It's great to hear that it is a career that welcomes that balance of thinking and feeling. The continued learning definitely appeals too ☯️

Thanks for the comment, yes lots of emphasis put on feeling in the training for example, but it’s definitely the combination of the two that’s the most helpful I think

Great video, John-Paul. So much of this rings true with me. I have to feign interest at work in exchange for money. There's nothing wrong exactly but definitely missing something. Very helpful video.

Thanks for saying Richard and really glad you found it helpful. Amazing how we can get so used to doing that isn't it, often I think because we haven't experienced an alternative. Hope things are going well for you.

Thank you. This was very helpful. I’m currently in the legal field and looking to make the switch, myself. I have undergraduate degrees in both fields, but would obviously need more accreditation to practice therapy. I’ve just begun looking into what-all that entails and how to go about attaining it, hence my searching this type of content. But I’d love to connect for more guidance, if you’re open to that. Thank you again for sharing!

I am currently working in mental health, and I am looking at graduate school (to be a licensed psychologist) but I have also always enjoyed law, (Indigenous advocacy law) and have been deliberating law school as well. I am curious if having a private law firm with distinct boundaries that balance work/ family life be beneficial? I work in more rural areas and will not ever live in an urban setting (I don't like cities- and live on a ranch). I am so thankful to have stumbled upon this video in my research. (Ideally, I want to work remotely/ have a private practice, working with Indigenous communities one-on-one and teletherapy as well). thank you

Hi there, thanks for your comments and for what you say about the video, I really appreciate it. The plan you have sounds amazing to me, seems like you know what you love and enjoy and have in mind how you can shape life around it. I think it was definitely for me the corporate environment that didn't suit me as well as it might have done and certainly not in the way that I'm able to live life now. Working remotely and telehealth is, as you can imagine, widespread now and there are plenty of practitioners I know who only work online and it seems to work very well for them. The areas you want to work in sound fascinating to me and I really wish you all the best with it. Let me know how it goes if you'd like : )

Hi, I love your content and you have persuaded me to think deeply about changing careers after getting my MA in heritage management. (had a coming to jesus moment when i did a lot of mental health based projects for museums) I think i would truly only be happy in life/work by being a therapist, but i'm very worried in terms of job security and how hard it is to establish my own private practice. I really want to go down this path, but i'm hesitant to comit to the training for it incase i find myself struggling to make a living from it. Any advice or insight on this would be greatly appreciated, thanks.:)

Hi there, thanks for your comments, I really appreciate what you say, it's great to hear. I do understand the worries about being able to make a good income from private practice and working for yourself, as it doesn't necessarily have the security of being employed. I've always trusted that if I love something and am interested it, I'll probably be good at it, whatever that might mean in this context, and that it'll therefore work out in terms of building a successful business. Therapy is also of potentially significant value to others as well. Of course, no one can predict the economic climate etc and lots of other things which will directly impact clients coming through, so no one can say exactly what you might earn. That'll also depend on how many hours you want to see clients for and how much you're able to charge in your local area. As I say though, as challenging as it can be sometimes, I've more often than not trusted it will work out, done what I can to achieve that and thankfully it has.

Ive just found your channel John-Paul and its been great food for thought as I consider a career change into therapy. Any tips for evaluating whether someone should pursue counselling or pschotherapy? Im in NZ and a masters of counselling is 2 years full time, vs psychotherapy which is 1 year full time diploma and then a 2 years master degree. Also any thoughts on inperson vs online degrees? There are two masters of counselling where i live- one is completely online (attractive as i have children so reducing my commuting is always a bonus), the other in person lectures a ways away from my home. Presumably people study the online degree but i wonder if id be missing out on that direct group connection, especially given the nature of the therapy work post graduating. The psychotherapy degree would be inperson as well. Thanks for your informative videos!

Hi there, thanks for your comments on the videos and channel, it’s great to hear they’ve been helpful and I’m grateful for you saying. In terms of your first question and counselling or psychotherapy, I think from a practical point of view for clients there’s probably not much difference, as most practitioners in the UK actually just call themselves therapists. It’s obviously a very personal decision, but I chose to go down the psychotherapy route because I wanted the training to be as thorough and in-depth as it could be. Of course, it doesn’t mean that anyone is any better as a therapist because they’ve studied for longer, it was actually more for myself. I can really see if cost is an issue and someone wants to get started more quickly why they would go for a counselling qualification. The last thing I’d say on the above is also that in the UK something has been introduced by the regulatory bodies, which means it will matter much more what you studied and the nature of your training. I don’t know if there are plans to do this in NZ too at any point? Whether you studied to be a counsellor or psychotherapist does become more significant with this system. As far as online or in person, again, it’s very personal, but I think I’d prefer an ‘in person’ experience myself. It’s just that online we may not get as much of the non-verbal communication and sense of community for example. Again though, I can see that if it’s the difference between pursuing the career and not, why someone go ahead and do online. It works well enough I’m sure. Let me know if there’s anything else. If not, I do really wish you all the best with your continued journey and thanks again for commenting, John-Paul

@JohnPaulDaviesTTP thank you so much for taking the time to respond. You've given me some ideas to ponder over, and I'll definitely follow up with the appropriate board to understand if there are any plans to further regulate the separation between psychotherapist a d counsellor. Many thanks, and I look forward to future videos!

Hi Paul! This video is enlightening. I'm a software developer trying to figure out a non corporate career. Could you please elaborate on how you decided if psychology is something you'd like and how did you actually make the switch? Thanks a lot!

Hi there, glad you found the video enlightening and thanks for saying, I appreciate it. I decided that psychotherapy was what I wanted to through a combination of being in therapy and then doing a foundation year In counselling and psychotherapy during my career break. In terms of how actually made the switch, I followed my foundation course with the 4 year part time diploma in counselling and psychotherapy and was able to begin setting up my private practice in my 3rd year of that course. By the I qualified, I had quite a good size private practice. Just let me know if you have any other questions.

@@JohnPaulDaviesTTP The hardest part is giving up the Podiatry and going all in with the therapy. I didn’t make a ton of money as a Podiatrist and the Covid pandemic really hurt my practice. So really it just comes down to finances. I have four children and the budget is tight.
