It’s not “only” black it’s historically black. Anyone regardless of race can attend these schools. These historically black colleges exist because of white supremacy that would not allow blacks to attend college. It’s in history books.

It's a shame that in the 21st century people's attention span is so short that they don't watch the video before commenting. For those tempted to up vote this, I will briefly summarise the problem so the truth can be known. After the Civil War, universities were set up in the South as part of reconstruction. These Land Grant institutions were to be PUBLIC UNIVERSITIES, not Private Universities. As segregation meant black students were not allowed to attend these universities, the Federal Government funded the creation of Land Grant Colleges for Black students. Under Federal Law these all Land Grant institutions would be entitled receive a Federal Grant AND a State grant matching the federal amount annually for their funding. Historically, the Southern States funded the White colleges every year but, the Black colleges were not. The problem was recognised 50 YEARS AGO, and NOTHING was done. The amount owed is nearly $500 MILLION at today's prices. That's why it is a problem. If you have read so far Thank You for reading this. Have a good day.

The whole reason these universities exist is because black people could not attend colleges because of racism so there was a such thing as “white universities”…Fun fact anybody regardless of race can attend a Historically black college… I find it horrifying that racism is still alive and well today…

There are lots of those in the US, and everywhere there are white people. Racism is after all a belief system designed to maintain the Status Quo. There has been progress, but after decades of deliberate underfunding, that these Historically Black Colleges are still needed in the South speaks volumes. Yes, there are getting money now but nobody wants to even consider paying the nearly $500 million outstanding, and those students are at a disadvantage. And that's why these Colleges are still needed. It's a Catch-22. Racism hasn't died in the USA, and when the trend in populism comes with essentialism and nationalism, racism isn't too far behind. Seneca said: "All Cruelty comes from Weakness." And what Racists fear is their own weakness against the Other who is, or who is becoming Strong. That's why State of Tennessee and others states utterly ignored Federal Law and deliberately handicapped the Black Colleges by not allocating them their due funding for over 50 years. It's sad, but there we are.

No need to wonder, They are called PWI’s (predominantly white institutions). And being one of the few token minorities amongst a sea of white people is absolutely horrifying.

African Americans are systematically discriminated against in nearly all parts of life, why can’t you just let them have this one thing?

"Historically Black College" does not refer to what students can be admitted... it refers to the history of the university. People of any race or ethnicity are allowed to attend these schools.

They are welcome to apply whenever they want. It's not a Blacks only university.

It's $255m total STEM funding and only. $85M was for HBCU's. Earmarking the funding to only be spent on STEM doesn't keep the university open.

HBCUs exist because Black folks were banned from white institutions. Even now folks would argue schools are more segregated now due to the backlash against school integration and a lot of black students find themselves bullied by racists, treated harsher by teachers, more likely to be arrested on school grounds, and more likely to be suspended or expelled. So no HBCUs aren't racist and I'd prefer more schools for Black students that center around Black American culture.

Most colleges in the US are "white" colleges. HBCUs are schools created during the time of segregation in America. The student demographics just never changed over time. The only difference is now anyone regardless of race can go to a "white" or "black" college.

There were Whites only universities. Harvard was the first US university, built in 1636. No Black students at the time. Black students were not allowed at White universities. So Blacks built their own Universities, because it's the only place they were allowed to go. In 1964, universities were no longer allowed to be white only or black only. So now they're called Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU).
