This is Otto Warmbier. An American college student and tourist whose trip to North Korea turned into an actual nightmare. In 2016, he was sentenced to 15 years of hard labor in a North Korean prison camp for a seemingly innocent crime that many believe... he didn't even commit. After his sentencing, all communication with the outside world was cut off.
00:00 The Otto Warmbier Tragedy
00:48 Returned home in a braindead condition
01:16 North Korea denied responsibility for Otto's death
02:59 Otto's background in commerce and passion for travel
04:09 The initial light-hearted atmosphere of the tour
06:15 Otto's confession may have been coerced by the North Korean government
09:58 Both Obama and Trump administrations worked to bring Otto home safely.
13:45 No definitive signs of torture or physical abuse found

I have to go to many of these countries for work and I am always very cautious. The first time I traveled to Moscow, I discovered my father’s cousin was still on their 💩 list. More than 50 years later, they’re still unhappy. Fortunately, they didn’t hold it against me, but I had to respond at passport control when they asked about him. Some people just can’t let things go.

If you can think of an off the wall place, other than North Korea, I have probably been there. I just paste a polite smile on my face and behave. Amusingly, I was representing my country at a weekend symposium in Central Asia and knowing the nation well, knew to supply our employees with bottles of water and juice, dried fruit and nuts, as well as crackers and cheese, because events were usually in grand marble building who’s air conditioning was no match for the temperature and would not offer any food or drink over the course of the day. I bumped into the Iranian Ambassador at his area and made small yak through the interpreter. He was an older man and clearly not doing well in the heat. I had on my American flag lapel pin and was wearing my Star of David necklace and without thinking, offered him cool water and food at our area. He looked shocked that I would offer him that courtesy, but my parents raised me better than that and, as he was polite to me, I owed him the same courtesy. He was so appreciative of the gesture (and the water) that he presented me the next day with a beautiful box of Iranian delicacies. Would I go to Iran? Absolutely not, but people are capable of behaving well when the want to, and I am tired of people using culture as an excuse for bad behavior. Civility is never out of style or uncalled for.

If we take into account his travels and the countries he visited, it is obvious that Otto is a kind of wannabe communist, but one who does not want to give up all the benefits of capitalism and democracy. Maybe he should have stopped researching communism after Cuba and Hong Kong, but apparently that wasn't enough, so he had to go to North Korea, and in the end he realized that he had gone too far. There are a lot of people like him in the West, an easy life and a lot of sponsors for such a life, but after all these excessive comforts in the end, tragedies like this happen.

A lot of people say he shouldn’t have gone to NK, and surely that’s true…but that doesn’t mean he deserved any of this. You can’t just shrug and say “that’s what you get”… He suffered more in his short life than most of us could ever imagine, and his family will never have justice. They have only their sorrow. This. "Don't go to North Korea" is missing the whole point. What about the people who are forced to live in NK regardless? The foundation of law is supposed to be based upon fairness, upon asking "What if I were the strong one, or what if I were the weak one instead?" We call what they did Human Rights Violations but if we just sit on our butts and say "Sucks for them, don't go there", then it remains just another Tuesday for the ppl in NK. NK should be ashamed of what they did to another country's young citizen but in their primitive war-obsessed culture they probably see it as "Showing how tough they are", just as apes kill the young of other apes to try and dominate. Sometimes demonstrating humanity is being better than the beastly, but sometimes you have to step up and put mad rabid dogs down too...

Removing a sign/poster seems so harmless and the punishment certainly did not fit the crime. I can't imagine the torture he endured which resulted in permanent brain damage and death. They had no mercy for this young man. It's sad that he had to be the example for anyone deciding to visit NK who might think that taking a sign is a minor thing. I followed this case very closely from the beginning and here's what I think really happened: Otto did try to steal the flag and got caught. Suggestions of torturing him to death are stupid. He was now a very valuable prisoner so NK would have treated him well enough. As you can see Otto was mentally losing it. Instead of waiting for the US to bail him out, he tried to kill himself, probably by hanging, but failed. The lack of oxygen caused the brain damage and this also explains his parents' refusal to allow an autopsy. They didn't want the world to know what really happened.
@firenze5555
@firenze5555 10 күн бұрын
I agree the failed suicide is a possibility. I also think that it is possible that because Otto was so emotionally distraught, they heavily sedated him and accidentally gave him an overdose which starved his brain of oxygen. Really sad. They never should have gone to North Korea.

