What if we use a pot with drainage hole and rocks at the bottom? Will it damage the roots?
@teancoffee2082 жыл бұрын
Probably not, it just won't drain as smoothly bc water can get trapped btw rocks at the bottom. I can imagine that being ok for a plant with short roots though
@meloza2 жыл бұрын
I don’t think it will damage the roots. better have a mix of some media materials, which gives good water circulation and air (rock is really good) but also one that keeps some moisture but not too much. also to keep the nutrients from fertilizer. it depens on what kind of plant you’re planting. do more research about the specific plant for better result
@critical_awareness75872 жыл бұрын
Just makes it difficult to repot in the future. Rocks will come tumbling out with the plant, if its fragile, they could break some of it. Then you will have to sort rocks from soil. Doesn't really benefit the plant either, just gives you extra steps to do. There are much better ways to mix up your soil, than adding rocks. If you have rocks mixed in with your soil, they will definitely break the roots when repoting. Rocks are not the best to add to your potted plants in any form.
@KamilaTekin2 жыл бұрын
It wouldn’t but why would you want that? It will be harder for the plants to grow the roots through the rocks

Actually where i live we usually do it... it's ok and all my plants are healthy and haven't died yet so yeah.. We usually only use medium size river stones in the pot to cover the large drainage holes so that the soil won't pour out when we had to move the pot and watering the plants... The water can still flow out of the pot easily.. We only use 1to 4 stones in one pot depending on the type of drainage holes it has Edit: also i live in the tropics and some of my plants is a bit water sensitive since the weather had been insane....so i need to move my plants around every 3 days or so... I only need to move it like 1f to the left so the plant can be protected from the rain by my front porch's roof

@TheWonderpup62 жыл бұрын
@@lullabybaby1845 but it's not well known? This is literally the first time I've ever heard of people having issues with rocks in the bottom. I see it as- good drainage is the best. But if your using a pot with no drainage then a nice thick layer of rocks is better then no rocks. Sure the roots might travel down to the water (like what happens in nature) but that allows the water to pool at the bottom and the dirt on top to dry. That way the rest of the roots aren't sitting wet all the time like pots with no holes or rocks. After that it's just a matter of keeping track of water schedules instead of relying on the what the very top of the soil looks like. I take it as the rocks are a safety measure in case you overwater not a reservoir for you to fill.

This reminds me of when I took a plant and soil science class and the only reason that people use rocks is to help with their soil texture and rate of drainage however it should still have holes at the bottom for excess to drain through like always. If your plant needs more moisture in the soil use a more clay based soil, if they need a more dry and loose soil use a mixture of dirt and sand. I always make my own potting mixes because each plants needs can be different.

Totally agree! This was my absolute plant-life saver tip! Nursery pots with a nice pot over them is my key to keeping the plants healthy and avoiding root rot! I just drown them when I water them, then wait for some minutes to let the water flow through the nursery pot into the outer pot and remove the water afterwards. Sometimes I check again after some hours of new water is in the outer pot and remove it again.

My plant pot has a HUGE drainage hole, to the point the soil falls out of it actively. So i use big rocks at the very bottom to help support the soil as well as prevent it from getting out of the hole without making a mess. So rocks make sense if you have super large 1 cm circles as drainage holes instead of tiny little holes. Plus i align them in such a way that they form a dome around the hole, so the water gets out easily without the rocks blocking it

The rocks is to lift the inner pot up a bit, so if there gets water in the bottom, just the tips of the longest rots would touch it and not the soil standing in water. This method comes down to plant size your typical repotting method doesn't work with rot but if you put a small plant in a giant pot the rocks will act as drainage and encourage the roots to go down. I've had experience with this method and I hate it but it's my wife's favorite and she's grown some giant aloe in just a couple seasons using this method. Unfortunately we haven't successfully had a potted aloe survive more than 2winters so I guess the end result is put it in the ground when it needs repotting

This is why you put your pot with drain holes into decorative pot. At the bottom of decorative pot you keep stones or perlite. Having pot with holes in decorative pot is also not the good idea. The water from the plant will drain to the bottom of decorative one, so your roots still will be touching the water, since the pot with plant touches the bottom too.
