When I was a kid, my grandma gave me her "Remington Quiet-Riter" typewriter she had used while working as a justice of the peace. It's so bulky and heavy, but it really got me into writing throughout high school, and eventually lead me to study writing in college. There's just something so great about the fact that you can't exactly take back what your fingers push into the paper, you just have to roll with it.

Being your most elderly subscriber, I learned to type on a manual typewriter, followed by the fancy IBM Selectrics with the ball, AND I took one of the very first "word processor" courses in Seattle. Those were some big herking machines that had equally large dot matrix printers. LOL. I remember quite clearly hitting 45 WPM in my high school typing class and winning a prize. That speed was considered excellent for a well-paid secretary. I hated typing - my Dad forced me to take it - and often lamented being good at something I did not like. But that skill opened many doors for me and who knew I'd be typing daily for the rest of my life. I am so glad I can type well now. Also, I collect vintage typewriters for their awesome beauty! I believe you will learn a lot by typing your writing. I actually ended up writing longhand on paper ala Steinbeck with fancy paper and pencils for the ambience of them. I'm almost 40, so when I was growing up we had a typewriter. I used it all the time to type stuff. We also had carbon paper so you could make multiple copies. There was just something so satisfying about the physical act of typing.

WOW... I have a close relative who was high school teacher and had a high end typewriter. I could never understand why he got so upset when the world was transitioning towards computer use, as well as when the inks started becoming impossible for him to continue purchasing... But after seeing THIS video, now it all makes sense why he was so upset, especially after being accustomed to using the typewriter for the majority of his career. All of the points you made were very very valid Ariel! Kinda makes me want to give one a try at some point in my life to have such an experience!

I am a typist who has used manual and electric typewriters for forty years. I find using manual portables and uprights very enjoyable. On the other hand, I can remember typists, especially manual typists, who absolutely hated typing and their manual typewriters. To them, typing was less preferable to galley slavery. So let's face it: Manual typing is work. It makes your fingers, hands, wrists and arms sore. It also taxes your concentration. Nothing goes in. It all flows out. It's easy to say, "Hey, I want one!!" after hearing wonderful stories about them, and seeing someone pile a stack of letters and numbers neatly on a piece of paper. What next? You see one you think is in reasonable shape. You buy it, you take it home. You type on it a few days. You find out how much work old school typing really is. You put it on a shelf, and there it sits until you decide to clear it out and then the whole cycle starts again. Not unlike one of those home gyms we've all bought and gotten rid of. This is the side of modern typing that doesn't get talked about. I see it happen. I also see happen that people amass collections of these beasts and just shelve them. Quite an expensive hobby just taking up real estate. Too bad there isn't a typewriter rental anywhere you can rent a manual to see if you'd like a typewriter. Hey!! Maybe there's a job opportunity for me and some other collectors out there.

I took type classes in high school over 40 years ago. I was never really good, but it gave me an advantage in the work place. When it came time to complete progress reports, inventory reports, generate invoices, and create inventory orders, my ability to type gave me the advantage over most of my co-workers. In my free time I have generated hundreds of pages of stories, journals, and essays for myself. A majority were generated on my computer keyboard, but some were written on a typewriter. I have owned about 20 typewriters over the years and have decided to now start a collection. I now have two working Smith Corona's that were both procured at yard sales. I have followed Phoenix Typewriter on KZfaq and have even been in his shop. I have dropped off several typewriters that needed repair and he told me he could use them for parts or repair. It has been a wonderful journey. When I saw the title of the video, "Why I Bought A Typewriter" my first thought was, "because it is the write thing to do". My typewriters bring me peace and a sense of accomplishment. I'm grateful for this post. Thank you for sharing with us. I will continue to follow.

Aww man, I'm sorry to hear you woke up to all that negativity on twitter Ariel. But glad to hear despite the sadness you were able to refocus on something you really love and care about. So cool that you can have two colours at once! Purple and pink would be really pretty. My dad had two typewriters. He had one similar to yours but it was sadly broken. And the second one was sort of digital =) I worked for a year after I finished my undergrad, and while it was pretty cool to work on a full-time schedule, I wasn't working in a field I cared for passionately. It didn't help that within the workplace, I had some peers who told me to accept the working world as is. It was really disheartening, and after 6 months of working, I decided I wanted to go for my Masters. I couldn't wait for school to start haha!

