I bought a base model M1 6 days ago. I really like it. This is my first time using an apple product. I do mostly web browsing, legal research, and MS Word. Meaning I do pretty basic stuff and because of this, I believe I represent the majority of ordinary users. This machine works absolutely fine and smooth. No regrets and I saved money too. Worth every bang for the buck for me.

Thanks for this video. I went for the M1, 8 core, 8 GPU, 2 TB refurbished. Saved a good bit plus another discount to save even more. One of my favorite Mac computers, good battery life and the sound is crazy. Almost surround sound. Bought this in Oct 22, picked up a Studio Ultra base model and Nano texture Studio display, VESA with both being refurbished. Way more tech than I need really but going refurbished and my discount I saved around $1250. That includes Apple care based on refurb vs new. Now my oldest Apple product is my iPhone 12 Pro Max. We'll see what the iPhone 15 brings to the table.

Totally agree. I bought my base M1 MBA when it launched. I love it. It's my fav piece of tech. Mostly program on it with Xcode, PyCharm, etc. Some light graphics with Affinity Designer.

That's not a "lesser pixel density" which is pixels/area, but lesser pixels merely due to a smaller screen. I like a maxxed out screen though, using all of material space instead of blackening it out.

Hi Saad, just bought the basic model (A2337) in Malaysia for the equivalent of SAR14,810. Time will tell if I was being 'pennywise but pound foolish'. I actually was ready to buy the 14" Powerbook (didn't have my specs) or even the 16" (out of stock). But they were 2-2.5X the price. I will experiment seeing if this is good enough for pubIishing an online newsletter with some photos. I am willing to buy an external SSD for data.

Nice one. Just bought the M1 for £830, base model. First time moving to Mac system. Hope its as good as everyone says it is.

I'm not a heavy user myself, but I needed a reliable machine for work. Tried the M2 Air but the non-wedge shape for the typing experience you mentioned was a dealbreaker for the M2. Also I don't need a lot of space, but I actually getting the M2 with 256GB will be a great downgrade on the SSD performance due to the one chip vs 2 chips combo on the M1. So yeah, you are right, for basic task and needs the base model M1 is a really good option. About the 8GB memory on the base model: I was a PC user for a long time with 16GB of ram, on the PC side 8GB was really hard to recommend these days. But on the M1 side: I was actually surprised how efficient is this little machine with 8GB of ram. On my typical workload it doesn't event bother to use the swap, but the highest swap usage I saw was around 1,2GB and the system was still snappy. So don't worry with the 8GB, go with the base model like me. But if you are a tab hoarder, heavy PS user with big files, or planning to edit 4K60FPS video you should consider the 16GB upgrade (or even a MBP).

I think the Air 2 is over priced for what it is. It’s annoying you got to buy adapters for it to use a usb stick and sd card reader when already you’ve spent out a lot already for this.

Very good analysis. I had to recommend an M1 over an M2 for a friend recently. You can get a discounted M1 with 16GB ram and 1TB drive for less than the base model M2 (8GB/256GB).

Well, I don't know about you guys in the US, but in EU the cost of an M2 Air is not that described above. You can buy an M1 at about 980 euros -sometimes less than that- but the M2 is currently stuck at 1599 euros. So for an average user as my self, this means I can buy also an iPad Pro with the same amount of money. Let this be also part of the discussion.

What do you think about the overheating problem on the M2 MBA? I currently own both M1 and M2 MBA, and I agree that perhaps for most people the M1 is the better choice. The M2 seems to get really hot pretty quick, I never experienced that with the M1. I also agree with the speakers being better on the M1.

If you're a typcal user, the M1 Air will give you better SSD performance, better sound, better heat disappation (with a better heat sink) and a better typing experience, all for up to $1000 less. If you're a power user, than the 14" Mac Book Pro is nearly the same price as a similarly specced M2 Air and has a better screen, much better sound, more slots, better cooling and overall better performance. It also looks nearly the same, and is only slightly larger and heavier. I don't really see a good case for buying an M2 Air.

Well the M1 MacBook Air is the best for me since I purchased it back in March to replace my iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2014) with 2TB SSD storage. I now have a MacBook Air M1 chip with 8‑core CPU, 7‑core GPU, 16‑core Neural Engine, 16GB unified memory, 2TB SSD storage with black 27-inch LG 5K monitor on black VESA desk mount arm. M1 MacBook Air has all the power most normals will ever need. Also do not see it overheating. Highest temperature at this time is 43 degrees celsius while watching this KZfaq clip which is what I do most of the time these days. Along with eMail, and web browsing. My hope is that Apple keeps the Jony, and Steve MacBook Air design around as a SE entry level $ 999.00 version of the MacBook Air. Just keep it with the previous version M series SOC for normals who just do things like eMail, surf the web, and watch your KZfaq type clips.

I'm a college student, and I got the M2 a couple of days ago. Let me say that I don't regret my decision even after watching this video. I'm a heavy user, and I practically abuse my computer by opening loads of programs simultaneously or working constantly for hours on it. Of course, before buying my computer, I also consulted a couple of Apple specialists and considered my options so I could make the right decision. Despite M1 being cheaper, M2 was a far better option for me. However, one of the main reasons I choose M2 is because of the MacSafe port, which M1 doesn't have. Anyways, M2 is a beautiful computer and if you can afford it, I think you should go for it. I previously had Macbook air from 2015, and this M2 was a significant upgrade from it and I can tell just by using it. Of course, if you are getting a Macbook air for the first time and you are more of an average user, M1 would do the job too because it's an excellent computer too.

My question is: how long it will be manteined? How many OS it will see? If in 2023 I buy a 2020 laptop it will stand until 2028?

if some absolutely loves having a 1080p camera instead of a 720p one, let me change your mind, if you use google meet in any meetings, your webcam is capped at 720 and if you like the extra image processing, in macOS ventura you can use your iPhone as a webcam instead which eliminates the point of even having that upgrade, anyways amazing video. i have collected my cash and am ready to go today and buy myself an M1 MBA for $800 (the battery cycles are only 64 with health at 96%) so that is good for a saving of $200 that i can spend elsewhere or on my needs.

I bought M1 Air as there was enough price difference compared to performance difference. Bought it in sale at 10% discount using credit card, got it at the price of i5 12th gen Dell Windows laptop. I think this is the biggest saving and smartest investment of my life.

You forgot to mention the most important part when comparing! The base model M1 is faster than the base model M2 because Apple went with a slower/cheaper SSD on the base model M2. With the system on a chip design, the slower SSD’s performance on the M2 limits the overall speed and benchmark tests show that the base M1 is faster. Does it matter? If you want the most bang for your buck and you’re buying the base model, YES!

Because of this video, i decided to buy an 2nd hand M1 macbook air posted on facebook for only 667 with only 5 battery cycle counts and applw warranty expiration in July. The best steal!
