Spoiler warning in case you haven't seen the film yet!
I didn’t plan on making a video on Indiana Jones 5, but after seeing it in theaters I had to share my thoughts. As I mention towards the end of the video, there are a lot of issues with the film, but the most prominent and noticeable one lies with the character of Helena Shaw. This video is a bit more of a rant than a video essay, but don't worry, I'm working on a big project that will be out eventually. In the meantime, leave a comment and tell me if you agree or disagree with my thoughts on Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.

At 1:38 you said “The film picks up with a younger Indiana Jones after the events of the fourth movie.” I think you meant the 3rd one because the opening for Dial of Destiny takes place in 1944 during the fall of the Nazi empire and film 4 is set in 1957.

In the Open Source world a decade ago there was a severe lack of female participation. Their idea was that the problem is *NOT* that women don't like developing, but there are just too many males doing it. Another solution was that making pink artwork for websites, bringing coffee, cleaning up the workspace and answering emails should also be considered "development". Of course, male developers producing code were considered "evil". That is how twisted the woke mind works. Note that the vast majority of the about 25,000 Open Source projects were one or two person projects, over 95% male. I've been working for years with persons I've never seen or spoken to. We don't need to, we email about code, that's all. So, the arguments that females can't enter a project because of abuse is futile - you can hide behind a handle. There are just not that many females interested in coding. But blame the men, sure.

Nah, they wanted their cake and to eat it as well. So they have her "turn for the good" in the end and suddenly she's no longer interested in commercial gain or self-interest. Even though the plot gives her very little motivation to do so (she suddenly feels bad about how she treated Indy?). Lazy writing for political points. It's the same old thing, the promotion of one group by the denigration and marginalization of another. Bad if you are on one side of the spectrum, heroic if on the other.

She's a flat out sociopath. She views other people as nothing more than tools for her personal gain. The old boyfriend used to get a ring and black market connections. Using the hispanic version of short round as her gopher -- who was so forgettable as a character that I genuinely cannot remember his name and I saw the film 3 days ago. But most egregiously using Indy. For his connections. For his status (getting first half of the dial). For comedic relief, putting him down left and right to make herself feel better like she's some middle school bully. She shows no regard for human life, concerning herself only with whether or not someone will be useful to her and not considering them as free thinking humans worthy of respect. Some role model.

Just watched this awful movie. agree. hmm hmm. when >> boat scene - indy says " my old friend just got killed" - she slightly "symphathizes" and then smiled after 2 seconds no remorse at all. there are also multiple shit tons of nonsense going on this movie. the scene where she runs and locks up indy on the university knowingly that he could be killed (guys are carrying a gun and even killed 2 people what is this? ofc we know that indy has a protagonist armor but don't insult us like that like a kid or better yet make it more realistically (where he escapes flawlessly, and then at the ending she decides the fate of indy? GTFO , to be honest all of the major emotional parts where the story is going, im really rooting for the opposite. , Indy staying with archaemedes, - at least he decides it for himself. THE MAN , THE LEGEND.(will be more dramatic IMO - a stretch though). the kid fly a plane through a storm? then knows how to navigate it (SMH), the kid winning on a huge man, the villains teleports to where the protagonists are. how did they get home? there are no runways on the ending just pure unbalance pavement full of rocks and the terrain is obviously on the seaside part! SMH i regret watching this trash.

BTW I rewrote Irina Spalko from KOTCS into being a Russian mobster interested in selling the Crystal Skull on the black market for money. Same with Rene Belloq, Walter Donovan and Elsa Schneider, only I rewrote Simon Katanga as Belloq’s employer instead of the Nazis. Monkey Man takes Arnold Toht’s place in my version of that movie. I also rewrote Walter Donovan and Elsa Schneider to where Lucky Luciano is their employer. So yeah.

It may look like a missed opportunity to you, but in practical terms they were already far along in another direction.

Just imagine for a second: Shia returning as Indy's son with Harrison filling up the role as an older Indy in the style of Sean Connery in the last crusade with some adjustments and twists. And the ending would be Indy gifting his fedora to his son, symbolically passing down the torch, as he peacefully retires. I would have loved to see that! But of course that wouldn't have satisfied the fictional "modern audience" Disney is catering to...