I have an Olivetti Underwood 21 typewriter. I actually got it after watching your typewriter keyboard video because I wanted to get back into writing. I love it, theres just something about typing on it that's cathartic. I've also heard that re-writing your entire draft word for word is a great way to edit, and that's basically what I've had to do since using a typewriter as my primary writing space.

This was the exact reason I bought a typewriter last year. It detaches you from sooo many distractions. Mine is a royal blue typewriter and actually has an exclamation point key! Also, the typewriter noise is just too good to resist! I would say get a record player as well, it seriously adds to the traditional author vibe! Puts you in an entirely new atmosphere. I have four typewriters, because they're so much fun! One is an Olympia with a cursive font. Two are IBM Selectrics with the interchangeable font balls (love them!) You go, girl- enjoy what you love!

I used to have 2 different typewriters back in the day: One being an electronic typewriter that came with a moniter from the late '80s/early '90s, so you can see what you're typing onscreen and on the paper and it had an autotype feature that acted like a printer (used to like watching the keys type by itself, lol). The other being your typical typewriter, which we used until the ink ran out and we fully moved onto desktop PCs.

A typewriter will always be great for labeling things and short writings. Great if you are a poet or short story writer. Great for notes and notices on bulletin boards or to family members when left on the refrigerator. Great video!

Donna Tartt puts her phone on a shelf far away from her (pretty sure it’s close to the ceiling) when she writes if you want to take some wisdom from a master. She only checks her phone like once a day to make sure there are no urgent things she needs to address but other than that when she starts writing a book she completely immerses herself in it. While Tartt handwrites her drafts, I think a typewriter is actually more efficient for me. I recently acquired one and I began to write and soon I had pages done. It’s far superior to typing on a computer and better than handwriting your manuscript. It’s so good for writers and, after all, some of the greatest classic work was done on typewriters... great choice! I’d love to see your work on display in my local bookstore, CARPE DIEM, Ariel!

It’s me again!!! Guess what-got me ANOTHER Underwood typewriter. This one’s a 1936 Underwood model 6 with an 18” carriage on it. I gotta few oddz n’ enz ya git yet, but I’ll have me a Jumbo machine with a monster carriage on it. It almost outweighs the house and I bet it’ll be fuuun ta use. I could write two letters side by side, that’s how big the carriage is. Letcha know when I got ‘er done and knocked into shape!!! Meantime I’ve been using my 1957 Royal RE electric upright typewriter. Bought it in 1989 for about five bucks, and yes, it has worked the entire time, and hasn’t given me very much trouble outside of a few maintenance issues (that particular model has a clunky reputation, but for an old Royal electric, it is exceptionally smooth).

Congratulations on acquiring that attractive Underwood 378 Ariel! I watched your wonderful video and thought back to when I bought my first manual typewriter, a little over a year ago. It was a 1980 Smith Corona Courier in baby blue. Like your's it has a snap on carrying shell and no "!" mark. Shortly after purchasing it, I started using it for my first draft, "stream of consciousness" writing. I credit a fellow named Joe Van Cleave who introduced me to this term. He has a fantastic video titled: Typewriter Video Series - Episode 57: Why Typewriters? Over the course of this year, I've acquired two other typewriters, a 1965 Smith Corona "Corsair" that is so small and compact, and once again is baby blue in color. It has a touch selector that actually works well. The other is a 1962 Royal "Futura" that a very kind person gave me as a gift. The '62 model is in exquisite shape, so much so that as I use it I can almost imagine typing away as I listen to President Kennedy's Rice University "Moon Speech," then suddenly find myself pulled forward 58 years to 2020. Ariel, I hope your enjoyment of your Underwood 378 is as delightful as mine has been. The one thing I find is that after typing with one of my machines, it's a rather "lifeless" sensory experience to go back to a flat plastic computer keyboard...but hey, the computer also helps with writing. As a kid my writing process was actually to write out everything by hand and then type it up later. I have somewhere a 300+ page handwritten manuscript. I did this for the reason you also mentioned, to get it all out first and then have this first stage of editing while typing it. I mainly use my laptop now but I did get a separate keyboard to make it harder for me to get distracted :D

