You have several advantages, you have additional income from KZfaq, no kids to support, no mortgage to pay, etc. you will be fine. The naysayers are trying to support their families and pay their ridiculous monthly bills from trucking and it’s not easy. You will be fine in a lease program

One tip I always give and it goes for company drivers or O/O drivers. Never trust the word of a dispatcher or broker. Always call and double check your appointments yourself. It will save you a lot of grief and sometimes pay off if the customer will take you early.

You try to explain that to these new drivers today they know it all they know jack shit you try to spread some wisdom and knowledge you try to lay some up and show them that’s what old school drivers used to do. There’s very few of us left today’s drivers Boat down they keep going nobody stops and you couldn’t said it better always confirm your appointment hello’s dispatchers and brokers are the biggest fucking liars that walk the Earth I gotta go. I gotta block all this cat, leave a horse to water and make them drink it let them learn the hard way stop giving advice. I drive for Walmart's private fleet I made $120,000 last year, and I am on a 5/2 program and have almost 30 days paid vacation every year and at the end of my week I just walk away from my assigned truck and if it needs maintenance it will be done by my go out day. They DO NOT run their 10,000 truck nationwide fleet like a trucking company because they do not make their money on the trucks, rather in the stores. They also have so many different programs that a driver can be on 6/2, 5/2, 6/3, 5/5, 3/4 and some programs use day cabs where the driver goes home every night, so there is always a program that will fit a driver's needs.

I was an owner operator in 2022. I bought my truck and financed it through a bank. I made $360,000 that year. Some weeks i made as much as $12,000 (gross) but after expenses which is mainly fuel cost..the check was just over $7,000 net. Still an amazing check. My truck payment was only $500/week because im paying on a 2016 Freightliner Coronado. It was rough because the biggest expense is fuel, in which i was paying at least $3500/week. I had a some issues with my truck as far as the DEF system and had to take it to the shop several times which also cost me thousands. So maintenance is a big expense too especially if your truck isn't brand new. I'm no longer an owner operator because although i made $360k...after all my expenses, my actual net was only around 92k. In 2021 i made $125,000 as a company driver. So i decided to go back to that same company. I have 11 years driving experience so i understand people like you who can't get good paying jobs until you get enough experience and so Prime and Swift are great places to get that experience. Being an owner operator is totally glamorized. Its not what people think. Ya...my biggest checks were huge...but you also have extremely bad weeks where you literally make nothing or a negative check because of low rates, high fuel and possibly maintenance that week. You have to learn how to manage your money as an owner op and make sure you set aside at least $10,000 in separate expense account or emergency fund. Do your research people. I'm now convinced that as a company driver i take home more money than owner operators because they have way too many expenses!! Its not worth it in my opinion but to each his/her own. Do your research.

What if you bought more trucks & paid a driver $60-$80k salary. I feel like after you become an OO, that’s the only way to reach new growth, buying additional trucks & putting drivers in it. Once you’re at 10+ trucks you’d be killing it & could stop driving to build more growth, revenue, etc. Just thinking out loud. That’s my goal once I get my CDL through prime.

I assume people that worry about truck speed are new drivers. When I was new I was so mad having a truck governed at 62mph but after few years my company raised speed to 70mph. My loads are planned at 55mph so i try to stay around 60mph. When you’re driving for 11 hours your goal is to get there safe and on time. It’s not the same as speeding to your friends house 10 minutes away. Extra jewel, speeding on hot asphalt leads to higher chances of tire blowout.

Personally I'm glad that you went lease, I've been trucking for 42 years, and I have been on my own for 20 years as an owner operator, when I bought a brand new 379 in 03, I still have it and drive it everyday, my advice to you as a young driver is keep at lease for a few years, and save your money, depending on what truck you plan on buying, I would have 60-90k in an account separate from your down payment or what you use to buy your truck out right, that covers an engine and transmission, and things associated with the drive train. But right now in this economy it's really not worth being an owner operator unless you got a good gig to pull hazmat, heavy haul, oil field stuff like that, with the price of fuel, and outrageous insurance prices, and poor freight prices, I just don't think its worth to be an owner op anymore, the good ole days when trucking was fun are long gone. I will say that I am proud of you for the things you're doing, you're doing great, and gonna go far, just stick with what you love, and you'll do just fine

@Jrs-tl4kk 7 ай бұрын
@markealy2188 I didn't say you can't make it out here, but I know from 42 years that with some gigs you can be home nightly or weekly and make good money, where others you have to stay out on the road for weeks to make the same amount that some truckers run in a week, but regardless of what you do, once you have your own truck and authority everything changes, cause you have to run hard unless you don't have a truck payment, but if you got a truck payment, insurance, fuel, tax, maintenance, it adds up very quickly, so I feel like where she's at now is perfect for her, and I'm happy for her, and wish her the best always.