To create a bad movie character you need them to be as flawless as possible. Helena Shaw and the little kid never ever makes any kind of mistake, you know they will never get hurt in any possible case so that makes them not human. Indy, just like many other movie heroes, it's a just a "person", in a way, he resembles a hero in a person, but he's not flawless. Just by being afraid of snakes, to get captured many times, to get punched by his enemies who can overpower him, all things that makes him feel and be vulnerable. Jesus Christ, Helena Shaw it's like watching Hannibal Lecter (in a bad review) as emotionless and soul less as the killer. She knows everythings about anything, every subject you can Imagine, she can fight like hell, be smart like Einstein, she is literally untouchable as a human being. For those who don't know, Phoebe Waller-Bridge is like the UK version of Tina Fey. She's a very talented writer, comedian, director who has produced a couple of very successful sitcoms starring herself as a confused, cynical modern women dealing with stupid men, social expectations, relationships, blah blah blah. It's modern feminist comedy for a young female audience. The mystery is what possessed the producers and writers of Dial to think that she belonged in an Indiana Jones movie. It 's like casting Amy Schumer as the sidekick. Apart from anything else, the movie is set in 1969 but Helena is clearly a millennial. And although Harrison Ford easily matches Tom Cruise for train-roof fights, a car chases, the overall depressing message is that he is a relic of an old Thirties generation whose time is past. Also, the time travel is ridiculous. The Indian Jones movies are not science-fiction, they are about supernatural powers - the Ark, the Grail, etc. No flying saucers and time machines. Archimedes would be pissed.
@etsequentia6765

Don't knock casting Amy Schumer in Indiana Jones so easily. It's not so far-fetched. I can see Amy Schumer being cast as the giant boulder rolling around trying to crush IJ under its weight, she can definitely sell it. Alternatively, she *could* be the comic relief if she spent the entire movie running around and screaming and being hit by various moving and flying objects. She sure would get more authentic laughs that way then she ever got during her entire "comedy career", even with the stolen jokes. Let me get this straight: pwb spent years selling *MISANDRY* to an audience of misandric women, making money and gaining fame out of promoting and practicing hatred for the male half of humanity, yet has the audacity to lecture everyone misogyny is bad thing? am I getting this right?

Indiana Jones and Star Wars were inspired by and were tributes to movies and serials of the 30's and 40's. The stories and characters are universal and eternal. There is no "modern" audience that won't like the first Star Wars and Indy films over their last few films. First, they were well crafted. Great editing, dialogue, and characters. Secondly, they were unashamed about what they were. The recent films are the opposite. Poorly crafted and executed. Pretentious and ashamed of what they were. Unwittingly, I think, they commit franchise suicide.

I think the outlandish unrealistic parts of the franchise were always very interesting, even if we did see the aliens fully in CS. Crystal Skull understood Indiana Jones and added Mutt and Spalko, who both had pretty enjoyable chemistry with the rest of the main cast. I would so much rather keep them in the movie. That’s not at all the case with Helena. She doesn’t even slightly feel like family to her, or bonded at all like Indy and Mutt did. Also, Marion as a mother is just so nice to see. I loved the family dynamic in CS. They both were very flawed movies, but I love CS with my heart. It was harmless and even sweet at the ending and many scenes.

What's most ironic here is that Disney thinks it's looking to the future, but it's actually trapped in the past. By doing little more than churning out sequels and remakes, Disney believes it's putting a modern spin on old stories. They are, but that's where their creativity (assuming that mindlessly reflecting real-world issues counts as creativity) comes to a dead stop. In the 1980s, Hollywood might not have reflected the social changes of the era, but they still made highly original films that were daring in their time. (Of course, they didn't spend obscene amounts of money on production, so they could afford to be daring.) But by doing nothing but updating existing properties, modern Disney has somehow managed to be politically correct and conservative at the same time.

Reminds me of Sean Connery who after The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen decided to quit making movies altogether. Although not a bad movie, he felt it was not as successful of a film as it should have been and decided to leave his legacy untarnished. These older guys need to know when to quit, or focus on roles that match their age. This risks ruining their legendary status.