The other day, I bought me a birthday present: a 1948 Underwood Rhythm Shift manual upright typewriter. It has pica type, weighs in at about 35 pounds, and is black as a Ford Model T (most typewriters were painted that color until the about 1949). It took just about everything I know to get it fixed. It looked like it had seen better days specially on the inside. As a general rule, Underwoods get very lonely-they break down when they’re uncared for. This one caught my eye because it was almost identical to a machine my mother had as a boy. I wish I had kept that one. But this one is a very nice typewriter. I call her Elizabeth. She and her sister typewriter Katrina, who is also black, cast iron-clad, and very heavy, but has elite type, will be in a place in the dining area known as “Underwood Corner,” designed for the older Underwood typers I lovingly seem to still pick up alongside of the Royals.

Hey Ariel! I'm 19 years old and I've wanted a typewriter since I was about 9 years old, and this past easter my grandparents gave me one! I was so happy with it and it is so helpful (I really want to write a book and my grandma was always very supportive of that idea and wanted to contribute to it!)! I ended up not using it for a while now, cause my grandmother was very sick, and she passed a couple of months ago, and I haven't been able to use it ever since cause it reminds me very deeply of her. I've wanted to get back to it cause it truly makes me happy but I haven't had the guts to do it yet, but your video made me very happy and gave me a little courage to go back to it! I absolutely loved this video, Ariel! :D I'm an aspiring author myself and both my boyfriend an I own typewriters (I've had mine for years, and his was a gift from me last summer), and we've been joking about how we should bring them to a coffee shop to write sometime, but thus far it hasn't happened. But I really liked your point about your typewriter forcing you to print, sort of, that it forces a physical object into your hands. I think that we sometimes forget just how much we actually write, and what it all adds up to, you know? Seeing words on a screen versus words on printed paper is a huge difference, and the latter is so much more satisfying, somehow.

I just purchased the same typewriter from an estate sale yesterday for $10 (USD). I want to write. So much. I have things to say and as much as I do, I'm scared and I'm distractable lol I can do something scared. I'm learning how to do that, but distraction? I struggle with clearing the space so I can actually write about the books I've read or observations of the world around me. I will clean, fix, and buy the ink tape, and write. The perfect happy medium, truly. I hit a point where I had to stop and prioritize plenty of times, but 2020 was the hardest brick wall to ever hit. I was so frustrated and over the blatant mistreatment and the gaslighting of society and even in my personal circle. 2022 was when I knew exactly what I wanted. I love how your reasons are so similar to mine. Even more so having found your now 6-year-old video at such a crucial time in my life. You're doing what you love and you have an end goal! Yes, I recently got a new job in the sales field and the store traffic was extremely slow. Although I was pretty good at the job the slow periods and the fact that it was heavily commission based made my life feel so boring and I was always in satisfied. It ultimately made me reprioritize and get back into writing as well, as my end goal is to write. I then started using my free time at work for writing! I ended up self publishing a short ebook in turn. And I too bought a typewriter!!! That helped a whole lot, I got it from the thrift store. It’s a Smith Corona electric one I don’t know the exact model but it’s extremely heavy and came with a case as well!

I just LOVE your videos. ❤ You always inspire me so much and I love seeing how excited you get over everything that you do. 😊 I am also an aspiring writer who has been struggling with writing. And I have also been wanted a typewriter. And now I want one even more. Lol. I would lobe to get to the point where I'm writing forst drafts on the typewriter then transcibing them onto my computer and doing the rest of the drafts on the computer. I found a typewriter at goodwill he's an Olympia and I love this little simple thing. He's getting cleaned currently since the last owner didn't do a good job of maintaining it. But for the 2 days, I had him I been writing entries of my day and it so amazing having something tangible thing to read and write.

