😃

I remember watching my dad play this game as young as 4years old and finally getting to play it when I was 6-7. I played it so much... and even replayed it enough time that now at the age of 23 I’ve put maybe 5000+ hours into the game I’d like to say. Honestly not sure I never stopped playing. I just restart when I get close to the end or finish it. (I even got my boyfriend into the game and now he loves it!) It has a special place in my heart, it’s also nostalgic for me.... I remember sitting in a bean bag chair eating puppy chow my mom made me well playing card games in treno... or finding all the cats there. I remember exploring lindblum and loving how beautiful the town was. Or relaxing to the music of Dali. Just so many good memories made with this game. When my dad passed away 3-4 years ago I actually got a tattoo of garnet as a symbol of my dad and Is love for the game as well as the bond I had playing it with him or watching him play it. I also got garnet specifically because of her character and the trials and tribulations she went through. I feel like I identify a lot with her and she is a reminder to stay strong. I even have the language of tera around her saying rip dad. Honestly this game is the greatest for so many reasons to me... and I hope that more people can experience why in my opinion this game is so amazing. (One of my long time dreams is to see it remastered like they did for ff7... a gurl can hope lol) anyway sorry for the long comment I just wanted to add that your video really gave my nostalgic feels and I almost cried. It always makes me so happy and moves my heart when I find people who loved this game similar to how I did. So thank you for making this video.

Your Dad sounds awesome! I was born in 1984 and played the crap out of 7 and 9. 8 was not my cup of tea, though I played it through at least twice. 7, well I played that game through about a dozen times and as recent as 2014. Nothing and no other game have I played through and as much as 9. I have played it as recently as 2018 and I am getting that itch again. I think I would have liked your father and I am sorry that he passed, but happy he got you into this amazing game.

This is my favorite game in the series by far, and this is what Final Fantasy was meant to be. I prefer the structure of 9 and the pre-defined roles a lot more than the "everyone can do whatever" open endedness of 2, 3, 5, 8, 10, and others. It gives the characters identity and goes hand in hand with the lore. Having an open ended character system is flexible and fully customizable, but it makes the characters seem flat and bland, lacking their own unique role. In 9, each character feels unique and brings their very own skillset to the table, giving you a solid reason to choose one over the other, and I like that.
@diegocaru82683 жыл бұрын
Sameeee Every character in FFIX feels so unique. What I like the most is that their jobs are so significative in and out of battle, Zidane as a Tantalus thief, Garnet and Eiko as the last 2 Madain Sari summoners, Vivi as a black mage from an army that were being used in war, Steiner as an alexandrian knight and his tribulations on what are his duties as a knight vs his convictions as a human, and so on. I just adore the way FFIX treat its characters.

This game means so much to me. It was the first game i really got into. I cried 4 times while playing it, the 3 times i finished it plus the first time i played it and saw the sequence of Black Mages sacrificing themselves to save Vivi. It's amazing. To this day, i listen to its music, and i remember fondly how much i learned about myself thanks to it, I learnt about trust, identity and friendship, among other topics. I still love Vivi, Eiko, even Steiner. God i could mention all of the characters, sans the evildoers. But then again even Kuja had redeemable characteristics. What a great memory.

Vivi's struggle with the concept of mortality is one of the best handlings of the subject I've seen in a game (certainly for a traditional game rather than a modern indie or art house game). The most memorable line comes from the ghost of his adoptive grandpa, Quan, who says "life end when you die, but imagination share with others, last forever". I've carried that with me ever since.

*Spoilers ahead* Just recently replayed this game, having played it back when it first came out. I think it has aged really well. After the recent playthrough, I think one of the major themes is coming to terms with your own death, not letting the fear of death overcome you, and therefore making life meaningful in what you then CHOOSE to do with it. We see it clearly with Vivi, and the black mages in general. But we also see it with Zidane and Kuja, as they were both created by Garland (the irony there being that you find this out not long after Kuja manipulates the black mages in the same way Garland was manipulating him). Kuja of course represents the cautionary tale of this theme, and freaks out when unable to accept his own eventual, inevitable death, which provides us with the climax of the story. Afterwards we see Necron, whom, upon my first playthroughs of the game when I was younger, I thought was a pretty lame final boss; but after looking at him through this thematic lens of embracing a meaningful life versus fearing death, I actually find his inclusion a bit more appropriate, if not still slightly forced and heavy-handed. Some of my favorite moments from the game come from Vivi and his conversations with the other black mages, especially No. 288. Thanks for a great video!
@ivorymantis10264 жыл бұрын
Actually, if you look past the wonderful fantasy-like atmosphere of the game you'll see that the core concept of the game is Nihilism. So yeah, you're spot on. Hell, even the true final boss is core to this. Most of the main characters, as well, represent different 'phases' or 'mindsets' into approaching death. Vivi is straight existential crisis, Zidane is masking with courage and fellowship, Freya is depression, Quina is hedonism, etc.
@louievazquez7444 жыл бұрын
@@ivorymantis1026 I don't think the final boss was forced, in the end, Death, the 'Void', Chaos, etc. have usually been the end all be all of the Final Fantasy games. The very idea that you are ultimate facing the 'End', this defying supernatural being that goes beyond comprehension, and taking YOUR stand against it is something amazing. Kuja does what he does, destroying the world. And this guy comes to seal the deal and bring everything back to nothingness, it might be a little lackluster of course, the final boss providing little to nothing to the plot, but the scenery, the encounter, seeing something as twisted yet balanced as that thing. I will always remember that feeling facing the boss for the first time, it was different from the other FF final bosses. I felt less like I was saving the world, and more like I was just saving myself and those around me. I wasn't a hero, I was a human being taking my last stand against nothingness. It painted this picture, "This is the fight every living being has when they're near the end of just simply letting go (whether it is survival against something trying to take your life, your own dark thoughts bringing you to a hasty decision, holding on when you feel your time is up.) Everyone has there time to go. We decided that time wasn't here. Now! This is it! Now is the time to choose! Die and be free of pain or live and face your sorrows! - Auron

