If the term losses its validity under the Indian perspective, then in what sense would you attach the word Athiest for yourself wouldn't it be better to call yourself Carvaka or someone from other Atheistic schools of thought? and lastly, 3. it's not related to this video but what is the response to the question of moral /ethical theory for materialists such as Carvakas?

The thing about the charvaka is that most of what we know about them is from criticism of their thoughts by Vedic schools of thought. The point about atheism and Hindu atheism being a privilege is quite true, your atheism, even rejecting the vedas, rejecting karma is tolerated only so far as you keep caste. Once you cross that threshold even your privilege can't save you, and your chances of ending like Pansare,Lankesh and Kalaburgi are extremely high.

Wikipedia compiles the definition of religion as : Religion is usually defined as a social-cultural system of designated behaviors and practices, morals, beliefs, worldviews, texts, sanctified places, prophecies, ethics, or organizations, that generally relates humanity to supernatural, transcendental, and spiritual elements; however, there is no scholarly consensus over what precisely constitutes a religion. So, If Hinduism is a religion and religion is defined as such and If such socio-cultural and other elements from a wide spectrum of elements of the Hindu society of India are still a part of our lives then we may very well be a Hindu-Atheist/Hindu-Agnostic-Atheist

This singular focus on the Charvaka tradition is a bit absurd. It isn't really the only Hindu philosophic tradition that was atheistic. There were quite a few other ones such as the Ajivika philosophy(which also rejected the vedas) and Samakhya(which is non-theistic but accepts the vedas). While we can debate forever on whether these philosophical tradiitons can be considered "Hindu", it is certain that there was space for Hindu atheists to exist. Moreover, the whole antithetical nature of atheism and religion is an Abrahamic concept.

I don't believe in god. But I am Hindu culturally. I have strong emotional affinity with 'hinduness'. I will take 7 circles around the fire when I will marry. I will be burnt in a pyre when I die. I sometimes go to the temple whenever I m with someone and visiting a place. I celebrate festivals. And I also have an affinity to my caste identity. But I consider all castes to be equal. I don't understand what has a belief in god to do with caste. And yes, I am a so called 'upper caste'. Tribalism is a basic human instinct. Caste is just that, a tribe and an entity. Belief in god is not intricately linked to caste identity. But as far as Hinduism is concerned, I put it above my caste identity and below my national identity. And I feel lucky to be born in a hindu family and culture because it gave me the freedom to think anyway I want. Charvak philosophy is something I am interested in but haven't read about. It seems interesting though. Jai Hind 🇮🇳

And also how did you come to this conclusion that "Hindu atheist" is a privilege of the "Upper Caste"? Also, Can you distinguish between "Jaati", "Varna" and "Kul"? How are they different? Can you explain the words "caste" and "casteism"? Since when the word is in use and how did it come to be used in India and By whom? How it is different from the "Varna System" of Bharat? Finally, Who did the first "Caste Census" and their process of surveying, intentions, and outcomes?

Exactly and hinduism (Sanatana Dharma) and Indian culture are deeply interwined. Say Diwali. Diwali is cultural pot of India but at the same it is religous. Now I want to be athiest. I don't believe in gods and also not in Rama . But I don't want to leave diwali because its my culture. I don't want to disbelieve in Rama perhaps I would still chose to worship him as a good human being of his time. I may also chant Hare Rama Hare Krishna. This is what my ancients have been doing for millenia. I don't want to abondon the kirtan bhajan because I like them. I don't want to stop listening to songs of Hindu gods because it gives me a peace of mind. And if I do all of those, I won't be called "athiest" by western standard anymore. So a Hindu athiest or Sanatani Nastik is one like me. And besides that as I said, There are many Sanatani Nastik sects. Pretty substantial arguments. It was fun listening to them. Some counterpoints. Assuming that religion necssitates faith in a deity or a personal god, if deistic Hindus don't have a problem with atheism, then there is inherently no problem with using the descriptor "Hindu" for your own personal identity even if it means you suspend judgement vis-a-vis the existence of a personal god. Towards the end, you invoke the argument that sounds a lot like the argumentum ad populum, whereby truth is granted simply because the majority seeks it so. That is a bit defeatist imo because if we are concerned with labels, "Hindu" is indeed geographical. It comes directly from the river Indus and is in fact of non-Indian origin. Therefore, just because the majority claim that they are "superior" because of faith based claims (which BTW is something you did not fully delve into) and thus have a right to a label that is inherently geographical in origin is a bit superficial. PS. I do agree with you with the order of the new atheist books lol

I have certain doubts @vimoh, I hope you could help me with that. Who is a true Hindu? What are the traits that define a Hindu? What if my practices are in contravention with the Vedas or the Upanishads? or, Does Vedas has an authoritative character? Upanishads and the Vedas contradict each other at many junctures, so is it a religion of contradictions? As Swami Vivekananda said, "Hinduism is a RELIGION of religions.", but then Hinduism would then just be an aggregation of multiple cults which are more often than not at variance with each other. If for the sake of argument, we accept Swami Vivekananda's version that each path leads to the same god, how is it even possible when different cults preach different paths which are at variance with each other at times, or it can be deduced that there is only one almighty and the differences in religion exist due to socio-cultural differences, then it essentially means that the rituals prescribed are useless so might be Swamiji would have been indicating that? May be! Also, an argument that often floats in social media is that Hinduism allows people to chalk out their personal way to deal with their own god. So, if that's so then Hinduism should not prescribe any precepts then?

