A travel guide to some of the best stops in Finland. We traveled Finland/Suomi in our self converted camper van and it was fantastic. We drove right from northern Lapland to Helsinki, passing through Kalajoki and having some extraordinary wildlife encounters (brown bears!) along the way.

Finland really does offer the ultimate escape from the rest of Europe. The forests and the wilderness is endless, and the set up and "right to roam" means that you have the freedom to enjoy being in nature unhindered. We also loved the wildlife, from reindeer on the roads to bears from secret lakeside hides, there was more wildlife in Finland than we'd seen on the rest of our trip through Europe.
Here are some handy links if you're planning your own trip to Finland:

REMEMBER!! If you are booking to go and see the bears, note that the EU65 accommodation package DOES NOT include a trip to see the bears, that must be added and booked additionally.

But in smaller cities its can be challenging to find info etc. Because small business owner dont have a large marketing budject´s. I do live more southern Finland myself, put i do go fishing all over the country. + my better half is a photographer, so we kind a travel kind a lot on home country. We have a mökki and have a sauna every time we are there. We also love Lohilaakso and smoked siika. Welcome back to Finland with your baby when ever you get stressed out. There's plenty of room for you to chill.

Hi guys, one Finn here. Thanks for the great video and compliments on our humble country. Venetsian festival is mostly held in western Finland and there are even some Finns that don't know about it. I do and I have them in my summer home every last Saturday of august, like it should. Typically I enjoy Finnish nature and our "every man rights" to roam around and go to sauna regularly, but I think we Finns don't value that as much as we should. It's just the way of our life here. Reindeers are typical animals on the roads of Lapland (yes it's my favorite domestic holiday destination I visit very often), but I have to admit... I've never seen a bear in the wild. In that aspect you guys have seen more Finnish wilderness than I.

So damn good how you two can sell a place or country. I know John knows his way around Suomi, but you are doing it with other countries too, countries that are not always associated with tourist travelling, like Norway, the Baltics and you've even sold me my birth country England, as well. My list of places-to-go is getting long..., very long, but Wales is still at the top (my surname originates from there) !! Thanks for your hours of work to get these vlogs out there for us, I for one appreciate them enormously. Thanks 👍, Steve🇨🇭.

Venetsia festival comes from Kokkola but it has spread bit on the coast. The best scenery in that weekend is absolutely in Kokkola, it is called the Festival of Light and Fire, there are fireworks, lights and lots and lots of candles and torches lining up the islands between Kokkola and Pietarsaari, along the 7 Bridges road. It is sort of our second New Years Day.

One thing to correct. "Suomi" (Finland) does not come from swamp (suo). It is actually a loan word from Proto-Baltic word žemē, which means land, area. Suomi originally meant only the very south-western part of Finland, where the tribe of suomalaiset (in English: Finns) live. Varsinaissuomi = Finns Proper in English. It's also the root for words Häme (in English Tavastia) and Sapmi/Sabme (In English: Lapland, in Finnish: Lappi/Saame). The tribe of hämäläiset (Tavastians) live in most of southern Finland, there's multitude of places with name Häme found from the Lake Ladoga to Bay of Bothnia, covers about half of Finland. And the Samit/Sápmelaččat tribes (in Finnish: saamelaiset, in English: Sami) live in Northern Norway, Sweden, Finland and the Kola Peninsula in North-Western Russia. The name "Finland" is what the Germanic languages speaking Scandinavians used and which also English adobted. That actually comes from older Germanic word meaning hunter-gathering lifestyle people which also was used of Slavic peoples Wenden/Winden whose land was called Wendland/Windland, and which still today is Venäjä (Russia) in Finnish. So Finnish word for Venäjä is a loan word from Germanic languages. And in Latin language the Slavs were called Veneti. The Baltic Sea has an old name the Wend Sea.

You´ll propably know this as you have lived in Kalajoki that Venetsialaiset is originaly from Kokkola and it is propably the biggest celebration in there. Even bigger than new year. Very important celebration for locals. I know that well for being from Kokkola and i have lived there over 35 years. I also have to disagree that Helsinki would be the best city. I always said that if i ever move somewhere in Finland, it would be Tampere. So now i have lived 6,5 years here. I have also lived two years in Stockholm Sweden. There is even longer sand beaches at Lohtaja. Lohtaja is about halfway between Kokkola and Kalajoki. Kokkola sure is nice summer city like most of the cities in Finland. Summer is the best time in Finland.

A long time ago when John was 20 (so a really long time ago 😂) on one of his first back pack trips he met what he thought back then was an old fella around your age. This dude was an inspiration to John because you don’t often see older travellers, especially ones living so free. 163 countries later and John remembers that man fondly, the only change is that old isn’t really old anymore, just a little wiser perhaps. :) go for it.

Hi Richard, fishing trips can be amazing in Finland. Head north to the larger rivers, grab yourself a permit and see what happens. Friends of mine have been lucky enough to catch 20kg sea salmon up there. If you miss out on a catch and want a sure catch place where lakes are stocked you could go to lohilaakso in Kalajoki, speak to Marja and mention us, you might get a discount or just a big smile! Sounds like you have a plan in your camper, you know those roads up there, it can be a bit wild, especially later in the season. Go steady friend and let us know how you get on. 🤙👍🚐🐟

Now during the Covid crisis Finns themselves have truly found the nature parks and the other nature destinations. And the "mökki-life" has been more popular than ever. You had a good timing, less local travellers in the end of the summer, July typically is the holiday month in Finland. The schools start in the mid August already. A fun fact 18:54: For some reason, Helsinki has plenty of Nepalese restaurants but only a few Indian :) Probably the less spicy Nepalese food works better in Finland.

In Finland we have this saying: "Tee ku tekisit itelles" "Do it like you would do it for yourself" witch translates to "make it so you yourself could watch/use/think of untill the rest of your life without shame or embarrasment" witch also seems to be national mentality of quality of given craft, people spend LONG time, year even to figure out what they are good at naturally, then they start doing it as a hobby and suddenly they've mastered something, it doesn't even matter if it's profitable or not due to top notch social security. The main thing is you like what you do and that is the reason Finland being the happiest country in the world, no stress of finances or working a shitty job and being unhappy.

Hello and thank you for the nice video. There was some interesting information that I did not even know, although I'm almost 60 and lived in several places. You mentioning all the berries and mushrooms reminded me (once again) of the fact that only some 10% of them are actually picked up by anyone. The rest - animals (including bears, yes) eat some, but most of them will simply rot. So there's a lot of them left for anyone to pick. For free. And of course the Finnish everyman's right lets you do it almost everywhere. Just leave some distance between you and inhabited premises - elsewhere you're still allowed to enjoy the delicacies of the nature, even if the forest is private property. Naturally, this right allows you to pick only the wild berries and mushrooms, but surely everyone can see if it's a man-made cultivation.

I loved everything else in your video, but the bear part is truly awful. Please, future tourists who come to Finland, don't go bear watching unless it's in a zoo. Bears who go eat in these bear watching spots get used to the human smell and they will little by little lose their natural fear towards humans. I'd hate for Finland to end up like Canada where bears are so wholly unafraid of people that they casually stroll into towns and residential areas and start digging through waste bins.

Bears getting used to people happens whether or not you have these kinds of setups. The bear population has been intentionally increased in the southern parts of Finland during the past 20-30 years, I'd say. Whereas up to the early 90's, bears were more inhabiting the northern parts of Finland which is much more sparsely populated. More bears in more densely populated areas obviously leads to more human encounters. Having bear observing opportunities do no really make much of a difference at all in the big picture.