Given their specialized expertise and education, as well as the fact that each and every one of their skills is centered on harnessing risk for its asymmetrical potential and controlling it as a buffer against certain unfavorable developments, it is practically impossible for them to underperform. LP is $14k down minus $1k per every year leased up to 8 years. Regular lease takes 6pm that goes into lease completion bonus. Typically between $10-20k back to you at end of lease depending on what needs to be done to truck. All trucks have 4 year/500k mile factory warranty so nearly everything except basic maintenance is covered. I’ve done both of these leases. I’ve been with Prime for 7 years and I can say that none of the other mega carriers can touch Prime. Also, I consistently average $3 per mile at Prime so if you can’t make money here you are doing something wrong. My weekly average take home as a solo is $2800 and my best was $7500

So Prime handles everything from start to finish and bears ALL financial responsibility and all you do is jump in the seat and drive just like you would as a company driver yet Prime would rather pay you $2800/week when they could just pay a "company" driver less than half of that? You did nothing to contribute to becoming an owner operator so why would Prime pay more for literally the exact same job as company driving. They're not dumb so I bet I know the answer to these questions... they obviously make more with this model where nothing changes except you have a slightly fancier title. Right?

Thank you for the informative video. Glad to hear the experience with Prime is going well! Just to confirm-even on your worst week so far, which I think you said was approximately $600 net, you were still able to cover your weekly lease payment and all other truck/operating expenses? And still have approx. $600 leftover?

When I was lease, I would fill up $300 at a time. It worked out well for me. With Pom, you have to stop every few hours anyway so it wouldn't hurt to try. Helps the fuel from eating too much of your load profits, too.

Worst snow storm I was ever in when I was driving was coming off the mountain in Flagstaff AZ. It was a blizzard and they closed the road right after myself and two other trucks got to the bottom of the hill. I don't blame you for not wanting to "chain up" lol. Also chains can put more strain on the truck's differentials so would change gear oil intervals for them too. 😊

It's not about what other people are thinking.. they are literally trying to help her out because she is making less than me while I work as a company driver... I average 2k-3k a week running between 3000-3500 miles a week and last year I made 122k when I filed my taxes.. I get paid every week... I don't pay for gas, repairs, or tires her making $2 per mile is not more than a person make .70cpm who doesnt have to for gas/def/repairs truck note and insurance... she could make 265k a year on paper and only profit 87k after all her expenses from getting pimped out by prime who's dispatching her and taking 20% of her load

My brother drove with Prime in the early 2000s. They kept dead heading him 600 miles, 800 miles on his pocket for gas. He finally parked the truck on the side of the road and told them to come get it and jumped on a plane. They kept giving him team loads and fined him when he didn't make it on time. I hope they have gotten better since then.

Been in logistics for 15 years now and got my Class A this year. I’ve got about 7 months CDL experience doing local deliveries when I had drivers missing and I’m about to do regional Great Lakes to get some OTR experience. Going with Swift just because they take anyone and I still got bills to pay, but I’m gonna get in and get out after I get my 5 months. Leasing sounds pretty good and I know Prime is looking for people in the area I live so might look into that afterwards. Love the videos though, really informative, keep on trucking!

Ummm do you not know we are in a freight recession? The market is in the dumpster and we may not even be at the bottom. Be patient. Don't set yourself up for hardship. If you are new to trucking, owning one of these is not for you. Just be happy as a company driver. Please listen, I've been a driver for just about 30 years. Now is not the time. You need to gain experience anyways. Do your research. Know your numbers!!

@@scottmiller4745I’m not going to drive anyways, no trucking company pays well enough at the moment. If I’m not bringing home $850 - $1,000 for 40 hours of work then it’s not worth it and that’s not even enough at the moment. Thank goodness I didn’t pay for my CDL, it’s basically worthless right now.

@@nannynayt4270 If I sold this truck I would have no problem going back to Old Dominion. I was in LTL for 7 years. By far the best job I had being home every day and no weekends, unless I wanted to work a Saturday pulling pups terminal to terminal for extra cash. P&D pays over $35/hr basically 10 hours a day. Line haul was paying .75cpm and free health care. Saia is also a pretty good company. A little less $ but opportunities to work yer ass off and do 100 grand.
