The Dodge Durango is a unicorn in America. It's the only mainstream three-row crossover that can tow more than 5,000 pounds. In fact, if you want to tow with a three row vehicle, the Dodge tows more than most three-row body-on-frame SUVs in America. Thanks to a 5.7L V8, rear wheel drive and wide tires the Durango is also a surprising amount of fun to drive. Is it the best three-row vehicle in America? No, but it was the right vehicle for me.

Pro tip - equalize the volume on your intro jingle and the rest of the video. The intro is regularly significantly louder than the rest of your content. I say this in love.

I bought a new Durango and really enjoy it. I’ve never had to take it to dealer. Just change oil, rotate tires and gas it up. High marks for FCA quality. The Durango handles more like a spots sedan. I’ve owned 14 Ford SUV and now I prefer Dodge. Great styling , large cargo capacity and rear wheel drive. Good review.

I love the Durango’s too, and they are very reliable. I FCA quality still isn’t the best and I would stay away from certain FCA products.

Great review. I purchased a 2019 GT a couple of weeks ago and thus far I'm very happy with it. I'm cheap so I didn't get the RT version which I initially second guessed. However, the V6 is surprisingly peppy. Otherwise it's been the perfect vehicle. I have a wife, a son and two large dogs (one of them is a huge Newfoundland) and needed an SUV that could comfortably accommodate everyone for a somewhat lengthy drive up to the lake on summer weekends. My previous vehicle was a Jeep Grand Cherokee and while it was an excellent SUV, it just wasn't quite big enough for a long drive with all five of us packed in. Aside from roominess, very impressed with the handling and performance of the vehicle. The rear wheel drive definitely contributes to the vehicle feeling more responsive and was in my opinion superior to the other vehicles I took out for a test drive (Traverse, Explorer). For anyone that wants an SUV on the larger side but doesn't want to pay the exorbitant price of a Tahoe, I'd recommend taking a long look at the Durango.

Alex, I subscribed to your channel because of this. I have a 2016 Citadel v6 myself and I can’t stop smiling every time I drive it. 40k miles and I’ve only needed to do 3 oil changes. This truck is solid and the most badass looking/sounding/driving of all the SUV.

I owned a 2000 Dodge Durango for 15 years, it was a wonderful vehicle and I miss it to this day. We had the transmission rebuilt at 130k miles. Other than that and the standard replacement of break pads, rotors and 1 hub replacement, it never gave us any major issues. The 4.7l motor ran like a champ the entire time we owned it. It was an amazing vehicle for my family.

I’m happy for you Alex. I’ve always felt the Durango to be an underdog (with Mercedes DNA) and so you pointed out intelligent reasons why this model is right for you. We had a previous generation Durango for 10 years and although it was a different architecture, it served us well. We replaced it with a 2013 8 Spd. 5.7L Ram 1500 Quad Cab 4x4 which for us once again has been great with just regular maintenance, great UConnect system, AWD transfer case and cylinder deactivation that recently help us achieve a round trip mpg from our city (Edmonton) through the Rocky Mountains with 2 kayaks in the box and luggage/gear in 2nd that was 26.5 (10.7 L/100 km).

I purchased the same exact model for my wife and we don’t tow. I just liked the looks, the presence on the road and how smooth it actually drives. Drove the vehicle from NJ to IL and it did well on gas, especially at speeds of 90 mph. 2 years owning it and not one issue.

I have a 15' Durango RT with the 5.7 and have about 37K miles on it. So far... so good. I bought it to tow my boat and I didn't want to buy a giant SUV. So exactly as Alex says. The towing is excellent and it really is a good value when you compare it to the competition. Cheers - from Miami.

Well so far so good. It's been almost 2 months with no issues. It is hands down the most enjoyable SUV to drive that we have owned. The drivetrain and handling is wonderful even with the base V6 that we opted for. Hopefully the long term reliability is there too. It will be hard to be much worse than the 2014 Pathfinder that preceded it. Something broke on that car every other week.

I have a 2016 Citadel v6. Loooovvveee this car. I have a grin every time I drive it. 40k miles and I’ve only needed oil change. My car sends me email on how it’s doing. It gets boring because it just tells me that everything is ok. Except for that one time the tire pressure got a little low. I want the SRT but it only comes in 6 passenger. I need 7 seats for my family of 7.

Excellent and interesting as usual, Alex. I think your review highlights a couple of points. First, there is no such thing as the "best" vehicle in any particular category. Individual needs and priorities make all the difference. Second, choosing a vehicle almost always means prioritizing specific features and being willing to accept some less desirable aspects of that choice. Kudos for your objectivity in analyzing yours.

I’m really impressed with the 3.6/ZF 8 speed combo. My last car search I test drove several and while the 3.6/8 speed isn’t the most tech savvy or torquey combination it seems always to deliver smooth power across the power band, with impressive stats. I regularly get 31 on the freeway with my 300 and the thing is over 4000lbs.

