Explore why zero-carbon technologies are vulnerable to the valley of death in product development and how we can change it.
--
All new products must pass through the "valley of death" before they reach the market. Many never make it out, and sometimes that’s ok- if they don’t work, don’t fill a need, or for any number of reasons. One of the fields where this problem is most pressing is zero-carbon technologies. Why is it vulnerable to this trap, and can we change it? Explore how to break the cycle of the funding gap.

This is a very important topic to discuss. The biggest issue with change is that people generally don't want it. It's scary and that's why important and life-changing innovations and ideas never make it to the public. But change, in many cases, is important and for the better.

Actually, I think it's because of the worry of major fossil fuel industries completely decimating the feasibility of green energy. This is especially the case in America where these companies have enormous sway over government policy. Heck, they often undercut their prices to persuade American, who are often struggling, to adopt green energy equipment on a public scale

1:55 - That is a LOT to overcome. Sometimes such long odds, are indicative that the idea does indeed belong in the Valley of Death. As far as a greener planet goes, I can give you that in two words; Nuclear Energy. We NEED to go Nuclear if we want to go green. The technology has seriously evolved, most of what was waste is now reusable, and the reactors are much much safer. Nuclear energy has a bad rep because of its past, but a lot has changed and it is our future if we want our future to be green. Renewables cannot even compare, and Zero Carbon doesn’t exist yet. We are much better off investing the money into Nuclear Energy instead. We will get faster and better results.

It's not just the costs that scare investors away, though that is a major issue as to why sustainable technology isn't getting pushed, it's the problem that many investors already have ties to the fossil fuel industry, and don't see a reason to change. It's a more complex issue, but if governments ever did what we wanted in the best interest for the future, then such innovations would be possible. Still a great animation once again by TED-Ed.

This reminds me so much of a basic economic concept called _externalities_. The most accurate definition of a externality is “the _uncompensated_ impact of one person’s _actions_ on the _well-being_ of a bystander.” An externality can be negative or positive, such as talking on the phone while driving which makes roads less safe for others or education which benefits those who are not directly involved in education because it increases the general intelligence of everyone around them. The problem with externalities is that markets ignores the social costs or social benefits of an action because humans follow their _own self-interest_ and _not_ the _interest of society_ as a whole. They can be fixed by government policy which “internalizes” the externality. This can be done with a per unit _tax_ for a negative externality (taking away money for every unit produced) or a per-unit _subsidy_ for a positive externality (giving money for every unit produced). This incentivizes producers to make more or less of the unit, which moves the market outcome closer to the socially desired outcome.

Good ideas never see the light of day because bad ideas have the government in its back pocket. Texas is a good example of this. Despite being told about their power grid years ago, Texas continued to do things like they always have done because Texas government is dependent on big oil's money. In 2021, the Texas power grid failed and people froze to death.
