Why Founding Fathers Preferred Urdu Over Bengali, Punjabi As Pakistan's National Language?

Urdu is spoken barely by 7 percent of Pakistan's total population but the founding fathers preferred it as the national language over all the regional languages including Bangla, spoken and understood by over 50 percent of the total population in 1947. Even Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah didn't realise what kind of problems this could entail for the new-born state. What was the logic behind this controversial decision? Here we try to explain.

🟩If Punjab 'breaks' by adopting Punjabi, then be it. No matter if Punjab divides into 2 or 3 states, they are still a part of Pakistan and one country overall. What's important is to please do something for your languages. 🟥I'm not from Punjab, my opinion might offend you. I'm so sorry for that. I just want you guys to adopt your language so education and knowledge of all kind reaches down even to the hard working Punjabi farmer in a remote village, in his own language!

I'm from Mansehra (KPK) and most people speak Hindko and Gojri language. It's painful to see my elders not teaching these rich languages to their children, causing rich geological, biological and medicinal vocabulary going extinct. Now I've started to transcribe rare words in my diary to preserve them and I'm optimistic to think that my struggle will at least change the preception of my people that their languages are not backward and rustic languages but have a rich culture and history and knowledge.

It's an irony that Qaide Aazam was Gujrati, Gandhi and Nehru were not Urdu speaking as well. Urdu became the national language because of Sir Sayyad Ahmed, who founded the Aligarh Muslim University and Muslim league. I want you to quote any Surah from The Holy Quran which states that only Urdu is the language of Indian Muslims and if any Punjabi speaks Punjabi, he becomes a Sikh immediately.

There is nothing in Quran as such, but since Urdu is close Arabic it was a good option for Pakistan. That's why many of Pakistanis can learn Arabic easily in Middle East and read it without even studying it as it is near to Urdu. No compulsion ! Urdu is an imposed language. The objective of a single national language was to inculcate what is called the ‘Pakistaniyat.’ How far it has succeeded can be seen the multiple occasions when the Pakistani TV anchors and geopolitical analysts keep lapsing into Punjabi to make a point more clearly. Also, one sees the dominant role of Punjab when no one lapses into Sindhi, Pashtu, or Baluchi.

It was the very political blunder that led to the division of the country in 1971. Founding fathers or father were human and prone to error. Whatever the reasons were but it was certainly not a prudent decision to impose a minority language spoken by Indian Immigrants over the overwhelming majority of the newly created state. It was and is against all international standards and natural laws and even a sort of cultural imperialism to let a minority language is promoted at the cost of local languages. The sooner the indigenous languages such as Punjabi, Pashto, Sindhi and Seraiki are declared the official language the better.

@@ovaismohiuddin5753 Sorry Sir Your logic is only appreciated in Pakistan. If we buy your logic then all those African countries where French and English is understand more than their own mother tongue should adopt English and French as their official languages. Even the Far East countries such as Korea, Vietnam, Laos, Mongolia etc should also forget their own mother tongues and declared Chinese as their official languages because the mandarin Chinese is understood by the majority in those country. Secondly how come you assume that Urdu is the only language which is understood by majority of the people in Pakistan? Majority of Pashtun even today unable to understand and speak Urdu despite that fact the Govt spends billion of rupees on its promotion and patronage. Is it not our back luck that our own indigenous languages are ignored at the expense of promoting a foreign language Urdu. Did we stubbornly refused to appreciate the fact that we have gone through a trauma of splitting of this country because we heard to the logic of people like you. @@mohammadayubkhan1921 You can have your opinion and i respect that, but sorry according to me your logic is flawed , we have to accept one language as a national language and it is very necceessary other wise every single person will force you to answer in thier language , if there is no national language then a Saraiki person will force you to answer in Saraiki even if you are a punjabi , not the other way around , so my question is , do you have a solution to this problem if we just cancel URDU as a national language ? no sir you do not have . so that is why Urdu has to be the national langauge , as a Punjabi i will never accept Pashto or Saraiki as a national language rather than Urdu and if we say we do not have any national language in Pakistan then i want you to talk to me in Punjabi not in Pashto , Saraiki or Sindhi , are you ready to accept that? that is why Urdu was the best option . by the way nobody forces you to talk in Urdu or watch urdu daramas or films you have your own culturel channels and music , whtach them , when you are in you city you talk in your language but of course if you go in other cities where you languaguge is not understood obviously you have to speak Urdu . It is not only you a lot of people do not like Urdu as National language and no bodycares specially the young generations , my children do not want to speak Punjabi they answer me eveything in Urdu even no body forces them to speak Urdu they select Urdu themselves and for me it is OK i never force my Langugage on my kids if they want to speak Urdu it is fine with me . Hello Sir, We are not supposed to reinvent the wheel. We have around 200 countries in the world and majority of these have their own national languages. There are certain well established norms and rules which these countries have followed. First rule which language is spoken by the majority is always picked as the official language of that country. In France there are many people who speak Italian or Spanish but French is dominant thus French is the official language. So is the case of German Language in Germany, Turkish in Turkey, and Persian in Iran etc. We like or not but Punjabi is the mother tongue of majority of people in Pakistan. According to the 2017 census it is 38.4% of people who speak Punjabi. In Switzerland land they have three official languages, German (62%) French (22%) and Italian (8%). Remaining are smaller local languages or dialects. Now if we need to communicate between various communities, we can adopt English which will also us to communicate to the global audiences. Lastly the Pakistani Government was created by the british for their own strategic purpose. Those who fled India came to Pakistan and started ruling us in the name of Islamic brotherhood. They brought their own culture and language and they imposed it upon us. I have a complain about Punjabi politicians tacit approval for such a cultural subjugation. They (Punjabi) also do not care about their own identity but Pashtun and Baloch are very sensitive to the identity question. You also suggested to stop watching the TV (Urdu) drama. I never watch tv but that does not solve the problem. The state of Pakistan always discouraged the local languages and cultures and never invested a penny on its promotion. For you information our provincial assembly passed a bill and made Pashtu as a compulsory subject till the FA-FSc level but nothing happened so far. Just because those who come to power (in the province or federal level) are always vetted by the intelligence agencies and if anyone found sympathetic to the culture identity are never cleared for any state position. The tale is long but let me tell you that Pashtun are living the lives of economic and cultural slaves in this country. If the present trend was not changed, God Forbid we will be faced with even serious consequences than what happened in 1971. @@ovaismohiuddin5753

Very well said. But I guess at provincial level they can make Sindhi, Punjabi, Pusto and Balochi as official language. But the problem is to qualify for provincial official language the language must fulfil both the criteria of speaking and writing and by far only sindhi qualifies that this is the reason sindhi is taught in every school in Sindh from 3rd grade. But Balochi, Pushto and Punjabi lack scripts as they are either written in Urdu or Persian so what is the difference not recognising Urdu as their provincial official language???
