A study on the tragic end of John the Baptist. This is the only passage in Mark that isn't directly about Jesus and it records the sad reality of how pride, corruption and lust lead to the murder of John the Baptist. In addition to the discussion on what lead to John's murder under the orders of Herod we will also get into some apologetics issues surrounding the death of John that skeptics bring up, which actually give us more reason to trust what Mark says.
Here's the video I mentioned from Inspiring Philosophy on the topic of supposed contradictions in the death of John the Baptist. • John the Baptist Blund...

Great study, again! Lots of awesome “Wingerisms!” “The glory of marriage is when you see the flaws and stick with it!” “Sin isn’t getting more prevalent, it’s becoming normalized.” "Sexual sin is the fall of great men.” “Don’t quit. Don’t give up. Stop expecting it to work!” (And words of the day: enemy attestation and contradiction.) Thanks Brother!

Christianity has literally been corrupted so badly its now the way to murder people and get super rich. Its just a huge criminal funnel.

It’s easy for me to listen to my favorite type of preacher/preaching and enjoy how godly it sounds - and not have my heart moved one inch. I can’t thank you enough! Your sermons are so well researched and well presented, you give hard truth in a way that makes a person think, in a way that makes sense, and is so reasonable. I wish I had better words of praise. Most pastors give their opinions and philosophies on life and clip (usually out of context) verses that seemingly support what they want to say. (And this sickens me! I desire truth, not deception, no matter how “good” it sounds to the mass of itching ears.) But your goal is to share the truth, whatever that might be; and you flesh it out with details that help us understand better the reality, with layers of history. Thank you, thank you, thank you. God bless you and keep you going strong. In Jesus’ name, Amen. ❤️✝️

Love your teaching, Mike. I especially appreciate the way you have navigated the putrid pit which is our political arena today. I have no great love for the Democratic Party, but what is sad is the amount of hatred I and others will receive when we call Republicans on the carpet for their wholly inadequate leadership, especially Donald Trump. He reminds me of Herod in so many ways, it's not funny, and the reactions of CHRISTIANS towards any criticism of him is sad, indeed! The rot and corruption that has been on full display by him and those around him...surely God cannot bless this! I fear a Democratic landslide in November that may "stabilize" things for a time, but will eventually lead to more moral decay, and it will be the fault--in great part--of evangelical Christians choosing a totally immoral reprobate as a figurehead, almost an idol, to place in such a high position as a "hero" of the faith. The man paid off a porn star to keep quiet about the affair they had while his wife was pregnant with his 3rd son, and continued paying her even after he was in office. And that's just ONE issue. Let that sink in. I will often look to Ezekiel 16 (would love to see you do a video just on this chapter!) and compare Jerusalem to Sodom (immorality)/Samaria (apostasy). In verses 49-51, God says, "Behold, this was the guilt of your sister Sodom: she and her daughters had pride, excess of food, and prosperous ease, but did not aid the poor and needy. They were haughty and did an abomination before me. So I removed them, when I saw it. Samaria has not committed half your sins. You have committed more abominations than they, and have made your sisters appear righteous by all the abominations that you have committed." If the Democratic, liberal wing of our country is Sodom/Samaria, I would submit that the Republican, conservative party of Trump is Jerusalem. Indeed, it will now be virtually impossible for the Republican Party to use character, personal morality, or ethical behavior as issues they can attack Joe Biden on, for the Republicans "have committed more abominations than (the Democrats), and have made (them) appear righteous by all the abominations that (they) have committed." I don't know what the solution is. Perhaps we are at the end of the rope and we can "only" call for the church to repent. As I peter 4:17 says, "For it is time for judgment to begin at the household of God; and if it begins with us, what will be the outcome for those who do not obey the gospel of God?" God help us. We don't need "national" revival, we need for the church to repent!

Peoria and Galilee’s were his control. He was Tetrarch, not a King. It is personal, because he killed John. Gospel of Luke, a woman named Johanna in Luke 8:3 ...her husband is Herod Stewart. Heck, when I tell other Christian's remarriage while the other spouse is alive is adultery, they want to take my head. It not a secular issue.
@DreaPark
@DreaPark 4 жыл бұрын
That’s extremely legalistic. There are too many variables, and too many scriptures to claim that to be 💯 the case in every situation. I’m separated from my husband for the second time. He’s been caught flirting with other women.... and watching pornography... and potentially cheated physically at one point. I tried to salvage the marriage.... God has given me clear guidance to divorce him. So if I meet an actual believer who wants to worship God with me, and be obedient..... I’m committing adultery? Lol
@DreaPark
@DreaPark 4 жыл бұрын
Also let me add. We claimed we were Christian when we married... but nothing about our life mirrored Christianity... then I truly got saved, and began to walk away from my old ways.... my husband got worse and pulled hard in the opposite direction.... so I’m to stay with a cheating unbeliever.... or if we divorce and I find someone else... I’m committing adultery? Or say after we divorce he finds God..... and I’m remarried to a believer.... and my ex repents and wants to walk with God.... he’s supposed to come back to me, and I leave my new spouse?? Lol

@@DreaPark calling it legalistic when you're using the law to justify adultery is oxymoron. Jesus said, very clearly, what God has joined together... let not any man separate,.. or they are accursed, also....remarriage is adultery when the other remains alive... and all adulterer's will be judged. ... how is it legalistic when I'm making the same argument Jesus made, and you're making the same argument the Pharisee's made?

I believe there is a parallel that seems to be missed concerning Herod and John the baptist with Felix and Paul (Acts 24:25). Both John and Paul spoke a message of righteousness, and both Herod and Felix were disturbed. Isn't this a common reaction today with unbelievers? Paul sums this up in 2 Corinthians 2:15-16, as Christians, we are a fragrance of life to other believers and death to unbelievers.

