Buying a carbine was the best thing I ever did. I live in northern Canada in the boreal forest and it's thick brush most of the time. I dropped a 3-12x42 Engage on it and the combination of rifle and scope allows me to shoot in heavy brush and wide open fields. I think everyone should have at least one carbine in their collection.

The Mohawk 600 is my go to deer rifle chambered in .308 win. I put a steel floor plate and xs scout sights on it. Its hard to beat the classics. Thank you brother for the awesome videos, they are greatly appreciated !

Thank you for another excellent topic. One carbine that would be a great brush rifle would be the Swedish M-94 carbine chambered for the 6.5x55 Swede. Will take anything reasonable in the brush, save for the biggest brutes in Africa.

Thanks for anther great video on great guns. In the 1960s I was building rifles from military surplus rifle actions. I bought a Swedish Mauser carbine for a project, but subsequently found a Model 98 action would be better suited. I kept the Swedish carbine as issued and it was actually a great utility/hunting rifle. I still have it. In the mid 80s, I was shopping for "first deer rifles" for two sons and bought 2 Ruger M77 RSI carbines in .243 for them. The shop had one additional Model 77RSI, but it was in .250 Savage. I treated myself to that one! Since then a third son came along and he ended up with the .250 Savage. I keep him fed with handloads for it. (it's the better of the two cartridges, IMO) When Ruger introduced the #1 RSI, I jumped all over one in 7x57mm. I still hang on to that one. Carbines are GREAT for hunting where you carry the gun a lot more than you shoot it. The 6.5x55mm is one of my all time favorite cartridges...among the .300 Savage, 7x57mm Mauser, .303 British and .35 Whelen.

With the long reigning popularity of the 6.5mm Creedmoor, it seems nobody considers hunting at less than half a mile any longer. In my region, a carbine chambered in a brush-bucking cartridge makes far more sense.

I have 2 swedish carbines. They shoot great with my handloads. And a Italian 6.5 carbine. Another great shooter. And they are scoped. Love the 6.5 bullets . Oh and a Russian carbine 7.62 54. Loves to shoot the 123 bullets in 7.62 . 312. Bullets shoot great.mt daughter owns and shoots it.

Great video. I hunt mainly with a Marlin 336 , with the 20 inch bbl. One advantage of the Marlin ovet the Winchester M 94 is.........they are available in the GREAT 35 rem caliber ! Now that is a Brush gun Combo. Harder hitting than the 30-30 , and not as expensive to shoot or as punishing as a 45-70 gov. With the 6x leupold scope, can shoot it accuratly out to 200 yds , so I never feel handicaped. Love your channel, keep up the great videos....

The Remington Model Seven is sooo underrated.

Hunting guns and Milsurp does seem to be going up. I enjoy both. It seems hard to buy a good deal any more. Whenever one arises one must not hesitate. I just recently bought 13 long guns for $1,000 and that was the best deal i've had in a long time. All the serial numbers I looked up placed the guns being made in the 50s.

Mike, I love my 45/70’s (all three of them)! I couldn’t bring myself to sell one of them for anything. Other than my 1895 CB, the other two are short enough and plenty powerful enough for any North woods game I would encounter. I love your entire collection and how impressive a table full of them looks! I love your walnut stocks, even if the black plastic ones are more weather-resistant. Yes, I’m just an old-school guy, I guess!

Mike, carbines have always been my favorite. For target shooting to anything else. Any kind of hunting or pest control. Easier to handle and easy to clean the bore. Great vid.

I remember the Remington Model 600 Mohawk with its conspicuous iron sights back in the early '70's. In .222, .308 and 350 Rem Mag for $167.00. They seemed handy but a little too "angular". I have one of those Miroku Model 94 Short Rifles in 30-30. Very smooth and surprisingly accurate to 200 yards with a 2-7 Leupold and the Hornady LeveRevolution ammo. The design seems to fight putting an optic on it, but it makes a difference in terms of consistency in hitting targets a bit further out.

