I think one of the biggest things about Harbin. Is the small shops everywhere. So many different venues of food. There’s quite a few shops that I actually started becoming friends with the people. I miss them terribly also. There’s a place I like to go exercise down at the Riverwalk. I guess I had six or seven friends I was becoming pretty close with. The one guy was a professional boxer. They wanted to give me free boxing lessons. I must’ve laughed for about a half an hour. This guy was big and his hands were baseball mitts. I told him I’m a little bit old for that kind of stuff. It may be another year before I can get back I don’t know. Once Harbin gets in your blood. You will never be the same. I actually tell people my home is in Harbin. Because it is. I have to thank you for this video also crazy man. I really appreciate this.

I've been to Harbin once during summer and will be going again in December/January (studying Mandarin). As far as Chinese cities are concerned I have only been to Harbin and Beijing. I felt that Harbin was a more "local" rather than "global" city, so I felt I got a better feeling for real life in China which I appreciated immensely. One of the other things I was pleasantly surprised about was that people seemed to place a higher value on life's simple pleasures - such as hanging out with friends in the park and less on superficial things like designer clothes. This is something I still try and remember even two years later. Definitely if I were to live in China I would much prefer to be in places like Harbin or Shenyang rather than Beijing or Shanghai.

If you ever see any western-looking foreigners, they are probably also the ethnic Russians with China citizenship who actually migrated to Heilongjiang province long time ago to escape the wars or persecution. Or they are the descendants of mixed Russian-Chinese parentage who are more likely to speak fluent mandarin than their grandparents or parents. During WW1 or 2, there were a sizeable portion of Jews who stayed there and in SHanghai but after the wars ended, they have either moved back to their own countries like Russia or migrated to the USA. These jews were mostly persecuted by Nazi Germany and so fled to Shanghai who is probably the only place that accepted them in large numbers. There's also the Kaifeng Jews whose ancestors came from ancient Persia through the silk route living in Henan but through centuries of mixing with the Han Chinese, they don't look any more different than the typical han Chinese you see. They are a very small community and not recognised on their own as one of the minorities, prob because the govt then didn't know how to categorise them.

I thought I read Qingdao would be the favorite city for most Germans. How does living in Harbin compare to other northeastern cities such as Qingdao, Dalian, or Shenyang? I'm American and have never visited any of these cities.
@saarland2china
@saarland2china 4 жыл бұрын
Well Qingdao is not really north-eastern anyomre. Its just eastern. Qingao has a lot of excellent german architecture and beer. I did a "Qingdao Tourguide" on my channel many many years ago, just look it up. Compared tomy videos today it is not very good though haha. Shenyang is very modern compared to Harbin, but Harbin has more attractions to offer. Dalian has the beautiful sea and is moder as well. Harbin is my favourite.

Indeed Harbin is a raletively relaxing city in China with so many tasty street food. Its quite afforable as well,which means not so much pressure for life. Thank you for what you mentioned the upsides of my hometown,but its really cold(be prepared to that). There are not many foreigners here,even when I took the English speaking test last month,I was wondering were there enough native speakers here,lol. Anyway,it involves a special side of China.

Firstly, really appreciate your informative and enthusiastic posts. I agree with your comment about the classic chinese spoken in harbin. Peers would always comment on my father Shakespearean speech. As a descendant of white russians, would be grateful if you could collate a post on its past residents. Most are elderly and their experiences and perspectives will fade with them. Keep up great work. My 'western family' visited last year and they loved the stone paths, the paintings in trees, the array of dogs and their colourful owners, the oldies who tech in the morning and of course the ice cream.

Thanks for reply..we hope to return in a few years when children are older to experience the ice festival. It doesn't snow in Oz so kids needs to be psyched into -30 degrees.