I thought the movie was OK. Helena was definitely the worst part, but remember Willie in Temple of Doom was annoying too. One thing that could have fixed Helena was to have her be Sallah's daughter and Sallah comes to Indy for his help getting his daughter back. Shoe-horning in new characters as 'old friends' to establish connections when there are simpler ways is just stupid. Heck, they could have even started it out as a "someone stole the dial from a museum and Helena's involved" plot. Having multiple parties just decide to go after it on the same day and they all knew where to look is too convenient.

Although I agree to your points, I would not go as far as to say this film represents “the destruction of a beloved character’s legacy”. If we like it or not, getting older can in fact be tough, and the greats of yesterday eventually tend to get outperformed or outwitted by younger competitors. So there is a sad touch of reality to this, even though I’m aware that not compassion but malice has been at work here. Anyhow, as far as I am concerned, even a “weakened” Indy stands above such hostilities, and it takes more than K.K. can muster to tear down his legacy 😤

Tell that to the defense still trying to tackle Barry Sanders. The Barry Sanders that retired when he did would have made today's defenses look stupid trying to tackle him. He could have played another 10 years and maybe tarnish his legacy by staying too long like Roy Jones Jr. Sometimes the only winning move is not to make an adventure movie featuring an 80 year old person. If that's the case, should have gotten Betty White to do a Lara Croft movie.

Crystal Skull got so much flak at the time, enough said. Btw, let's be fair, however, the notorious 'nuclear fridge" scene was arguably no wackier than some of the other stuff he's done. Although, to my mind, the conclusion (Indy and Marion's wedding, their son looking speculatively at The Hat) was both satisfying and very respectful Who'd think that this movie would become a fond memory? Indy 5 is a dumpster fire, to put it nicely. But I do maintain hope for the overall franchise. It is possible for Indiana Jones to EVENTUALLY make the same kind of transition as Superman, James Bond, Sherlock Holmes, Doctor Who, Tarzan, Star Trek, and many others.

I went to movie theatre as well. The main issue was chopped up story. Helena was given a leading role but without any tangible connection to arch nemesis. Her character was just running around doing her own thing with very loose connection to main story. Usually this is for the role of side characters. I did not find her stuck up attitude to be misplaced. That is exactly how most young strong women in man's world act, trying to prove that they are better than men. And given her age she had not had time to wise up/settle to more self assured world view.

Great breakdown on this last Indy,only problem you spend to much time looking for things in the script you dont like so you empower the faults to a huge level.Previous Indy films has always followed same path,action ,stunts, spfx,chase,and more action,fun boom,fun fantasy,and more boom, if looking for detailed characters,or script,etc we are talking Indiana Jones not Julius Ceaser.
@sder

I agree that only focusing on particular faults in the film paints an incomplete picture, which may inadvertently inflate the issue. That said, my intent was simply to provide evidence from the film to support my claims of disdain for Helena’s character. The intention was not to dissect the entirety of the film, otherwise my selection of scenes to discuss would have been more varied. Also, I don’t think it’s necessary to look to “more detailed” characters like Julius Caesar for critical analysis purposes. Every character in media has been created and presented to the public and is completely open to scrutiny. I think it’s valuable to hold modern films to a high standard and not let them off easy for lazy writing.

And 2 is that he got shot in the shoulder. It basically sidelined him for the big final act of the movie. Yes Raiders had him attached to a pole but last crusade had him get shot and that ending was amazing. Just do something like that again It was an ok movie. Great ending for an iconic character. 8:02 The most blatantly shallow, self-absorbed, and inhumane part of her character was when she was celebrating their escape and she had to be reminded by Indy that his friend has just been killed. Maybe she would have been a somewhat worthwhile part of the movie if she actually LEARNED something about being less demeaning, selfish and greedy. But the movie would need to be a LOT longer to give her time for that kind of growth.

From what was shown in the movie she didn't particularly like her father because almost everytime Indy mentions his exploits she pretends like she didn't hear him which is realistic because her dad went mad researching the dial so she probably holds resentment towards him. As for her being a troubled person that's just straight bs 🤣. Why? Because she went back to Morocco where she played a son of a mob boss to sell off more stuff. She likes and is confident in the way her life is and there is not even the faintest whiff of her changing her lifestyle anytime soon by the end of the movie.
