The Ford SVT Lightning is one of the most iconic sport trucks ever; but did you know it almost had a SUV-based sibling? Ford almost built a sport SUV called the Ford Thunder. So why didn’t they? We interviewed the man behind SVT John Coletti to find out why.

E85, independent pushrod rear suspension 600hp out of the 5.4, Garrett supercharged with a hydronic clutch arming system. It’s the mustang we all build today... colletti did it in 1997!

Back in 2001, I purchased a new svt focus and with this vehicle I received a certificate of authenticity. I can't recall for sure, but I think it was endorsed with John Coletti's signature.

As for former Taurus SHO driver, I really wanted the Contour SVT. Smaller car, similar HP... I also worked at Lorain Assembly building the Thunderbird/Cougars in 96 and 97. An SVT Thunderbird would have been great! Thanks for a great video!

Glad you informed us on why it wasn’t built, a lot of the Lightning guys never knew why but we did know that the Svt Thunder Expedition was a thing that never happened. There’s a couple guys that have made their own Thunder with a with a Lightning front end and wheels and even the 02/03 Harley Davidson front end and wheels 💪🏼⚡️ they look pretty sick .

I was one of the six Ford dealers on the SVT Advisory Panel. We got to drive the Thunder prototype on the Dearborn Proving Grounds, and every one of us said "hell yes" to building it for the public. Sliding tail out with the tire smoking around the turns on the short course is something I'll never forget.

There was a thunder for sale down here in the south texas valley a few years back. Thing had been parked for years and owner was in jail and he was selling it for 5k. I'll look for it in my fb messages to see if he still has it. Now one wanted it because even I thought it was a ghetto rigged expedition with lightning like interior and front bumper.

While I think this is an awesome idea as well, and it seems to make a lot of sense, Ford was not the pioneers of the fast pickup and fast SUV combo. In fact, for the years they are talking about with the Thunder, it was already about a decade beyond what I believe is the original combo, the GMC Syclone and Typhoon. Those were truly 2 ambitious vehicles, since they made them pretty powerful, and still tried to run AWD!! I say the AWD part was the most ambitious part of it because the technology at the time was not great for having a lot of power and fast torque through the AWD platform. I'd love for someone to make another stab at a combo like that, that isn't insanely expensive

I literally can’t believe you got ahold of John Coletti! He is absolutely a legend in modern muscle. Not only saved the mustang but made the mustang an absolute legend with the terminator. I own an 03 cobra and I can’t thank John enough for what he did at SVT.

Yeah, there was almost nothing shared between Terminators and run of the mill GTs. Almost the way Saleen would build their cars.

@@pgtmr2713 if you think about it realistically they share the main body shell, doors and fenders and beyond that the rest of the body and drive train is all terminator specific which is pretty crazy.

Ever heard of a little thing called the 2008 Ford F6X. Pretty much Australia's version of the thunder that actually happened. came with a 6 - speed auto (available in awd), a turbocharged Barra (turbo inline 6), sport suspension, Brembo brakes and a 0 - 60 time of 5.9 seconds. sadly only 251 F6X's were made.

I saw the prototype thunder back in the day. My dad owned a custom super cab lightning (1 of 10) featured in trucking magazine and fast ford's magazine. Built by full effect in California they also made the prototype for what became the Harley truck with a navigator front end on a F150

Wow. Being a die hard Bowtie fan, I’ve always respected any manufacturers “ Halo vehicles”. So nevertheless, I loved the SVT lineup. I even remember rinding in a Lighting! And I LOVED IT!!! And now seeing where the industry has shifted to mega horsepower SUV’s, it’s a shame that Ford didn’t pursue this avenue. They (I hate to say it), would’ve been the forefront of what is now a HUGE market! The high horsepower suv! Just goes to show you. When you have the top esalen of people at the top of ANY major auto manufacturer, that are NOT AT HEART CAR GUYS (OR WOMEN), great ideas get left to die... It’s a shame really. Would have love to see the counterpart to the Lighting!!! And that’s a diehard Chevy guy saying this!!!