The 2 I like the most is the Mauser 7*57 and the 1885 trapper. The Ruger is definitely cool to. Thank you Mike

Some real nice carbines there. Being exclusively a timber hunter, and mainly a still hunter/ tracker, I've used a number of iconic bush rifles over the years. My favorite for about 8 seasons have been a couple of beat-up Husqvarna 1600 carbines, something about the fit and balance just works for me. I think the most important thing is to no over-scope them though, theres no rifle more ludicrous than a nice carbine with a massive scope mounted on it.

Once again another great video thank you I really enjoyed carbines. I have a model 600 Remington in 308 and I modified a model 1903A3 trigger guard to fit actually a lot of modifying you have to re-weld on the trigger guard further forward and shorten the whole thing and make a couple of different new holes but it worked really well and it actually looks OK and then they brought out the metal replacement ones oh well I enjoyed making it keep up the videos you don’t put me to sleep I enjoy every video you are very enjoyable to watch in this ridiculously crazy world thanks very much.

The Winchester 94, Marlin 336 and the Remington 760/7600 are 3 of the most popular carbines you see at hunting camps here in Vermont. 90% of the 760/7600's I've seen have been in 30-06.... I'm still chasing a Remington 7600 in 35 Whelen. For me it presents itself as the ultimate hunting carbine where high BC and velocity is exchanged for frontal diameter and handiness. Although... My Marlin 1895G might get jealous.

My father had a Remington 600 when I was very young. He always talked about that rifle. He passed a couple of weeks ago I felt blessed on Father's Day He gave me a Remington Nylon 66 that's what I started/grew up shooting. He always told everyone that that gun created the gun nut that I became. But anyways you bringing up the model 600 made me make the decision that I'm going to buy one in honor of Pops. Thanks for your videos sir!

Wow that Ruger RSI is a real stunner. When I was young, I'd wanted a Remington Model 7 in .243. Sadly that never happened. It would have been the perfect bolt gun for thick places I hunted deer. I do love the model 94 and Marlin 336 though, and they served me well. Thanks for another enjoyable video USOG.

Love the video. Thank you so much for sharing your wisdom. Personally, I love my integrally suppressed Ruger 77/44 with a custom Boyd stock with a 1x prism red dot. I also enjoy the Chiappa Wildlands 1892 Takedown in 44 magnum, my Marlin 1894 SBL also in 44 magnum, and Ruger No 1 in 450 Bushmaster in stainless steel and grey laminate. Also have a Ruger No 1 with a custom stock in 223 Rem and Tikka T3x Lite in 6.5 Creedmoor. I tend to use the Marlin and Chiappa with iron sights but occasionally put a prism on if In low light conditions. I have those day/night scopes on the Rugers and the Tikka, and I use the Silencerco Hybrid for noise suppression, recoil reduction, and enhanced accuracy with almost all my rifles. Other than the 77/44, the gun I want to reach for the most is the Marlin, but somewhat strangely, the gun I almost always actually reach for is the Chiappa with a prism and the Hybrid in the shorter configuration.

Excellent and informative, I personally like the full stock Ruger in .308 which I agree with you is just a one rifle solution to many hunting situations. I think Zastava have a similar bolt action carbine with a full stock, as well they have a full stock smallbore rifle too. Just so many wonderful carbines out there, and my own .303 British Lee Enfield I would classify as a carbine as well. Short guns have been a favorite of mine for years. Currently in my safe are the 742 in 30-06, a Mohawk in .243, a 77RSI in 308 and a #1RSI in 30-06.

Lots of love for the short carbine type rifles. I've like the Winchester and Marlin lever rifles in rifle and revolver cartridges. As always they're great. Another great one is the Ruger scout rifle. I love mine and how reliable it is. Recently I've got ahold of a Browning BLR takedown in 450 Marlin cal. It takes down and has a 20" barrel and comes in many calibers, mine as mentioned is 450 Marlin. Its great that it comes with irons and on mine I put on a micro red dot. What a slick handling and powerful rifle, I wish there were more production and availability of them. In the real world an 18"-20" barrel will perform very well in most situations we can dream up.

I totally agree with your on the Ruger. 308. I own one and yes a true Classic.

Very interesting and informative video, as usual. Another handy carbine is the browning BLR, available in the chamberings you mentioned plus the great little 358 Winchester.

