Hey Scotty, I have a newish Chevy Sonic and my wife has put a decent amount of miles on it so far. We didn't pay much for it because we traded in and it had some dents the previous owner made which we got out with boiling water. We got the car with only 16000 miles, it hasn't been a long time of course but we have yet to have a problem. Keep up the great videos also gm aren't the only cheap cars lol

You can ✂ your mileage in half driving aggessively. I remember I used to work with a guy who drove like a maniac and got about 100 miles a tank in the city with a Pontiac Grand Am 4cyl. Automatic. When he started driving 30mph city instead of 50mph he got about 250 miles per tank. So he slowed down after just to save 💰. And the car broke down a lot less too.

I had a 2004 Alero that began life as a rental car and went on forever and ever. I wasn't even that good about maintaining it. The only problem I had with it was coil packs about every 30k or so. So for me the Alero was a really good car, especially for the price. It was noisy and the body panels never fit together correctly, but the interior was solid and comfortable and while the drivetrain wasn't inspiring, it never had any serious problems. Ended up driving it for 5.5 years and put 40k miles per year on it. Not easy miles, either. Lots of city driving.

I had a 2005 Malibu Classic. My biggest issues with that car were: -The anti theft system. My God I hated that the most. Left me stranded so many times. -It began losing quite a bit of oil. No one could figure out where it was going. It had no signs of burning any oil either. Different shops told me different things. -Leaking Rack/Pinion -Transmission problems. -The brakes. The calipers would creak whenever I put my foot down. I'd need to have the slider pins regreased. I believe this caused my rotors to warp prematurely. I'm not aggressive on the brakes at all. -I had to get new brake lines after the old ones were rusted and leaking, but this was because the car was 13 years old at the time, and I live in Ohio. Road salt in the winter will rust anything. It's terrifying driving on the highway and your brake like on the dash turns on. It served its main purpose. To get me through college. I now own a 2018 Mazda. Love it. My brother is using the old Malibu for the time being and is only dealing with the oil issue and the leaking rack/pinion. At least she's still kicking...for now. A side of me wants to try to get everything fixed on it when he gives the car back, but it's really not worth it at this point.

The truth of it - in the late 80's Ford started outsourcing most of their car parts but they kept the engine and transmission. The deal was that the parts supplier was totally responsible for any defective part. So, You have a company wanting to make, say, windshield motors but with the Ford name on them. If the motor went bad, the parts source had to pay for the replacement. Saved Ford a ton of money. General Motors went so far as to establish many, many parts builders run by GM. Their brake division was especially heinous as the unions completely controlled the brake making business, wheels, drums, shoes, pads. The poorly run brake division was partly to blame for the GM large loss of revenue.

The cars for the 50, 60 and 70 didn't last that long unless you were super aggressive on maintenance. Most of them would wear out at 50K to 75K. Most of that was due to lack of maintenance. @@lmezy25 I've not heard of this problem specifically to the Chevy Cruze . I also went to Auto Mechanic School and do some repair work on the side. The heat exchanger that warms the interior of the car is a closed system, if you have some kind of leak you would notice moisture inside your windows and smell and taste antifreeze in the air, I don't think this is your problem. You have some kind of leak that is burning off on the exhaust or block of the motor, they are being pulled in from the outside through your ventilation system through the heat exchanger is causing this burnt smell , but you probably already know that. First thing I would do is test the antifreeze to be sure it is at the proper mix and not overfilled , if it's improperly mixed antifreeze and water can boil out the Overflow and while driving blow on the hot components of the motor. But you're a pretty smart person and you probably eliminated the obvious possibilities , and still haven't found the problem. Next I would try a UV dye in the coolant be sure to follow the instructions , I suspect a very small head gasket leak, even though there are low miles on your car ,too many people like to drive their cars hard and not properly cool down and take care of they're expensive investment. You've obviously had some kind of leak and I've had to top off your coolant and if the mixture is improperly mixed it could create hotspots in the block of the motor causing a head gasket leak. You didn't describe anything from your details about overheating problem, I can only speculate with as much information you have given me .

My dad bought an 04 Impala that was loaded. It was a comfortable piece of crap. He had to sell it for beans when the plastic head-gasket went bad and leaked coolant into the combustion chambers and ate the engine up. Then he bought a rebuilt 2008 Malibu (the old ugly rental style). He paid 8k with like 17k miles because it was a rebuilt that an insurance company bought back from the original driver after a wreck. That car lasted him quite a bit longer and gave him very few issues until it had surpassed 150k miles. It was a much better vehicle, and that 3.5 would flat scoot. So I guess it just depends sometimes. Some of their vehicles aren't bad, and others, not so great.