They technically still make performance SUV's, explorer ST, even the Lincoln's come with ecoboosts now...while not super fast from the factory, a tune will really wake them up and even better upgraded turbos...theres explorer ST's with upgraded turbos slapping hellcats now

my thoughts exactly. Putting Lighting as the "first super truck" was a bit sad coming from Nolan. Scylcone and Typhoon both paved the way for Lighting. While some boutique other fast trucks existed prior to that, the GMC duo really put the idea into the mainstream.... Lightning just rode those coattails.

Or making a new one, and bringing it to ford to buy the designs to release it officially. If be happy with that. Ideally, they take the old blueprints, and just, build it like that old shape. Give it an EcoBoost engine, change NOTHING in the body shape, give it some comfy seats and a modern inside with an incredible bluetooth modified 80's analog display radio. Boom. You have yourself something truly magical.

The Navigator came with a DOHC 5.4. Much better starting point than the Single cam 5.4 in the expedition.

I remember seeing one of these Ford Thunder in Vegas, around the years 2000. It was the only one I ever seen. It used to be parked out in front of one of the old Ford dealerships (still around, just moved, Gaudin Ford) for a while. Very cool at the time. But now I know why I never seen another one.

I worked at a Ford dealership right out of high school. I drove an Expedition with a factory blower in it, it sounded like a Cobra and the shit was fast AF. It still had an Eddie Bauer badge on it. I haven't seen one since. This was circa 2000, BTW

I remember seeing one of the articles back in the day for the Thunder.. I've had a few SVT cars, SVT Focus, 95 Cobra although it wasn't badged SVT until i put one on, and i have driven a SVT contour and loved it. My favorite was the Focus, not super powerful, but light and nimble, but they're all drivers cars really.

in 2005, my mom got a brand new all black ford expedition limited with stock chrome rims. back then i used to think those were so rare because not once did i see another limited model of the expedition. years on once i got my license it became my first car. i used to think the v8 engine was so fast, but it was just a gas guzzler. still will always love the expedition and it there was a thunder model of todays version i would get it

My dad told me that my mom used to work at a nursing home caring for patients, and had a quadriplegic client that used to work and test drive for Ford. He was test driving a ford explorer that had ball bearings in the back for weight, crashed it, and the bearings crushed his spine. That was fun to learn about

It wasn't the Team so much as it was the bad design of the engine. Yea, I always wanted a SHO "Super High Output" Taurus, but, when I found out they use a plastic intake manifold and a plastic water pump, I said F**k Ford and went and bought the Trackhawk instead. Ford just closed the door on performance engineering and let Dodge/Chrysler/RAM take over that happy little corner of sports. When Ford puts out a GT with a V-6 Eco-boost engine that performs nearly like the old V-8, I say, Where have you been the last 30 years? Now My little corner of the universe has a AMG GT instead of a Ford GT in the garage. Why? Cause I LOVE V8 POWER. Not hating on the 6 but that technology has been around since the late 80's and no one other than GMC even put a boosted V6 in ANY vehicle EVER. (3 vehicle, GMC Typhoon, Cyclone and Buick Grand National) All of these cars are super performers, but, mechanics are not rocket scientists. Fully up to 50% of them can't even work on boosted engines cause they got no clue.

YESSSSS SVT TBIRD!!!! I had a 94 4.6 lowered, full exhaust, Diablo sport chip, head swap, fbo, b&m shift kit, 17x10 cobra r wheels, cobra brake swap, and the SuperCoupe bodykit She put down 307 whp and 389 whp trq. I loved that car. First car I almost cried when I sold it. Even had the custom plates that said SVTMTRL because she looked exactly like svt material. Didn't even knew they existed til a guy asked me if it was a svt bird at a car meet!!!

Plymouth Howler was a V8 powered prowler prototype from Plymouth I saw on a tv car show way back when. They drove it through a mountain road and talked about how perfect a cruiser it was. Power to weight, roadster, V8 growl, classic style. Nobody ever talks about it.