Great interesting video. Thank You. I have always loved carbines (you say it correctly by the way. After all, if you write down the word Woodbine, no one would pronounce it Woodbeen!). I have a Howa Alpine Mountain Rifle in .308 Win here in the UK and I love it. It is really lightweight, very accurate and short enough for all woodland applications, whilst obviously capable of pushing out to long range. I have reverted to the floor plate magazine as the polymer five round box conversion has the mag release exactly where you place your hand and is just the WORST AND MOST APPALLING DESIGN ever! (If only someone would make a decent drop in metal one with a sensible position for the release!) First time out in a high seat, just quietly settling into position, I carefully moved the rifle slightly and managed to dump a full mag into the brush below me. So much for a stealthy arrival on scene! The rifle though, is tremendous and with a Leupold VX-R on top, is fantastic in low light. The bedded fiberglass stock is really good and of course makes it all 'UK weather proof'! You have some lovely rifles there, great collection. Stay safe and happy shooting.

Deal Sir, two years ago I got a Mannlicher Schönauer Mod 1903 build in 1920 and rechambered in the fifties to 7x57, they mounted an Oigee a sniper scope of the same period (1920) by a claw mount. Ist has an spring loaded peepsight and spring loaded cheekpiece for use with the high mounted scope. Mr Hartmann of Hartmann&Weiss Hamburg told me the hole rifle is original. They changed the iron sight into a shallow v suited for intuitutive shooting up to 60 yds. I found some months before an Heeren single shot rifle chambered in 6,5x57R wich is very impressive too, follow up shots can be fired very quickly and you can stalk uncocked with a cartridge in the chamber. Cocking and setting the trigger is the same movement. Mr Hartmann fixed the firing pin. They build at their well known workshop both Hagn and Heeren single shots. Both of my rifles are very short, less than 40“, but the barrel of the Mannlicher is 18“, the Heeren it is 25,5“. I am a hunter not a collector. Both rifles are used regulary as hunting tools (red stag, wildboar and smaller game).

I live in Florida, and enjoy Hog hunting. My favorite Hog rifle is my Mosin Nagant carbine. Polish police patrol rifle turn in. 7.62x54r. I did change the original stock to an ATI. Monte Carlo style black stock. I have a 6-24x50 scope on it, and it has never let me down in dropping Hogs...

I really love my JM Marlin 336 in 30-30, the only thing I regret is that I have a scope on it. But we have to be realistic, I need a scope to shoot longer ranges as my eyes are not that great. Thank you for the great video!

I traded my stevens 22-250 and $200 ontop for a Browning semi auto BAR 270 win. Made in Belgium , 1970. I took off the scope ( nikon prostaff ) and im using the open sights now. I need bullets. I had 1 bullet to test the action out and it runs flawlessly. Im going to take it apart and clean and degrease of coarse. Might have to refinish the stock as its all dinged up and the regular finish is wearing away in some spots. I can make it look new again. I love working on any type of rifle . Mechanos got me into building stuff when i got then for xmas when i was 9 years young. Star wars x wing .

I agree! A short light rifle is fantastic for most forms of hunting in North America. Few of us ever take shots at extreme long range. Most of us sledom shoot past 350m. I like carbines and lever action rifles for this reason.

Your delivery is wonderful, don't change a thing. You can't cover everything, but I would include and heartily endorse both the CZ 527 and Ruger American Ranch carbines in 7.62x39. Both are VERY accurate, cheap to shoot, and even perform very well with inexpensive Russian steel-cased ammo. The CZ has very nice irons; the Ruger comes with a pic rail only. The RARR, especially, is an incredible value. Not too pretty, certainly not classic in style, but man do they shoot. Sub-MOA is easily attainable with off the shelf hunting ammo. Something close to 36" OAL, IIRC. The CZ is pricier, but oh so elegant, justcas accurate, and what a trigger. The 7.62x39 is just about the ideal deer/hog load, and pretty good on black bear, too, I suppose, with ballistics nearly identical to a 30-30 up close, and superior at distance. And great for cheap high-volume shooting.