Its a hit or a miss. I had a fully loaded 04 Impala and it was the most unreliable car I've ever owned. And I've owned nearly 20 cars so far in my life. And Dex Cool isn't bad, it just needs to be changed at 10 years or 150k. And never should be mixed with green coolant. Most people ignore both of those rules though. Of all the issues, I've had with my Impala, Dex Cool luckily wasn't one of them.

Ive had alot of gm cars. Its definitely been a mixed bag. 2 3rd gen camaros, 1 lt1 4th gen, 1 ls1 4th gen. 1995 lt1 corvette. 2009 cobalt ss sedan. 1993 Eldorado with the 4.9 that i still have, which i gave to my father and just inherited back. My 1999 ls1 camaro 6 speed was a very solid car. Just sold it a month ago with 67k miles. No problems at all. The 1996 camaro i had ran good, but the interior was very horrible. Had 138k when i sold it, original clutch. Just regular maintenance. My 95 vette was also a really good car. It rode smooth like a Cadillac for some reason i guess they were marketing those cars to the boomers. But the lt1 was bulletproof. Just some interior rattles that were annoying. My 2009 cobalt was a rocket. Only problem was that i felt unsafe in it due to the steering issues those cars are plagued with. And theres really no fix for it. Clunky steering racks and columns and shafts. Stay away from cobalts. Now my 1993 Eldorado with the 4.9 that im currently daily driving since i just sold my cobalt and camaro, is a tank. I dont see this car stopping any time soon. The interior is actually put together very well. Every surface is soft. Its very comfortable and is also pretty good in the snow due to that heavy v8 over the front wheels. I honestly think that GM got really bad around 2005 and started making real trash. I wouldnt even buy a c6 vette due to this reason. Compared to a c5, the build quality on the c6 is horrendous. You get a cobalt steering wheel, which is a total deal breaker for me. I am going to look at a 2000 buick regal gs with 53k on it later today. Guy says its the cleanest in the country. I try to look at other car brands but idk. Gm just makes some cool cars that i like. Ive never had a catastrophic failure with any of mine. So my advice is stay away from gm after 2004.

As for thousands of an inch tolerance, I think that is extreme. Maybe being withing a few hundredths is still ok on a McPherson strut car. I did front end work on a Lexus once and did a manual alignment in my front yard. The person doing the raeal alignment commented positively on how close I got to the pec. Just wanted to get it close enough to drive to the alignment center. They could do the rest.

I've done several alignments in my driveway with a tape measure. Then I go to a shop that offers free alignment checks. Always spot on! That's for toe AND camber.

If you're in Michigan, look at Steve Lehto; he has a youtube channel. Regardless of where you live, if you don't need a truck for utility, maybe this is a double blessing; you could buy a cheap used Corolla or Matrix from 1999-2008, or some 2001-2011 Camry (except for 2007); they all get pretty good gas mileage.

Each brand makes good ones and bad ones, to just say they are all junk is just plain wrong. Gm made bad vehicles after 2000? do you know how many early 2000's LS engines are out there with 300 000+ miles? You know how many early 2000's Buicks are out there with 3800 series engines with 300 000+ miles? Toyota made a lot of crap too remember the Echo, Yaris and Tercel? Do you know how many Prius come into the shop with problems like no headlights, overheating, melted fuses etc...

Sorry dude, all of those Echos, Yaris and Tercels are still on the road. And Toyota, unlike GM, did not steal the US treasury blind. And when was the last Toyota customer deliberately killed with a faulty ignition switch.

@@danielhoover1080 I haven't seen a Tercel on the road for 20 years, Scotty made a Video about how bad they were. The Echo was complete crap they didn't even come with power steering or abs on the base model, everything in the interior is hard plastic junk, they eat front wheel bearings and exhaust donuts crank sensors go out early and timing chains stretch prematurely master cylinder and brake booster is trash evap codes at 50 000 miles. I see the odd Yaris on the road but they are plagued with excessive oil consumption, Headlight failure they eat rear wheel bearings and engine mounts transmissions are junk and clear coats peel.

@@danielhoover1080 you do realize all three (GM, Ford, Chrysler) took money from the Government? Gm was the last to get away from unions and was going bankrupt because of it. I've own a 2004 and a 2006 Chevy Trailblazer. The 06 has 185,000 miles on it now. Still running strong. I owned a 1999 Ford ZX2 Escort brand new back in the day and had to replace the manual trans at 36,500 miles right after the warranty was up and again at 72,000. I traded it at 78,000 because the AC went out. I've had good luck with GM products not with Fords.
