The vid glosses over how the stick technology has advanced. Back in Gretzky's days the sticks were made out of stiff wood. You had to get that big windup to generate that kind of velocity on the puck. Nowadays the sticks are made of composite materials and easily flex so it's easier generating velocity on the puck while not sacrificing accuracy.

Please react to Alex Ovechkin "best goals and hits" its amazing. He is 70+ goals away from breaking Gretzky all time goal record and he will also end up #1 all time in "Hits". Once in a lifetime type of talent.

In my experience playing as a goalie, it is easier to know where a slap shot is going, as apposed to a wrist or snap shot. If a slap shot is coming in at 130 - 160 kph at close range (when the opposition is screening you), it can be tough to see and stop.

He mentions the stick development but doesn't really explain in any further detail. Modern composite sticks are exceptionally good at storing and releasing energy in the form of flex. Shooters nowadays opt for wrist or snap shots because the drop off in shot speed is very minimal when compared to a slap shot, and the ability to get a shot off quickly is much, much more valuable. The ideal shot nowadays gets off your stick blade before the goalie can recognize that you're shooting it, and combining that with the increased accuracy and similar shot speed makes for a much more effective shot than a big ol wind up clapper. It does still have its uses though. For example, one timers (specifically on the power play) where you're firing that puck off with as much power as you possibly can as soon as it reaches you, and defensemen firing shots through crowds of guys standing in front of the goal. Crazy things can happen when a d-man winds up and bounces it off of legs and sticks. The slap pass is about the only deceptive thing you can do with a full windup. It's exactly how it sounds. You wind up looking like you're going to shoot and send it to a teammate instead.

Black Hawks(/Jets) Legend Bobby Hull, Flames/Blues Legend Al MacInnis, Predators/Canadiens All-Star Shea Weber, and the greatest goal scorer the game has ever known, Washington Capitals Legend Alexander Ovechkin, have the greatest slap shots of all time.

He had a very powerful shot, not so much through technique, but rather raw power, but the quality of his shot wasn't too good... There are a bunch of guys who'd fall between the 4 I mentioned and Chara, such as Brett Hull, Pat LaFontaine, Al Iafrate, Steven Stamkos and others...

Even 20-25 years ago my hockey coach had us move away from the slapshot. A wood stick could generate 85% of the strength versus a slapshot. The wirst shot takes seconds to fire and it is way more accurate plus you can fake a pass or the direction. Watch Joe Sakic truly was acceptable with his wrist shot. One timer slapshots make sense since you can time the pass so much more strength. One timers aren't too bad to time. To shot it really well takes some good timing.

As some1 who played goalie in hockey on a AAA rep league team pretty much all my childhood.. I can say I HATED when some1 would blast a slap shot at me from close range, just pray it doesn't hit you in the face, collarbone, neck or jockstrap haha.. Even with all that padding those spots always hurt for some reason. Slapshot to the nuts literally had me laid out on the ice like I just got shot haha

The guys that are saying it has nothing to do with the speed of the game I don’t think actually play the game. The speed of the game is definitely a factor. Not saying slapshots can’t be effective, but players don’t have time to telegraph their shots. Stick technology is another one. The way graphite sticks flex today, players can get off a quick accurate snapshot or wristshot in less than half the time it takes for a slapshot, which is important because… goaltending technique has become a science. Which again, is why speed matters.

There is still nothing more scary for a goalie than the slapshot. It has very little with the speed of the game. taking a good slapshot is something that is learnt. Slapshots from the point are still one of the best weapons that a defenseman has

You should take a look at Tage Thompson (the guy in the face-off circle around 6:00), the guy is a freak but he's only come on in the last couple of years so he doesn't appear much in the most popular compilation videos.

In 2004 the trapezoid was introduced, & also the two line pass rule was taken out, both basically the same reason, to speed the game up. Both changes have been debated ever since on whether those changes should have been made, or if those changes should be reversed? Personally I think they should reverse those changes, in particular because I love the art of the slap shot. Do you think the league should bring back the old system in hopes of restoring the art of the slap shot? Or do you think the rules should be left alone, the way they are now, & let the game evolve the way it is going into the future?