I cant watch this because its painful seeing him beg for his life, but I read somewhere that what really happened is this: The night prior, Otto got into an argument with some important North Korean citizen. He talked back to this guy. Since its not legal to arrest someone for talking back, they set him up and arranged for someone to pretend to be him attempting to steal a poster. That gave them the authority to arrest him. Imagine how tiny and fragile their egoes are over there to want to kill someone because they talked back. 😬

I read someone's comment on another video. I guess the night prior to being arrested, Otto got into an argument with some important North Korean person. Basically he talked back to a higher up. They couldn't arrest him for talking back so they had someone pretend to steal a poster so they could blame it on Otto. Then I'm assuming once he was arrested he was tortured into confessing. As a nurse who has cared for people in a vegetative state like poor Otto I am very curious as to how his brain was damaged so profoundly, especially if the damage was to the entire brain but bilateral and not the result of being beaten around the head. I don't know what those soldiers did to him, but I am terribly sorry for Otto and his family. Apparently Otto didn't have any pressure sores on his body when he arrived back into the states which is really extraordinary as it is easy for those individuals who cannot move themselves to end up with significant pressure sores if the care is inadequate. I find it odd that he was clearly "cared for" within the North Korean hospital he was a patient in for almost his entire time in NK but he was also clearly tortured and his brain starved of oxygen as evidenced by the contractures of his hands and feet which are signs of significant brain injury. One of my sons has a close friend who went to NK a couple of years before Otto did and I was so shocked that he had done something SO stupid, but he claimed that he enjoyed himself and the people were friendly! I noticed some posters with NK'n propaganda on his wall, and I automatically remembered Otto supposedly taking the poster off the wall and what that act, IF he did it at all, resulted in To any young person thinking of visiting NK DON'T, there's nothing there that you need to worry yourself about. Watch some of the extensive number of documentaries on KZfaq, and you'll realise that Im right. There's a crazy man leading the country, horrific murders of the NK peasant class, and mass starvation. Especially "entitled" Americans who think they rule the world and they are immune and can ignore the laws of other countries I have lived and worked in several sketchy places in the world,for extended periods of time, always being very careful to be highly respectful of local culture, laws, and most importantly how things really are. When Americans show up as tourists there are often incidents. The typical "ugly American" is alive and well. Incidentally I would ever ever ever go to several countries for any reason and DPRK is at the top of that list.

I don't care how old a child is, no parent should have to bury one. I hope they are getting the help and strength they need to keep healing. After even 8 years, they probably still feel like it was yesterday that they woke up to this nightmare. The one small, tiny consolation in this tragedy is that he was here in the states when he perished and not over there. I'm not being disrespectful or anything other than how I know if under the same circumstances, I'd want the decision on when they left us, and I'd want them in my arms. My heart goes out to them that they didn't get a chance to talk to each other. 😢🙏

No one should have a feeding tube inserted in their nose except in an emergency until one could be surgically placed in the stomach. Certainly not 15-17 months. The tube itself can erode the nasal tissue but worse, they become dislodged and the liquid feeding is pumped right into the lung. If he didn’t have waterboarding before he did then. That may explain some of the brain damage. There were also signs that he had a major heart attack. The heart muscle would be unable to pump the blood volume to the rest of the body and it would back up out the pulmonary artery and into the lung. Forced feeding through a tube would only increase the blood volume. So if he didn’t drown in misplaced tube feeding he may have gone into congestive heart failure and drown in his own fluids. It just makes me sick to think of what that poor young man went through along with his parents