It's nice to see a car reviewer being objective on what he says. You take all things into consideration in your reviews, it may work for some it may not work for others instead of trying to make like everyone has to agree with your opinions. And you brought that idea to your own personal choice, even the Durango being an aging offering it doesn't mean it's that bad at all. (Alex, upload more to The Mountain Garden pls)

Contrast this glowing review of the 2018 Durango with the hammering he gave the recent Sequoia "dinosaur", primarily because the Sequoia has gone much too long without a complete redesign. We love our 2014 Sequoia, in large part because it tows really well even though the infotainment system doesn't whip out a decent espresso. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ftmYnNV60sDcmWQ.html

Alex, I've watched all your Durango reviews and it's no surprise you bought it. Your enthusiasm during the driving experience was obvious. In this age of watered down, fwd based, turbocharged lifted crossovers, the Durango is a breath of fresh air. Based on the Mercedes GL with an x frame, the Durango is a solid feeling and driving vehicle with the option for a traditional V8 and RWD. Sure, the other watered down fwd crossovers sell better (explorer, Highlander, etc), but the Durango has a feel and ride that none of those other appliances can touch or replicate. Great choice! This is the most underrated vehicle that FCA makes BY FAR. If it had a Jeep badge, it's sale would increase 3x.

I don't think the Durango is based on the Mercedes GL. It, and most all Chrsyler/Dodge offerings (minus the new Pacifica Minivan and Ram trucks) are based on an old Mercedes E-Class platform from 2 or 3 generations ago (circa early 2000s).

I cross shopped between a Highlander, Pilot, Durango and the Sorento, In the end. i went with the Sorento due to compact size, amazing refinement, and great dealer incentives. The highlander and Pilot was way more expensive (little dealer incentives as well) than the Sorento so they were out. It was between the Durango and the Sorento (both good incentives from the dealers). I love Durango so much but could not get it since it was so long that it would not fit in my single garage! In the end, it was your review of the Sorento that convinced me to get the Sorento.

Bought a 2020 Dodge Dakota GT AWD last weekend. The v6 is great! Also got the tow package. At 1230 miles, the fuel economy was 25mpg on I-5. From Lancaster to San Francisco. In a couple of days I will go down Skyline drive to Hwy 9. Down through Felton to Santa Cruz. Will head down hwy 1to hwy 46. Back over to the I-5 and back to Lancaster. So far the travel has been very comfortable. So much so, that I may drive it more than planed. I bought it to complement my wife's 2018 Ram 2500 Crewcab 4wd 6.7L Cummins. And my 2016 Ram 1500 Quadcab 4wd 3.0L Ecodiesel. The power is fine. I drove over hwy 152 Pacheco Pass with a very strong head wind. Speed Control was at 65mph, and the speed was 65mph all the way past Casa de Fruita.

Congrats on building your own house. We did that too. Literally. We dug the foundation and septic ourselves (with a rented back hoe) and everything from there on up was done by me and my wife. Bricks, framing, electric, plumbing, roofing, paint, the whole works. Also a three car detached garage and a small barn and a couple outbuildings. We did it all with a gnarly old 1965 GMC 3/4 ton long bed step side pickup (yep, step side long bed). We always laugh when someone tells us they "built their own house," only to find out that they had everything done by contractors. Oh, but they worked hard picking out the paint colors!

Congrats on the purchase! I bought a 2012 Citadel a few years back in a v6, 7 passenger configuration with every amenity minus the towing. I mainly chose the Durango for its looks, handling and family hauling capabilities. I also have a 13 Chrysler 300c with a HEMI that is my daily driver. My wife and I cannot justify upgrading our Rango but when we do, it will be for an 8 cylinder with Captains in the middle instead of the bench that we currently have in ours. I enjoy this vehicle that much (I'm also on my 2nd 300). However, I do wish the 3rd row were mechanically foldable as well as the arm rest utilizing the same soft touch as the 2nd row does (they can borrow from the GLS/MLS wagon from Mercedes). Further, it would be great to have heated/cooled cup holders in the front (they can borrow from Chrysler as in my 300c). Finally, a pano sunroom (they can borrow from the Chrysler 300 & Jeep Grand). FCA could easily implement these amenities into their Durango. The 3rd Gen Durango is a great crossover. It was engineered during the Chrysler/Mercedes era. The Grand Cherokee is a Mercedes ML wagon & the Durango is the GLS wagon. It offers comfort, style and versatility. I've used it several times now for massive grocery + department clothes shopping + Christmas tree on the room in addition to putting the 2nd & 3rd row down for transporting the purchase of a new hot water heater & building material for a new deck. Love my Durango.