So here's the thing. Human beings try to find meaning in life. They either examine their own thinking and beliefs and come to the conclusion that they have a purpose in life. Or they don't do such examination or go for one of the readymade purpose packages available to them. These readymade packages are religions. So when you ask me who is a true Hindu, my answer would be to ask why that question is important. Because maybe there is something called a true Hindu and maybe there isn't. The answers to that question can be various. It does not matter. We can engage in "true meaning" conversations till the proverbial cows come home. But it's a futile conversation. Truth is, if you want to call yourself Hindu, you can. It's no different from calling yourself a leprechaun or a robot or a dinosaur. It's just a word about whose definition there may be some disagreement and some agreement. @@ankitjain3760 moksh - absolute nothingness. Soul is chetna or consiousness. Logically both of these exist. What doesn't exist is rebirth and karma theory of Jainism. I think karma and rebirth were invented to keep the morality intact, so that the law and order could be easily maintained and the masses could be controlled in a better efficient way. Jainism could have been a perfect atheistic hub if it had compromised it's theory on rebirth. Even karma could maybe somehow justified, but rebirth is something which will never be proved and doesn't exist either. I'll come to my point of how karma could exist in a practical form, I will give a very very basic example for that. You eat non veg, you behave more violently, because of the tamas gun of meat. Which leads you to behave in a violent way, often it could eventually lead you to troubles as it plays with your temper, and concentration. So if the tamas, rajas and satva gunas can be proven, it is easy to prove that non veg can lead to a bad destiny in future. Same way, if you steal, you might get caught someday, atleast there will be a fear of getting caught, or fear of getting robbed or fear that someone else might steal something from you. And hence that constant state of fear, could lead to concurrent problems. These can be logical justifications which can be given for karma. Karma was also evolved in order to create more empathy in human beings, so that they behave more empathetically towards everyone. As non violence (ahimsa) was one of main part of Jainism, karma might have been used to promote ahimsa. Karma might be a partially correct or partially incorrect theory, but it does help in maintaining social good and social harmony, if practiced thoroughly.

As far as I understand syllogism, which some people might know, is an important discipline of set theory, the negation of "Vedas are absolutely correct." is "Vedas are not absolutely correct.", which is to say "Some things in Vedas are wrong.". The operative word here is "some". I am still at 4:37, so, I don't know what Vimoh would say after that, but I would just talk of one reason I call myself Hindu Atheist is because of the fact that I am a vegetarian, which is a cultural impact of Hinduism in my life, and I actually believe non-vegetarian practices are immoral (I also have the understanding that Morality is not based in Science. Don't interpret that as if I am saying Morality is based in any religion.). I am not sure if vegetarianism is promoted in Vedas or not, but even if it is, and if I think it is the moral thing to do, I am not going to say it is wrong because it is written in Vedas just to be called/known as an atheist.

I call myself a hindu atheist as an acknowledgement of the fact that I am actively benefiting by being born in the right place. It has nothing to do with belief for me because I am convinced religion was a mistake of humanity. It's not to be cool and hip, though I do see your point somewhat. If I stop recognizing myself as hindu, it would be akin to hiding the privilege that I have (that allows me to be an atheist) and preaching rationality to those without that same privilege for whatever reason.

I do not take the authority of the Vedas completely because I haven't read it all, yet I do not pray to any God or gods. Why do I not get the choice to call myself free of religion? The point you made has just too many assumptions.

So according to you Indian teenagers started calling themselves atheists only because three or four western atheists made the term "atheism" popular and "hip" as you call it? Is this not pure anecdotal evidence, something that an atheist who loves rationality should avoid? Don't Indian teenagers have a brain of their own? If you started calling yourself an Indian atheist seemingly out of your thirst for knowledge, what makes you feel others are not similarly seeking knowledge due to their personal life struggles? I think it is incredibly condescending on your part to say that Indian youth are someone who blindly follow westerners and that too on topics that require a drastic restructuring of thought processes.

@@vimoh The desire for banning people who disagree with you indicates a very high level of intolerance, something that a rational atheist should desist from doing. However, feel free to ban me whenever you want. I will take it sportingly. But when doing so ask yourself if you are feeling triggered by simple questions. How then will you present unbiased opinions to the outside world? Only small immature kids talk about "cancel culture" and "bans"! The best atheist channels on YT (should I recommend some to you?) are very openminded and allow others to challenge the host's opinions.

Thanks for the generic "be open minded" advice. But my point was about you lying about my views. You want open-minded discussion? Ask open-minded questions. Don't just outright lie and then expect a discussion. I do a live stream twice a week where I talk face to face with people who agree as well as disagree with me. So there is no question of being not open minded. That you would make that a point without addressing the fact that you lied about my views, says more about you than me.

If Hinduism accepts atheism it doesnt mean atheism comes under its realm,If there's no solid and one definition of Hinduism than its not even a concept or a philosophy or a religion or any idea at all perhaps I dont think those who were entirely atheists ever wanted to include themselves into Hinduism as well like charvakas, mimansa darshan followers ,grammarians etc People have later most probably classified them also under the same realm of Hinduism so that it becomes practically impossible to escape from Hinduism in any way at all Since you can either be religious or not in fact even agnostic people are being pushed to believe in god or Spirituality as the modern day spiritualists try really hard to persuade them "come let us be a part of this journey for the discovery of god and follow all these so called methods to experience Something mystical"

That's why u never called hinduism a religion or cult like other abhramic religions. always believed for one god but in Hinduism there is one main things which itself not an god is called brahmaan.
