PART 2. - CLIP WHY I BOUGHT 17 ENFIELDS
• WHY I BOUGHT 17 ROYAL ...
8 years and 17 royal Enfield motorcycles later I do a review on what I think were the best and the worst of the classic 500 singles plus show my old Continental GT and the Himalayan too. Then take a look at my interceptor 650
The c5 classic is a great fun bike to ride too.
Even do a mini review and take a look at my latest the 650
Interceptor in Glitter and dust.
You see the limited editions in the Pegasus and the despatch models.

Hi Warro, I'm a returning rider after a 30 year layoff and have bought 3 bikes within 18 months,(my wife thinks I have gone nuts :) ) anyway I have a 650 interceptor in the Orange Crush and I love it. Despite the problems with your first Royal Enfield and subsequent RE bikes you kept buying that brand, 10 out of 10 for persistence and brand loyalty (can't say I would have done the same). I bought a demonstrator Royal Enfield recently so I was particularly interested in your advise to stay away from them. So far mine has been great but I haven't had it very long. A fair collection of enfieds you've owned. My first one was a secondhand 2009 machismo bullet I bought in India and done 8 & half months (9000km) around India with the wife on the back and rucksacks on the side. Great adventure and the bike didn't miss a beat. Tried to bring back to aus but customs wouldn't have none of it. Currently riding the interceptor 650 and love it. My dad got an original RE 1962 250cc clipper that I've got my eye on. Also looking for a pre 2011 500 single. Keep up the good work, you've helped me out on a couple decisions regarding the interceptor. Kind regards, Gary

@ridewithwarro
@ridewithwarro 4 жыл бұрын
when I had my 535 I ran the ngk bpr6es in it. had no problems. if you do you can try heat range one either side. don't waste money on the iridium either-I used them many times no difference and this is much cheaper too. no need to gap either. do a 200 mile run then pull and check it also a good move is to remove the metal plug cap and replace it with a ngk cap too.

@@ridewithwarro thanks. What petrol do you run your 500s on? I don't know if I'm imagining, but when I ran my continental 535 on 95 or 98 octane, it feels worse then on 91. To me it feels like it idles and runs smoother on the 91. Am I imagining things?

17 x $6000 = maybe $112,000 USD for these bikes; are we talking Jay Leno money here? SIngles will always shake some, but tolerance to vibration is highly individual. I haven't found a single yet that (to me) was too unpleasant to ride. For that distinction try a Harley Sportster. The UCE's are skinny but not particularly light. I think R.E. did pretty well all things considered. The new UCE design used essentially the same motorcycle and swapped tanks, seats & wheels to generate many variants. The only deviation (maybe) is the new "Trials" UCE, Road tests I've seen so far seem to place it in the "scrambler" category, certainly not the dirt bike arena. The new 6 speed 650 twins seem to be a VERY nice generalized design. An Interceptor would be a good place to stop. Maybe an extra set of "adventure bike" tires & wheels, plus an aluminum skid plate, and possibly some soft luggage and you'd have it all. The Japanese really have it covered if you crave absolute performance; a Hayabusa or ZX12 at 185 MPH out of the box is life altering. Plus, they corner reasonably well. But the Interceptor or Continental is way easier to live with. Shipping your bike to the Isle of Man for Speed Week or the Vintage Races would be a real hoot, and might be a money saver too. Riding your bike to dust to me is more rewarding than collecting the series. In my misspent youth in a motorcycle shop we had a handful of distance riders come through, guys with 45,000 - 80,000 miles on their 5 year old machines. Most of us folks put maybe 1,000 - 3,000 miles in a good year. Hitchcocks has very conveniently allowed me to keep my old '99 Iron Barrel 500 Bullets running (my "safety bikes" - 4 hours wrenching to 1 hour riding) , and they are also a great source of Enfield accessories for R.E.'s whole range. I'd like to see videos of you circumnavigating Australia & Tasmania, & maybe New Zealand. At 17 bikes you're certainly not short of spare change, and I believe you'd really like Vintage week at the IoM. Treat yourself to a once in a lifetime experience and take your own machine for a few laps of that venerable Island course. Unlike me, you already know how to ride on the proper side of the road...

at the moment I only have 2 bikes-the new interceptor and the new honda crf250l but saying that I have bought 30 new bikes in total in the past 8 years plus a few cars too...lol looking back now ive wasted a fair bit of cash with the buy and sell program at roughly $3k per drop on the bikes. the interceptors I think are the pick of the bikes at the moment and very reliable. in fact these interceptors are the only bikes I had not touched with a spanner in the enfield range from scratch. although the Himalayan I had looked promising too. the main trouble with enfields have been vibration and put down to bad or poor fitment of the crank. not all vibrate like say a Harley. these enfields are like no vibes -some vibes big vibes or f/ terrible. ive actually had 2 and only 2 which did not shake at all but saying that in the early '70 a friend of mine bought a 650 Yamaha twin new and I still remember that bike on the centre stand on idle with the rear tail light shaking violently...lol

@@ridewithwarro Hi Warro - glad to hear you're not funding the entire economy by yourself! Don't know about a buy 'n sell program on this side of the pond, pretty rapacious here. Maybe there is a lease program in the USA, but I've not enquired. Your experience with the Interceptor mirrors what I hear across the board. A six speed mated with a tractible engine & good chassis and relatively light too is a winning combination. A lot to be said for starting with a clean sheet of engineering paper. I have seen many custom built "scrambler" variants of the 650, so the chassis geometry apparently isn't lethal for mild offroad. Thanks for your efforts in sharing what you know. There is an aftermarket crank outboard bearing support plate available for the 500 UCEs that's supposed to tame the real shakers; I'd look into it if I had one. My old '99 Bullets run out of steam at 55-60, so that precludes a lot of shaking - at 22 BHP there's no point to pushing them hard. I was able to attend the IoM Vintage TT last year and highly recommend it. The vintage bikes were lapping the course at well over 100 MPH and hitting 160+ on the straightaways. The island is very user friendly, they've been at this a long time and do a very good job of it. I was especially impressed with the dual helicopters staged for medivac duty for the racers - maybe 5 minutes after you hit the ground you are headed to hospital. Commendable safety effort! The whole IoM trip is like inhabiting a 25 mile long motorcycle museum. I thoroughly enjoyed the museum at Jurby - 120 years of historic motorcycles & other vehicles inside a 2 story, 300' x 150' x 50' modern building - bring lots of megapixels. The course is ran on the regular IoM roads, so if a fellow had his own machine it would be quite the opportunity to get the visceral feel of the event. I was hoping to rent a Honda Grom or some such, but no luck. On the ferry over from Ireland we sat with a group of Kiwis who'd brought their bikes, so it's doable. The whole island is covered with vintage hardware that has been ridden from everywhere. I talked with a Swedish fellow who'd ridden his Nimbus from Sweden. Not like the USA where mostly "Trailer Queens" are putted around an event for style points. I chose the Vintage race because the hardware is more interesting to me. As a former desert racer, I know the "fast guys are fast" - the regular race saw 200 MPH on the straights... Thanks again for your efforts - AZ Utilitarian - Los Estadios Unidos!
