Because of the massive influence that was the pandemic, I don't think a singular genre will be the defining instagram model like neo-soul was. I'm pretty sure since all these musicians who were itching to play live have shifted over to constantly releasing something on social media, we're going to hear more "rough edges" songs being worked on through stories. We're going to see massive, super complex guitar work from artists who've had nothing but free time to hone a composition and chronicle it. We may see an influx of up and comers who picked up guitar to pass the time locked away and jump start a movement of simple genre songs that catapult to hidden gem artists exploding out with polished works over a short period of time. In short, we're about to see a guitar renaissance

The worst part about guitar in social media is the fact that people get a wrong impression of what it takes to play guitar. They get spammed with 30 second videos of a guy playing complicated parts to the point where people get numb and unmotivated. Firstly they don't see how much practise goes into playing this stuff. Secondly people miss the context - I mean it's just a small part of a song - so they don't see how a song builds up and how a solo or certain part fits in. To conclude: I hate music on social media and would much rather prefer people to be inspired by songs / full records again.

My first memory is: "Canon Played by funtwo". I was so impressed by this kid.

I'm hopeful that the next wave will abandon overly-technical, virtuosic playing in favor of raw, unrehearsed, expressive music. Kind of how grunge was a response to the technical leanings of 80s rock.

The first I saw someone play the guitar on the internet was Canon Rock by bluekeys. It was around the time I started playing the guitar and almost made me quit because it was extremely hard. Good times.

Great stuff man - I agree. Its super exciting to see what the next gen is coming up with. Nothing is fully original to one person - we learn from each other and after it becomes part of our own repertoire we personalize it and it contributes to our unique sound. So exciting to see all these amazing shredders gravitating towards new sounds

It can be like any other Social Media site, at times the social aspect of it is can worst part. Things like new guitarists being trashed for not being good enough and gate keeping being turned up to 11 in every aspect or people trend chasing and going after anyone that isn't. So it can seem like at times that you are in a dysfunctional relationship with Insta rather then a dysfunctional girl friend. But it can lead to some good things too. Like showing up to play bass with a insta guitarists and them wanting to learn Primus. Because you have a fuzz and wah pedal for your bass.

You should listen to Toe, they have a gorgeous albums since the 2009, there's a lo of music from past years, some of them I didn't know that existed because they are not mainstream, I think that always is going to be in that way, but there's always someone that its going to listen if you have something valuable to add

I actually believe there are a ton of new age musicians in that “ math rock “ category. Like polyphia, thundercat , jd beck etc . You don’t hear any blues licks or the things we’re used to .

How do you feel that collaborations between multi instruments are progressing? Not just guitarists, but maybe a guitar player and vocalist, a guitar player and ukulele, a guitar player and tin whistle?

Look towards the progressive metal scene and the Jazz scene for an idea of what might be next. Tim from Polyphia is definitely inspired by Tosin Abasi from Animals As Leaders, but Tosin is too complicated for most mainstream outlets. Plini is a top contender for someone out of that space next to shine, Cory Wong has been getting a lot of attention as well. It’s hard to say but this melding of styles has been a beautiful thing to watch over the years

Literally watching instagram guitarists made me feel like a noob guitar player. Amazed and depressed with my own progress. But when I play my own stuff, I literally forget Instagram and get the vibe i wanna have while playing it.

I assume history will repeat itself in a way: the same way grunge came after the 80's maniacal (in a good way) shredding popularity, the next great thing might not be about virtuosity but it may be something completely opposite and novel. But who knows, we are all here enjoying the ride.

I guess the next best thing is someone's own voice, own compositions as a whole song, doesn't matter what genres they are but it relevants to the people's life and ecohes people's heart and soul, even your audience doesn't even need to know a thing or two about music. like Nirvana did in the 90's.

i remember when youtube was kinda the first "social media" to share videos.. i watched funtwo canon rock.. i was barely learning guitar.. lovely times.. nowadays its kinda anoying even though THERE IS talent around.. i dont know.. sometimes it just feels gringy

In my humble opinion it would be something simpler & why i say that is because as a successor to glam/thrash/speed metal/hardrock came grunge in the 90s which was rather simple then came alt rock in 2000s even simpler....maybe i dont know...

What's coming next for guitar, I don't know. But, you through some word soup out there: Midwestern Country Jazz. Dude, take it, and make an EP of that, cause I think that could sound actually pretty good :)

Honest question: Is there much of a link between Instagram guitar playing and playing with other guitar players in the real world? In my experience, the people I play with are not generally playing the things that are popular on Instagram - and I'd likely be fired if I did.

If the trend continues it could be either Jazz or Grunge. My opinion is that bands like Polyphia, Animals as leaders and the like are really jazzers. This will either lead to an acceptance of jazz as the new cool or a Grunge/Punk anti theory and technique trend will come around again. Looks like a cycle we see regularly in popular music since the 50's.

What I can comment is that I wish I could go back in time, take the internet with me, and have the resources which are available today to the more analog era in which I was growing up. It might have pushed my guitar playing a little more... or not ;-)

I’m surprised you didn’t mention how many takes a lot of these Instagram guitarists need to do before posting something. It also comes across as being phony and fake in a way. Then again the music industry kind of sucks as a whole now. It’s not really how it was in the 60s - 90s imo when bands would get noticed by going out and playing shows. They get noticed now by having a social media presence. I could be wrong and I probably am a little bit wrong about that but that’s at least what I see now.

Instagram on paper, for guitar players is great. However the good tutorial and honest jam videos are hidden in a jungle of mind numbing rubbish. Too many bot pages reposting random junk and those cringe videos of people who are too good to the point where its kind of boring. I need to have a human like understanding of what I am seeing and alot of instagram stuff is far from reality. Its that high consumption of junk that ruins it

The thing about the classic styles, is that you can go and jam with whoever you want, but to play "Math Rock" you need 40 pedals and 2 people that know how to improvise inside that framework without just playing a song inside it. Not even the guitar player from Polyphia is very flashy with no pedals, saw him on NAMM, and i was totally dissapointed how he couldnt play other song that isnt GOAT cuz no effects or sustain. Not taking away from them, but there's something that is just "passing" on this style, to me in 1 year it will be literally irrelevant for most of the community, and the guys who like it will stay on it, just like Metal. You can go to every guitar discord server and there will be a guy with gain on 11, noone cares about Metal, but is still being kept alive by its own community until you mature and see that playing fifths isnt very musical as it is fun. I'm actually kinda excited by your friends question "what's next" probably something inside Guthries bag, i've seen a lot of grow on interest from people to know about him, since theres a few videos of him from today and the one of him playing in a bar a few months ago blew the internet on how good he is. Great video, keep it up man.
