Since Groundhog day is a completely foreign concept in Italy, the title was changed to "Ricomincio da capo". However my family always calls it "il giorno della marmotta", since the time loop trope is so overdone that the most memorable thing to us is this strange american celebration around groundhogs

This isn’t the only movie that has denied an explanation, however, what it does do, (and what others like it have done,) is give a reason for why it all ends, which is that he learns the lesson that the script calls for. When he changes his ways and finds his happy ending, the curse is suddenly lifted. This gives us the idea, that God or the universe or something bigger, has chosen to do this. We don’t have to know what, exactly, but it’s definitely not just random. Someone or something wanted this to happen. If this was a movie such as “Like Mike” what with him getting electrocuted while holding Michael Jordan’s shoes, we would just accept it as silly weirdness, good enough for Hollywood magic, and move on. The rest of the movie is just people reacting to life. By having no explanation, but the curse still lifts the second the character is changed, we get the feeling that the reason the character went through this, is purely so that they can have their character arc and become a better person. Someone or something had to interfere. It’s basically Charles Dickens’ Christmas Carol, without ghosts.

Simple. Bill Murray's character is forced to relieve each day because he didn't appreciate the smaller things in life. He only beats the loop once he grows as a person and learns to appreciate what he has and help his fellow man. How it occurs, well my headcanon is that Puxatawni Phil is a guardian angel of sorts. He holds Murray's Character ala It's a Wonderful Life until the job is done, only the positive consequences stay at the end.

@James Kraatz Yeah. I mean this film is kinda of a reimagining of It's a Wonderful Life of sorts. Murray's character has to learn to appreciate life itself and once he does learn to make the most of it and not squander his gift and share it with the world only then does the cycle break. It only takes a few selfless acts to make a difference in people's lives.

I mean while it's probably not an in film explanation I always thought that like it was thematically that he goes to puxatony every year to report on groundhogs day yet he doesn't really know anyone there, he gets stuck in a time loop of that same day and it doesn't break out until he meets all these people etc.

It is significant that Bill Murray's character is the only one that realises (or perceives) that the same day is repeating. So what do the other characters do on the subsequent iterations of the day after they encounter him? Each time his reaction to these people is increasingly frustrated or angry. Do none of these other characters speak to each other and say "Well, that was rude of him, why did he do that?"

My explanation for why the loop is thus: Because the writers said so The Loop is a representation of the monotony of a closed-off life, and the hopelessness, helplessness, demoralization, and detachment that comes with it. Only by actually paying attention, engaging, and going out of his way to improve everything around him does it change. Not when he kills himself, not when he does edgy, NoN-cOnFoRmAtIvE things; when he sees, savors, and improves the things around him, as well as himself. Stop to smell the flowers you pass by every day. Draw those blinds you always have closed. The Loop is a mindset, and so is being free of it.

Starting the movie with the protagonist already mid-loop is a really intriguing idea, but for the payoff to work at all, especially in a comedy, the audience really needs to see the first time through. The movie Palm Springs found a great way to do both: you have two characters. One has been in the loop for a while at the start of the movie, and the other is starting it for the first time.

Leaving things unexplained not only allows people to develop their own meanings but it allows them to discuss it with other people. It allows people to collaborate and share their views on the film. And from a studio standpoint can allow more people to talk and learn about the film thereby getting more people to watch the film.

In every movie with Bill Murray, it feels like he's the same character in different wacky scenarios. I guess you could say that for any actor, but it feels prominent with him for some odd reason. And I love it. I haven't seen all of his movies, but he (usually) gives me the vibe his character already read the script for the movie and is just going through the motions of the plot in the most hilarious way possible. Think of Ghostbusters, Stripes, and uh, maybe Caddyshack... It's been a while since I saw that one... But in groundhog day, this is the first time I've seen the Bill Murray "Character" in a state of misery and uncertainty. I just think it's interesting.

I've heard so many stories about the making of a good movie that include "but the studio executives wanted to do this thing that would have ruined it, but the writers were able to win out." Other times in the story of bad movies there are references to how studio executives put a lot of crap in the script because that's what they figured audiences wanted to see. Has there ever been a case of studio executives forcing the creative team to change something and the movie becoming better because of it?

"Why does Buzz freeze around Andy if he thinks he's real?" I actually have a theory about that, From Buzz's perspective, he's on an alien planet & the toys freezing is some sort of local custom He may not know WHY they do this, but he figures these locals know this world better than he does, so he just goes along with it

there is this one scene that kind of niggles at me. It's that final day before the bachelor auction where Phil is playing the piano in the band and the piano teacher is there, and she specifically says that Phil is her student... Since the day resets, it would suggest he must have gone to get another lesson and I would surmise that at this stage he's become proficient enough that he wouldn't have had to, especially given that day he was doing countless 'errands' throughout town that made him the town darling. Actually it doesn't overly bother me, but maybe she could have explained it more because I'm left with the notion that on the final day when he manages to make pretty much everyone in town love him, he still let a young girl get booted out of a piano lesson so he could get a lesson.

If it makes you feel better, assume there's an unseen scene where Phil encounters the piano teacher, "reminds" her of how she gave him a lesson or two when he was younger and he wanted to show her how he'd improved, then sits in and helps with the lesson for the girl he originally got booted to make up for it. Kid gets her lesson, teacher thinks she really got Phil started (even if her memory is hazy about it) so she's happy to claim she taught him later, everyone wins. He's got time somewhere in his crazy schedule to spend half an hour that way.

I officially decided already that the loop was a test from the universe. He was a terrible person at the start of the movie, and didn't the loop end when he became a better person, and used knowledge of the day from the loop to save lives?

I love time loops. You get so much character development out of it. Some of the best time loops has been in Star Trek. There’s also this YA book called Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver. It’s a time loop. It’s amazing.