I feel like the relationship between Herod and John is similar to the relationship between Zedekiah and Jeremiah in the Old Testament (as told in Jeremiah chapters 37 and 38). Jeremiah repeatedly gave Zedekiah the command from God to surrender to the invading Babylonian army, which is something that offender a bunch of Zedekiah's officers, who wanted to kill him for his predictions of Babylonian victory. Now Zedekiah did protect Jeremiah from his officials and even allowed him to preach directly to him in a similar manner that Herod allowed John to do. Yet similar to Herod, Zedekiah never accepted Jeremiah's message, even though he was totally okay with hearing it over and over.

Drew Remsik reading the first chapter of Genesis, it’s impossible to explain. I found the best way to go is to show all the wrong science that has emerged over the years, beginning with a flat Earth. In the end, it all lands on faith cause we really can’t comprehend how God brought the universe into existence nor what time God did so (other than what is told to us in the Bible). I would also show how modern science has its own political agendas, for example gender dysphoria which is a mental disorder and is now praised and encouraged as “gender fluidity”.

The axe was set. Mat 3:7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Mat 3:8 Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance: Mat 3:9 And think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham. Mat 3:10 And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. John predicted the destruction of that generation before Jesus did in Matthew 21:43 before the kingdom was given to another nation. I never caught that before until today. The word of God has come alive since I got out of the pre-trib rapture/dispensational paradigm.

This Mary Magdalene was attending on Christ’s cross and his sepulchre, and, if she was not Mary the sister of Lazarus, either that particular friend and favourite of Christ’s did not attend then, or the evangelists did not take notice of her, neither of which we can suppose; thus Dr. Lightfoot argues. Yet there is this to be objected against it that Mary Magdalene is reckoned among the women that followed Jesus from Galilee (Mt. 27:55, Mt. 27:56 ); whereas Mary the sister of Lazarus had her residence in Bethany. 3. Another of them was Joanna the wife of Chuza, Herod’s steward. She had been his wife (so some), but was now a widow, and left in good circumstances. If she was now his wife, we have reason to think that her husband, though preferred in Herod’s court, had received the gospel, and was very willing that his wife should be both a hearer of Christ and a contributor to him. 4. There were many of them that ministered to Christ of their substance. It was an instance of the meanness of that condition to which our Saviour humbled himself that he needed it, and of his great humility and condescension that he accepted it. Though he was rich, yet for our sakes he became poor, and lived upon alms. Let none say that they scorn to be beholden to the charity of their neighbours, when Providence has brought them into straits; but let them ask and be thankful for it as a favour. Christ would rather be beholden to his known friends for a maintenance for himself and his disciples than be burdensome to strangers in the cities and villages whither he came to preach. Note, It is the duty of those who are taught in the word to communicate to them who teach them in all good things; and those who are herein liberal and cheerful honour the Lord with their substance, and bring a blessing upon

So do all futurist believe that there will be a second coming of John the Baptist as well as Jesus? Or Will there be another like John the Baptist who works with the spirit of Elijah?

I agree that pornography and sexual sin is a serious problem of men. But to assume women are somehow free of this problem and completely innocent is also not right. Everything we do and have ever done on the internet is being carefully documented by Google.

I wonder what was meant by "John was not the light, the light was coming into the world." John and Jesus were already 30 years old, but the light was "coming" into the world. ??? Hmm. Perhaps from birth to year 30 Jesus didn't consider himself living in man's world? Or Coming into the world meant 'He's getting ready to be the example for the world'. "The spirit, as a dove, came down and remained on Jesus", The Spirit & Jesus became one. No, It can't be that, became the light after they became one, can't be. Or maybe maybe thats when Jesus became Papa's second born.

Problem is for Mike, everything has to be literal. Why not just understand the point of the story? Why does it always have to be historically correct? I'm 7 minutes in and already having problems with some of his claims. Jews (to be fair, he says many of them) had stopped believing and expecting prophets in the first century. This is so far from the historical record. It's funny because he quotes Josephus, knowing full well that Josephus notes numerous 1st century prophets. The Egyptian, Theudas, Jesus ben Ananias and John. We also know that the Essene community at Qumran considered "The Teacher of Righteousness" prophetic, and then there are the Christian prophets of Jesus and Paul. In short, we see a region in the first century chalk full of charismatic prophets. Mike is being quite disingenuous here.

It is in the wisdom your right. Herod knew John was worth more than half of his kingdom for by his wisdom he could gain thrice that back. It comes with fearing the LORD the most, it's in the wisdom books Ben Sira and Solomon. Herod wanted John's wisdom for his outside show but wouldnt do it himself, and so GOD being jealous woulnt let that happen. Using all things for the good

Mike...I enjoy your exegetical studies and how you use your gifts to edify the body of Christ. However, I take issue with your comment that you “cringe” at some of the comments President Trump has made and feel that should have been made in private. Certainly Trump is unorthodox but do you cringe at what he has done? Because no president has done more for Israel, the right for life, or Christianity in general than President Trump. Personally, I cringe at what the other party has to offer. Thanks again for your ministry

These comments you made about politics is extremely important but can be easily misunderstood. Yes I've cringed at some of the things Trump has said but I've cringed even more at what Hillary or Biden has said. So I'm voting for policies not lack of cringing. And as a Christian if I vote for someone who I haven't cringed at but I know isn't going to win I have now given my vote to the left and everything they stand for. So the statement is very true ,we're not voting for a pastor we're voting for policies, it's politics not a Sunday morning service.
