Urdu is spoken barely by 7 percent of Pakistan's total population but the founding fathers preferred it as the national language over all the regional languages including Bangla, spoken and understood by over 50 percent of the total population in 1947. Even Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah didn't realise what kind of problems this could entail for the new-born state. What was the logic behind this controversial decision? Here we try to explain.
