Why I Bought the SuperECO Autopilot - Decision and comparison to Garmin GMC 507 & Bendix King XCruze

As my flying needs have changed, I had a tough decision to make on which Autopilot I should purchase and install in my RV-6A. Follow along as I discuss the various options and explain why I chose the Aircraft Automation SuperECO autopilot system for my plane. I will talk through the features of the SuperECO that mattered the most to me, and also show you an unboxing of the product as I received it.

I mounted a Trio unit, older style, went that way due cost. The Trio is an underrated A/P, Garmin tends to have a real cult following which kinda keeps the other manufacturers pushed down!

I definitely respect that opinion, and a year ago I would have said the same thing. My flying has changed though, and I now find longer trips much more enjoyable. The RV is pretty sensitive, especially in pitch. This makes it a joy to fly around in, but on a long flight over California Central Valley, the SuperECO allows me to relax, and focus on other things than just managing altitude and bank. The fact that I get a great PFD as well is a fantastic bonus. I think it is a great product. As my videos attest.

May I add a contrarian opinion? I’m former AF pilot and current airline pilot, I would suggest not installing an AP on a GA plane. What’s the point of having a fun plane and droning in it? It’s like using the cruise control on a high end sports car. Save your money, ask for a 1000’ block altitude and trim up and fly. Isn’t that what you bought a small plane for? To FLY it? I know an AP is a big fad now in GA but it’s really counter to what makes GA flying great. JMHO.

I see your autopilot has option for rudder trim. Did you select it as an option or did they just ship it to you with it. That rudder trim cost $250 and that is the DB9 port in the bottom. And you still have to pay 400 plus for the trim tab so I see you did not get the trim tab but did you order the rudder trim port?

I didn’t need that option so I didn’t include it in my purchase. I am not sure how it integrates.
