As a videographer, I collect many terabytes of footage each year in my career. I’ve tried finding a good storage management system for a long time - using various hard drives, multiple backups, online cloud storage, and so forth. It was hard to stay organized and I was constantly just waiting for the day that my hard drives would fail me. I finally chose to invest in a Synology NAS (Network Attached Storage) and I couldn’t be more happy with my decision. In this video, I explain to you why I use a NAS and I walk you through exactly how I set it up. I show you what I bought, how I installed it, and tried to explain how these systems work in layman’s terms to help you understand. I really tried to make this video as helpful as I could. I hope you enjoy! Thank you so much for watching!
Resources, as mentioned, for setting up your NAS through the DiskStation Manager (DSM):

WunderTech: • COMPLETE Synology NAS ...
Everything you need to set up your NAS exactly as I did:

Perfect timing. I was researching adding a NAS on KZfaq but not really finding a comprehensive explanation from a videographer’s perspective. Then, I saw your post on FTF. Thanks for doing this!

Great Synology NAS video tutorial! I can feel your passion and effort into making this! 👍 There are two things I would like to point out though: First, please do use a UPS (Uninterrupted Power Supply) on your Synology NAS. Set it up in a way that will allow your NAS to automatically and safely shutdown if there is no power. This will prevent you from potentially corrupting or loosing your precious data. In fact, a UPS is not only good for NAS'es but also to all electronic devices that are prone to damage due to power outages. I have my PC, routers, and switches all connected to a UPS also. Second, I also advise you to upgrade you RAM on your Synology DS1821+ to 32GB of ECC RAM since you deal with a lot if large files. That particular model supports ECC RAM that can further protect your important data from corruption due to bit flips. Not all NAS'es supports ECC memory but yours does and you make a living using your NAS so please do take advantage of it to the full potential by upgrading it to 32GB. Anyways great vid again and God Bless! I hope you don't loose any of your data now that your are using a NAS. A raid set up though as many veteran network ppl will tell you is not a backup. Do still backup your files on other external drives and offsite depending on how important those files are to you just in case. 😘

Ok, firstly I have to commend you for a beautiful job in explaining this for folks out there! I've been an IT professional for over 28 years, I do this as a pro for a living. What you've achieved is a HUGE learning curve. It's very very daunting! I was so proud of you! (Sorry, I don't mean to sound condescending.) The way you explained everything in such a gentle, laymen, way was brilliant. But I was so amazed, everything you said was spot on!.. brilliant. Though I'm curious why you went with RAID5 and not SHR, slightly concerned of your upgrade path in the future, but I'm sure you had good reason for this. I love Synology, brilliant investment.. but BOY is it a financial investment. Keep up the brilliant work. Tony. ;-)

Oh yeah , Frank and Will , the only reason why I was able to install , configure all my shared folders , configuring my snapshots, my hyperbackup and my VPN, active backup for business from start to finish in less then 2h with the security too !!!! I bought a ds923+ with the 10Gb expansion card and I upgraded my network at home too.

Thank you for making this video! It was incredibly helpful to see how the whole process works. At this point I don't know when I should implement a system like this... It may be easier for me to wait until I've graduated from college. It just seems like a nightmare to move the whole system from one place to another in the event that I were to move homes.

Thank you so much! Exactly what I was looking for as I've been watching SpaceRex's videos for some days now ahah One other thing I would love to see is how the NAS is integrated into your workflow, so in terms of file structure and if you edit direct off the NAS or have the files locally and then move them to it, things like that, probably too specific though but I'm a bit like you, I like to know these details so I can map out my own workflow ahah

Very nice job, i really like that you blurred out the PII on setup and log ins, very well done. A quick way to make sure a IP you want to reserve for something is not already in use, is to let DHCP assign it and then reserve it on the DHCP server(router in your case it sounds like) and then set the static info on the device.

I hope you have another one as the "backup" of the main storage. I had one, and then two disks fail after each other. After that the volume was set to "read only" which means you cannot practically use it anymore. Even Sharesync or other apps wont start because its read only. So make sure you have two nas'es, or an offline solution

Thank you so much Jordyn! You make it so so easy to understand!! I just bought a 6 bays one and expecting to arrive. Did decided yet on which model of Seagate drives to select because I am concerned about noise. Do you feel the EXOS noisy?
@JordynDunseath
@JordynDunseath 5 ай бұрын
Hi, of course, I'm so glad it was helpful! I am getting noise from my EXOS drives but honestly not anymore than the drives I have in my other NAS. It isn't too bothersome to me. I won't deny that there is noise - but I'm personally fine with it.

Nice video, want to get a Synology soon and watching all the video I can, Specrex is good. May I ask, as you a couple of synology, how do you find the hard drive noise when they are doing stuff like a DATA scrub or a drive check, I know they can make noise do you find it a lot of noise being in your office space next to your work area? Was reading the EXOS drives can be loud in use.
@JordynDunseath
@JordynDunseath 3 ай бұрын
Awesome! And yeah, to be honest, the EXOS drives are louder than I expected when I work off of them - but it doesn’t bother me too bad. If you place your NAS right next to you, you will notice. But if you keep it in a closet or somewhere safe - you might not notice the sound too much from a distance.

Can you edit videos directly from the nas?
@JordynDunseath
@JordynDunseath 4 ай бұрын
Yes! You can have your project file hosted on the NAS and edit directly from it. I suggest upgrading to the 10GbE speeds and connecting your computer through the wired connection (Ethernet) to edit more efficiently. The NAS could be slower and more difficult to edit from over WiFi but still possible.
