Why Hollywood Won't Cast John Cusack Anymore

In 1989, John Cusack cemented his place in pop culture history when he starred in the teen rom-com Say Anything as Lloyd Dobler. It has one of the most iconic scenes in movie history of Cusack holding a boom box above his head to show his love interest Diane Court he hasn’t given up on her.
In the 90s, Cusack starred in more memorable roles in Bullets Over Broadway, Being John Malkovich, Grosse Pointe Blank, and High Fidelity. Whenever a movie needed a lovable loser and comedic romantic lead, John Cusack was the guy.
But lately, Cusack has gone missing from the Hollywood spotlight. So, why won’t Hollywood cast this once iconic actor anymore?

You should do a series on great character actors of the past... Strother Martin, etc........... and here is a GREAT idea... how about a couple videos that show the very first movie appearances of actors that became HUGE... like Jeff Goldblum in Death Wish, Tom Cruise in The Outsiders, etc etc...

You are right... I can't remember the last movie made in Hollywood, I cried about...that was a underdog Swedish movie on Amazon prime that year... Its all about comic heroes... And that's just popcorn cinema. Nolans Batman is way more meaningful than all Marvel Movies together. John Wick 1 and 2 were something new, something different but not that meaningful like movies in the 90s or 00s.

Cusack is great at idealistic, upbeat, dark humor. Many lead actors dominate the screen. Cusack doesn't need to blot out the scenery because his expressions are intricate and draw the eye. He manages to withstand the hard situations with pluck, and win in the end, by patience and wit. That does not get old. His kind of character would be great in a film about Today's fascist mess because he wouldn't fit in. He is good at drama, comedy, and action. I know he will make more blockbusters, and Hollywood will wear its names on its sleeves as part of its charms.

I saw John being interviewed at a live event in 2012(with an audience Q&A that I took part in). He said that he was willing to take on more challenging roles and didn't want to be tied solely to his Lloyd Dobler("Say Anything")character. I'd think he had an idea that there could be consequences before he remarked about Hollywood. What I admire about John is that if he makes a statement/opinion, he provides clear examples to back it up. Now that he's starring on "Utopia," hopefully people will admire John's versatility as an actor.

kate davenporty But he's far from a saint himself. He grew in an Evanston mansion and several of my friends (male and female) knew him all through school. They had nothing but horrible things to say about him, and I believe them (but won't repeat their claims.) Met him once at a Chicago party - his arrogance was off the charts, and he treated women like sh*t. Best friends with Jeremy Piven, long described as a total jerk / sexual harasser, including a brand new case that emerged yesterday. But everyone - without exception - loved his sister Joan Cusack.

I enjoy John's films, a film does not have to Please the critic to please the public. Critics have been given too much power as to what films are shown in theaters so the public never sees some movies we would enjoy seeing in theaters, Sometimes it has to do with popularity more than what may Please the public. Many movies that make it into theaters seem to be aimed at adolescent audiences or the less intelligent. I would enjoy actually watching a movie in a theater but very few target an audience that has graduated college. I enjoy a good actor/actress of any age, good writing, directing and a whole team but often it seems whoever is making less intelligent films. The population is aging so it would make sense to keep us in the theater crowd. My man friend and I have found movies to be a less reliable date night. John is a hero protecting young actors/actresses as well as freedom of the press. I look forward to his next film and the younger performers that will work within a more creative and professional industry.

Critics are there just for the reason you mentioned- to help weed out the films aimed at the "less intelligent." However, there is a time and a place for any film. They're not necessarily aimed at unintelligent people, but at people who just want some mindless fun to relax their brain. Being a college graduate does not necessarily make one intelligent, to be honest. Just my two cents.

I'm impressed about his passion for free speech. Funny, though, that his love of Obama changed when Obama started messing with the Constitution. He's always been a exceptional actor. When the time is right and when it's on his terms now, luckily, he'll be back to whatever movies he wants to. He's totally right about Hollywood...but that's not the only place to make movies anymore. He'll shine no matter what he does next...

John Cusack, was and is the most interesting actor, ever. Makes one wonder, doesn't it? We've always had freedom of speech. Now it seems, those who say ANYTHING about HOLLYWOOD, gets snubbed!! I've never seen one movie that I didn't LIKE -- in whatever movie he played in. I believe they're is something WIERD, going on! Call it an over-acting way of thinking -- but, it's just a gut feeling. So far in my life, that gut feeling has never let me down. Good or bad.

Hollywood movies are mostly rehashed garbage, though I did like him in The Grifters. That was a rare good Hollywood movie. Indies are so much less formulaic and refreshingly different. I like that he is following his heart, cos that is the only true path.

I Really like that John Cusack has made it clear that he knows whats going on and won't just go along with it, but I really like the movies he has been producing and/or directing, NAMELY the terrifying movies he has starred in "1408" and Stephen King's "Cell". Both of these movies are 2 of my recent choices to my movie library. GO JOHN CUSACK.

I'll forget I saw this and just continue to watch his older movies when they come up. "High Fidelity" is ranked well below where it should be in film history, it's a top 100 movie of all time. Makes me wonder if he wasn't pissing people off in the industry back then for it to be not constantly claimed as the great movie it is. "1408" is a great horror flick, I avoided it for a bit because I knew the bulk of it is just him solo acting in it, I was very wrong. Never dismiss a Cusack movie, they may not all be great, but not many are bad either.

He was criticising Hollywood waayyy before. I remember him bringing up the ageism women experience in Hollywood such a long time ago. Only now are some celebrities speaking up against it but its like easier to jump on that bandwagon, with the whole Weinstein thing etc. He had guts to stand up to that stuff, while most actors couldn't care less.

I really like John Cusack, I still believe his films made today are great. Sure nothing can compare to like Con Air or Hi Fidelity but I saw Reclaim and it wasn't horrible and neither was Cell. Critics are just too hard on movies, lower your standards and realize that sometimes not every movie is going to be a great big production like everything else.