I named my old Smith-Corona (purchased in 1991 from a church basement sale for $6) Trilobite. I wrote poetry, plays, short stories, and papers on the thing for my college years. I parted with it for a few dollars last month during a yard sale. Later, I picked up a 1963 Hermes 3000, used the hell out of it for a while, and now it sits in its atomic-age lime green case in front of my tabletop games library. (Never did get around to naming it though. Perhaps I will one day. Need to think of a perfect name first.) Enjoy yours! A mechanical typewriter can be an elegant way to bang out prose (or the occasional "ASCII"-art, heh). I'd imagine myself as an explorer writing from the future, or from the distant past. I put pictures (ironically, some of which were scanned directly from old LIFE magazines and printed on laser-printers) all over my desk in my dorm of folk like Dorothy Kilgallen, Ray Bradbury, Harlan Ellison, and bunch of appealing visual art for atmosphere.

OMG! I just sent that exact typewriter back to the person I ordered it from. It was beautiful on his site on Ebay. Got a great price but it came in damaged. We corresponded with each other and I am going to get a refund plus the shipping. I was so sad because it was like brand new. We had a great communications during this time. That is a great typewriter. The Olivetti Underwood 378. I even ordered a new ribbon which I received a couple of days ago. Looks like I won't be able to use it now. I collect typewriters. This was the first one that I had to send back. I only use typewriters. I've been typing ever since I was 16. I learned in High School when I took a typing class just to meet girls. It worked too! I was in a class with 30 girls and I was the only boy. I'm going to be 73 this August and I still type. I don't do "facebook", twitter or any other social media communications. I either call or type to people. Typewriters are great. Gives you time to think before you move your fingers. I only use manual. No distraction from a motor running from the electric typewriters. People go through many computers in their life, typewriters go through many people. I have typewriters dating back from 1953. I am partial to Smith Corona Typewriters from the 50's. Good luck Ariel. Honestly, I did not think typewriters were even being manufactured anymore! I am old, so I learned to type on an electric typewriter. I love and miss the feel and sound of the keys. And now you experience the singular joy of ripping a piece of paper out, crumpling it, and tossing it in the trash! As much as I adore computers and would never want to go back to typewriters on a regular basis, I sure do miss that.

When I was a kid I was OBSESSED with being Kit Kittredge so when I was 9 I asked for a typewriter for Christmas. Best Christmas EVER. I used to write "news reports" on it. It is enormous and really old and unbelievably heavy and doesn't work very well anymore but i love looking at it.

Hello! It’s me again!! I’m here to tell you about my latest underwood toy. It’s a 1950 Underwood SX 100 upright Italics printer!! I was told she was exported to Germany, and then brought back when her owner moved to the U.S.. Took me several days to put her in tune, but I did it!! Underwood uprights of old if you don’t pay them attention, they freeeeze!! A lot of elbow grease goes into their repairs. But like the Underwood 978, this machine does two things very well: Be heavy and write. It weighs 35 pounds and types in Italics.

I saw it with my studying sessions: no library, no shutting the internet down could help me if I didn't want to study, only staying focused and shutting out the unimportant things has (and does). and also be trained day after day, so that it wouldn't be as difficult as at the beginning. keep it up, I'm sure you're gonna shine bright.

I have a very similar one, with the black and red ribbon (originally), although I DO have the keys for 1, !, and accents on it (French keyboard), a Brother Activator 800T from 1980, Got it for 13$ at Value Village and it is in amazing shape. I absolutely LOVE to type on it, the sound, the feedback from the keys, the "ding!" at the end of the line. I also have an old Underwood that weighs a TON, used to belong to my grandma, it is in a rougher shape and currently only serves as decoration. But I totally understand the attraction, one of the main goals I have in life is to get a book published, whatever it is. I am far from it, only got a couple of short stories under my belt but it is going to happen. Hope you're well along on yours!

I used to have a typewriter, now it's in the attic. All the positives you mentioned are great, but mine was from the past, so the keys were super difficult to press, and the ink tapes couldn't be replaced and stuff like that. It was lovely to write without distractions, but it just didn't pan out. Your typewriter seems like a really good, modern tool. (Also it's so pretty!) Hope you have fun writing!