I remember when one of my closest friends had this and we would play it when it was a 4 disc game. When we were kids, we could never figure out how to beat Beatrix in Burmecia, but I've gotten older since and have been playing. Disc 1 was brilliant to setting up the story. You start off kidnapping the Princess, thinking her mother the Queen is the villain, but then you meet Kuja, éminence grise and true villain of the game. The setup all the way to the ending was one of the most complete stories. It's too bad video games will never be made like Final Fantasy 9 again, because the age of DLC means that they'll not just add more games or patches, but also the launch quality will never be truly great work.

FFIX was so special to me because of how presenting a beautiful, childlike fairy-tale enviroment they manage to have the most grounded and realistic characters of the franchise going through moral debates, philosophical crisis in a story much more complex than what the eye meets. It's like travelling to a whole different world, and none other final fantasy has evoked me so many feelings.

Great video and great take on the game. One thing that I wanted to add about why the class system works so well - each character's class was built into their personality and job. Zidane was a thief by class, and much of his storyline involves his back and forth alliance with Tantalus. Steiner, the tank, struggles with ideas of loyalty and honor. Its the same for the other classes as well. FFIX did characters so, so well.

Got FF9 for Christmas last month on the Switch. Even though I’d heard almost exclusively extremely positive reviews, the small of people talking about the game had me a bit nervous going in. “There’s no good it’s as good as that vocal minority say it is,” I thought. “They are speaking completely out of nostalgia.” Boy, was I wrong. After two weeks and 35 hours of total gameplay, I can comfortably say Final Fantasy IX is the best video game I’ve ever played. A soundtrack that is top three ever, outstanding gameplay (no, the combat is NOT slow. Go play NES FF1 where you stare at a bunch of 8-bit sprites twitching for five minutes at a time), a story that was both simple and complex at the same time, and to top it all off, amazing graphics for what it is, though I’m not a big graphics person. I was absolutely blown away

FF7 & FF9, Suikoden II, Chrono Cross and Chrono Trigger... After those games I basically stopped gaming. Now and then I purchase a game, give it a few hours, and simply quit. Boring, repetative, no imagination what so ever. Those classics I play from time to time. Til end. And it takes some real time to finish them! Great video! Brings back memories. This was the very first FF game, and the very first RPG, I played on a PS1 gifted to me by my dad (after several times of begging) a couple of years back. I was not into RPG games before but after watching my eldest brother get frustrated on some quests in FF9, I challenged myself to try the game. The story hits hard even at an early age; casting magics and summons (especially when the summon scene is in full cut), as well as the cinematic cutscenes, are pleasing to watch; the battle strategy on how to beat difficult bosses keeps your brain active and heart pounding. I even played this game again on mobile when the remastered version was released a few years back and it still felt the same. I’m planning to play this again on NSW. FF9 is my favorite FF game in the series!

I immediately asked my dad if he would get it for me and to my shock and awe he actually did. Unfortunatly there was a mix up... you see all I saw was Final Fantasy and just figured well that had to be the game I was playing... but it wasnt... it was FF9! I was so confused and annoyed at first like darn my dad just got me an expensive 4 disc game and it wasn't even what I wanted... but Im blabbering on. I remember the beautiful Alexandria, the busting with life streets of Lindblum, the depressing Burmecia, the feeling of discovering and exploring a brand new continent after exiting Fossil Roo, the night city of Treno, the fan battle system, the comedy, the drama, the music, the wonderful characters. Games like IX are released once in a decade. And something alse. I played the game recently again and nostalgia aside, you could traverse the world via airship in a minute, and still it felt vast.
