I'm planning to hike over 500 miles across the Mojave Desert this winter. This video explains why, with some teasers on how, including footage from a less than successful practice hike in the Providence Mountains.
You may want to turn on closed captions, as my voice is hard to hear in some clips.

Excellent educational videos. Geology and geomorphology in particular are beautiful sciences that give us the proper perspective of our lives, cultures and nations, with respect to the immensity of time. How many people ever have the good fortune and stamina to do such a trip? Thank you for sharing your adventure with us.

I used to do mountain bike rides on random paths in the Mojave. Amazing geology and geography, and occasional weird people.

Those of us who spend a lot of time in the Mojave often worry that we are becoming the weird people . . .

@@tecto_nick I hear you. It’s a weird place, with so many tilted planes (vast alluvial fans that approach planes) and granodiorite or quartz monzonite. Damn, I love the Mojave. Once, I came over a drainage at the north end of the Old Woman mountains where there was a kid dragging a massive magnet in the wash. I’m sure he was told that magnetite = gold. I waited in quiet until he was called for supper, ‘cause I was a little freaked out by another human. My prof told me that there was a myth that that was the case.

Tried to bag McPherson Pk from Mitchell Caverns in the Providence Range in the 80s and failed. Not enough water and the soles of one of my Garmont boots came off climbing one of the chutes of limestone scree. Good luck! I'll keep track.

Lightweight, but not sure it could handle the muddy slime of your typical desert spring for 5 weeks. I use a MSR Guardian.

This looks like exactly the sort of thing I would love to do - now I wish I had a sabbatical! Maybe someday I'll do the same thing but across the Basin and Range.

The Basin and Range is another place I've seriously considered crossing. The journey is about 50% longer, though . . . .