It's gorgeous! I have a typewriter that is rather old so it does get stuck on a few keys but it's one of my favourite things ever! I love the sound of it more than anything - it gives writing more weight and meaning for me because each word is permanent and much more intentional.

Have many typewriters like two Royal 10s two Underwood a foldable corona. And many others I can't remember, I'm currently working on a sci-fi story and going to finish it up on my Oliver 9 typewriter. Just had the platen recovered.😀 still waiting on it in the mail. Wonderful explanation of why to use a typewriter. Good choice with a manual machine versus electric. It never turns off, you can leave a thought on the page, come back in a week and it will be there. Also, no delete key, no wondering how you phrased something a few versions ago, you have a physical copy. Love the colors on that machine as well. I have a typewriter that was my grandfather's! I keep meaning to get a new ink ribbon for it and use it, but for the moment it just sits on my shelf and looks fancy. It's an older Underwood with huge bulky metal framing. Weighs a ton!

I wish you every success in your writing. My best mates gave me a 1966 Remington Monarch for Christmas so I look forward to seeing how it will change my writing practise. I remember the days before PCs when I had so much more productivity!

I now have a drawer which is full of printed uni presentations I don't need any more and on whose back I wrote some stuff with my Olympia. It is so satisfying to open it and see all the stuff, similar to having another cupboard full of notebook filled with stories. But the typewriter is a little more organized.

I have an Underwood Olivetti Studio 44. It is lovely. When you have a beautiful piece of machine you feel like bragging about it. I am glad that you are enjoying your typewriter and you are so on point when you said you need something for writing that has nothing to do with the internet. I totally agree with you. I'm sorry you had to spend your time dealing with online negativity. I'll never understand why people feel the need to bash other people's opinions that don't constrict theirs. I really enjoy getting to hear your thoughts and opinions here on KZfaq and elsewhere. Also, I love your new typewriter! I had one as a child and always thought they were fascinating. And the Underwood 378 is gorgeous -- nice simple color scheme and a slim carrying case built-in! Typewriters help people like me who tend to be overly wordy. Knowing that you're using a finite resource (ink spools and physical paper) helps give that little push to really THINK about what you want to put down on paper. On a laptop, I can just write and write, and then at the end, I can just select it all and with the push of a button, it's gone! With a typewriter, I have a physical representation of the time and effort I put into any given page. It makes me value my work more, and lets me be more decisive in what I want to keep and what I don't. Hope to see and hear more about your experience with your new typewriter in the coming future. okay, it has been a few days since I've watched this and I keep thinking about it. This is a FANTASTIC video, and has made me realise that I have literally no reason to not buy a typewriter - I've wanted one literally since I first laid eyes on one, they are so ridiculously cheap and I have a birthday in literally a week! Like what am I doing, why have I not bought one yet?? I really needed this as a kick up the butt , and now im going to (finally) go get a typewriter myself.

I once had a typewriter and my father threw it away. it was devastating and now I miss it soo much. I need to buy a typewriter it will really help me so much. Writing with typewriter has been so much fun for me, it was a satisfying experience I was really able to express my feelings. Now I want to revive that happiness.

Really cool typewriter. I original write snailmail to penpals and when I started out I was already into fountain pens. Still use them to this day but sometime near the holidays last year I decided to finally buy a typewriter. My second typewriter I ever owned, a 1947 Royal Quiet DeLuxe. Only used it a few week and then left it in storage until a week ago I took it back out because I was selling it for some extra money. Leaving it out I got curious if the ink was still good and one thing lead to another. I sold it and upgraded to a travel typewriter instead, a 1969 Royal Century. Just got it today and I have to say that the typewriter bug truly bit me once again. They’re just fun and interesting machines. I feel like this generation we are just so spoiled with all this technology that it creates this cloud now and again. Stepping away from a screen is liberating at times. Just me, the paper and the sounds of click, clack, bing! It really gets me to think what to write in my letters.
