Why I Catch 3X More Bass on Deep Diving Crankbaits Than You

Deep diving crankbaits are probably my favorite fishing lure to catch bass on in the summertime, but I know a lot of people struggle to catch fish on them. One of the main reasons for this is their retrieve. As a Deep Diving Crankbait addict, I’ve developed my own special retrieve that will help put a lot more bass in the boat and keep you less hung up. In this video, I share this retrieve and tips on the best gear ratio reel to use when fishing deep diving crankbaits. Hope you enjoy!

As a kayak angler I will often troll a crank bait from place to place as I move to another spot and have been amazed at how many bites I've gotten towards the end of my move as I'm really trying to just reel it in. I've never considered just fishing it in general very fast.

The full spool picks up more line per turn. The ratio is the same but inches per turn is lower with a half spool because of the smaller circumference. If the circumference of a half full spool is 2 inches but a full spool is 2.5 inches, with a 5:1 ratio you get 10" of line per handle turn (5*2=10) at half spool versus 12.5 inches of line per handle turn (5*2.5=12.5) with a full spool. I've started to pay closer attention to inches per turn vs gear ratio alone.

Gear ratio isn't inches. For instance. A 5:1 gear ratio reel indicates for every single turn of the handle the spool will spin 5 times. Based on spool diameter your IPT or inches per turn can vary. Most manufacturers label IPT now or at least the reels i use. Both are important but preferences vary based on user. For deep cranking i prefer the 5:1 to 6:4 range depending on the lure.

Excellent information Jonny! I appreciate you taking the time in making these videos to help others improve their bass fishing skills. I recently purchased a Quantum KVD Smoke 6.1:1 reel with a St. Croix Premier 7’ MH moderate action crank bait rod specifically for fishing crank baits. I’m using Seaguar 12 lb fluorocarbon. I’ve caught a few bass on crank baits in the 30+ years that I’ve been bass fishing, but I’ve never really used them a lot. I’m more of a jig and worm fisherman. After watching your videos I’ve decided to try new techniques to help me catch more fish. There is one spot on the reservoir I fish that has a ton of rip rap packed tightly together that runs from the shoreline down to approximately 12’ deep. From there it drops off to 20’+ deep. This is a spot where I know there are huge bass, but it is almost impossible to fish a jig or worm without constantly getting hung up and breaking off. I’m going to try using a crank bait in the manner that you describe in this video.

Experament: Wrap a string around a pencil and see how long it takes to wind on there. Now tie it around bottle and see how much faster u can wrap it. Definitely changes the ratio

A single wrap of line around a 1” dia. spool equals 3.14”. If the spool is only half full, then that wrap is only half as long. A full spool gives you MORE line take-up per handle turn than a spool that’s only half as full. It’s easy to understand, especially when spooling your reels with new line.

Credit where credit's due: I sat through this video specifically to see what you had to say regarding retrieve ratios of various reels and the effect it has on the diving of a crankbait. It's a subject that a lot of "pros" ignore, probably because they don't know. The reel ratio determines the distance a crankbait will cover with each turn of the handle and every crankbait has a threshold beyond which it no longer dives and it behaves erratically. Knowing that threshold (trial and error) makes the particular crankbait most effective. David Fritts has retrieve ratios down to a science. He says, "There's no retrievable (crank) bait that needs to be on those high-speed reels". I believe he's right. As to retrieve ratio and power, it's a mathamatical relationship between the drive gear size and that of the driven gear. A 3:1 ratio creates more power (but less speed) than a 7:1 ratio.
@cgyotoku
@cgyotoku 5 жыл бұрын
With regard to your question about a full spool versus a low spool and gear ratio. I'm sure you understand that it doesn't change the gear ratio, your reel is still 5:1. But a full spool means you will be retrieving more line per handle turn since the circumference of the spool is larger. With that said, it will actually be easier and take less force to reel in a low filled spool, but you will also be retrieving less line per turn.

A reel has what gear ratio that is built into the gearing (high, low, or in-between). Yet when one does not fill a spool completely with line of whatever sort, the angler is not maximizing the number of inches that the gear ratio can retrieve in one turn of the reel handle. Basically, you are short-changing yourself with the amount of line you are retrieving with one turn of the reel handle, all things considered, compared to having a full spool of line, with a greater diameter to achieve maximum line retrieval.

Increasing the amount of line on the reel increases the speed of your retrieve. It effectively makes your "spool" thicker, by adding more line to the spool. This makes you retrieve more line per rotation of the spool.

I agree, absolutely would be better with a faster reel but I personally don't go over 6.3:1 for 15+ ft deep. I understand what he is saying about the lower ratios having more power but cranking that fast is impossible to maintain with the deep divers especially if you're cranking on it for hours. Changing retrieve rates every couple of casts IMO is much better rather than just steadily burning (unless you want that forearm pump, you know, for the gains).

Curious.. do you burn like DT 6/10 .. rock crawlers.. 3xd. Smaller CBs as well or slow down with those? Typical colder water CBs

Are you referring to his latest one where he recommends 5 and 6 gear ratio reels for deep divers, or did I miss one? Seems like the affordable ones all suck, so it's impossible to know what ones are worth the money.

More line on the spool doesn't change the gear ratio it only changes the amount of line retrieved. The more line on the spool, the more line pulled in because the circumference of the spool is increased.