Thumbs up Alex; I rate your presentation as a solid "A". The only thing keeping it from an "A+" is an omission that's fairly important for many; off road capability. The availability of the tried and true Selec-Trac II 2-speed transfer case together with the Brake Limited Differential feature makes this quite a capable off roader. All the while maintaining everything you want in a street-going AWD system; open differentials for fuel economy and AWD automatically on-demand when conditions are bad. Get rid of the silly lower front air dam for better approach angle, taller all terrain tires, and maybe the Rocky Road lift kit, and you're going where many Jeeps go. Also a convenient feature is the cap-less gas filling port. What a brilliant invention that was! Congrats on your purchase. Funny though; your earlier Durango review is what steered me into getting a black 2018 Citadel optioned almost identically to yours. I bought mine last October and I'm VERY VERY pleased with it. Keep the sunny side up my friend. One last comment. The R/T may very well rate a "B" in ride comfort, but the Citadel is an "A" imo.

Lots of space, the 3.7,4.7.5.7 great engine options, etc. I hope one day i can find something I love as much. This durango is nice. But, I like having a bench middle seat. I love that in floods, 32"of snow, and 10 years...never had a single major issue. maybe a couple of hick ups in the first year with sofeware flashes etc. but nothing will probably give me a sense of safety, and enjoyment like my Jeep Commander...

We thought about a Durango. Test drove the GT trim level. We bought a Honda instead. The dealer experience could not have been more opposite. We have a 2018 Ridgeline and could not be happier.

It's still a nice vehicle. Love the V8 option. I think at least FCA could give it a pano sunroof and maybe sliding / flip/fold 2nd row seats to keep it contemporary. And the upcoming redesigned Explorer will join it as a RWD based crossover, interesting matchup

Hey Alex, I'm between this and a ecoboost expedition. We have a camper that while is within my current Kia Borregos tow rating of 5,000 it doesn't feel comfortable behind the wheel. Love the channel keep up the good work.Nick

Still love my 14 Durango RT AWD! It really is the best Suv\Cuv available with the most capability, features and bold aggressive looks under 50-60k. And mine has not had any real issues in the 4 years I have had it other than numerous software updates. It is a total blast to drive! 0-60 in 5.7 secs is exactly what I get all the time too. That is pretty quick for a 3-row suv that weighs over 5k lbs! Yes it is faster than the Explorer Sport. I have raced a few. And its at least as fast as the Tahoe RST. Rear wheel biased AWD with a V8 is a great driving experience. Oh and I can use 87 octane gas just fine... FCA also offers a LIFETIME - Unlimited mileage warranty. Mopar Maxcare. I was able to get it for around $2k with a $100 deductibe. I'm set for life with my Durango!

Alex, you should review the more practical V6 Durango for once! Always raving about the V8s :D

That's because most people that have owned trucks and used them know that the V8 is by far the better choice of engine. They can live a long life without breaking down because the labor for the engine is spread out over more cylinders and that is also nice for towing, you can get much better performance. The V6 has to work much harder to do the same job, so they might get better millage with an empty truck but once you start to pull a bunch of weight, that V6 is a dog and is going to have problems much sooner than the V8 will. I had a Chevy van with a 305 V8 that lasted me 23 years and 273000 miles without breaking down, not once was I on the side of the road for anything, not even a flat tire, although that was mostly luck, the V8 is made for trucks, the V6 turbo seems like a good idea and can be for some, but for a real working truck, the V8 is the way to go.

It was designed with a lot of Mercedes input when Daimler-Chrysler was a thing, so I'm not surprised it's still competitive after 8 years, with the updates.

Yesterday I bought a new 2018 SXT Blacktop AWD for $35K out the door. Dealer trying to clear the lot. One thing I learned after buying it and reading the manual, and what the salesman didn't know, is that without the factory installed tow package this car will only tow 3500 lbs. Fortunately, that's pretty much the max we will tow, but I was partially drawn in by the promise of 6200 lbs. Oh well, still really like it.

Already watched all your review videos about Durango 👍 and I've been trying to get the best reviews about the mid size SUV's, thought about Pathfinder..explorer.santafe. etc. I think after researching and everything the Durango SUV got me in every way ,the look the interior the steering wheel the lights. I live in Europe and I have 2016 BMW X5M50D. Used to travel to the sun shine state ☀️🏖️🌊. And thought of buying a good SUV there .Mr Alex thanks for giving us the best reviews.. because of your review I'm gonna buy me and my family A Durango 👍😁

I have to admit it. Dodge’s center shifters are one of the best shifters I’ve ever seen. In some cars, the shifter is designed in a way in which you have to clench it in a sideways fist. Here you can shift with an upright fist. In my opinion I think that would be a more comfortable position for me if it is for anyone. I also like how it looks like a bottom of a golf club. I mean I don’t play golf, but I like the shape of it.
