I'm a retired LEO, back around '94 my agency issued us Glock 17's and I hated them. I was previously carrying a Beretta 92 and was very attached to it for its reliability and accuracy. A few months into carrying a G-17 I chased a perp on foot who was known to be armed so my G-17 was in my hand. I tripped over a tree root and fell, submerging the gun to the sandy dirt of south FL where I worked. Within a few more minutes (and our K-9) we got our perp in custody and off to jail.. The following day I went to the range with the G-17 still caked in the sandy dirt from the night before. I mag-dumped the entire mag and the G-17 cycled every round in it and slidelocked on the last round. Thats when I started changing my mind on Glock pistols. I carried a number of them thru the years of my 30+ year career. Still own many of them and currently carry a G43X as my EDC.

As a gun shop owner, the most consistent firearm we sell to "civilians" and duty oriented professionals is Glock. They sell themselves. Even with guns that have demonstrably better mechanics, the years of Glock marketing, reliability, and aftermarket support make them the #1 seller across the board. People simply feel comfortable with a Glock purchase even if it's not the "best" gun in that price range.

Carried 1911's for a few years and never had any interest in Glocks. I wanted something to knock around in my Jeep that could get beat up and not care, so I picked up a police trade in G22.4 for $300. I swapped all the necessary parts to convert to 9mm and fell in love with it. Picked up a G19.3 and got rid of all but two 1911s and gave them to my step-dad. I went thru all the other plastic guns, except for FN as their triggers were all so much worse than my Glocks. I carried various Glocks while I worked through the other guns and just found I enjoyed the Glocks more. I have ton of magazines, spare parts and could build a full Glock based on what's available from gun shops around my town. You can build an open gun, leave it stock or something in between, and any way they're just solid, great guns.

Hard to beat, I would add very easy to fix and keep inexpensive spare parts on hand. No finicky roll pins to deal with no delicate little springs that have to fit just right. I worked on an agency training team for eleven years the issue guns were model 22 and 23 Glocks. The 40s took a beating all I ever saw or needed to repair/replace in that time were recoil spring assemblies and a few less than 10 chipped extractors. Later I did the same for two police academies, they ran all model 19s and all I ever had to fix in over 10 years were a few less than 5 trigger springs. These were training guns for the cadets with tens of thousands of 9mm ball through them. Lots of guns shoot better, look better, point better, feel better. But when I put down my ego, and all the guns I really like better, and truly believe I gotta have something that works right now no matter what its a Glock. Many times I wish that were not true but it is. Like these guys allude if you were dropped in the middle of nowhere right now what pistol do you think you could get and keep running

Eli Dicken used a G19 with plastic sights to make 8 hits out of 10 shots fired starting from 40 yds in 15 seconds in the food court active shooter in a mall in Indiana abt 2 hrs ago. I was debating on 43x or an sig 365, then decide to rent the G26 and to my surprise I shot it better than the others named. I opted for a the Gen 5 and added the Pearce Pinky extension which change the look significantly to me. So the G26 pretty much went from one I never wanted to the one I now prefer as my edc, go figure. My other glocks rarely come out of the safe if I’m not taking them to the range 🤷🏻‍♂️

Smith & Wesson revolvers are essentially the exact same design they were in 1898. I think in our current day and age we are so spoiled for options that we think companies need to give us new and exciting options constantly. That's not to say the options are bad. We have a lot of awesome new guns out there today; it's a far cry from the days when everyone in the US was basically carrying a Smith, a Colt, or a cheap knockoff of one of the above. But Glock doesn't owe us innovation. If they need to innovate to stay relevant, they either will do so, or will fade into obscurity. But I wouldn't be surprised if "the" handgun is a Glock for at least as long as "the" revolver has been a double-action S&W, whether they change much of anything or not.

I won a Glock 17 at an NRA dinner event sometime in the early 2000’s and have been carrying a Glock 19 ever since. I run trijicon HD orange and the rest is absolutely stock. I’m guessing both the 17 and 19 have at least 8-10 thousand rounds each the only failures I’ve had was when I bought a Dillon Square deal and started reloading and made the mistake of loading a batch of weaker target rounds that just didn’t get it done. Other than that neither one has ever failed to go bang. Point of fact , both pistols are still running the original guide rods.
