And you mentioned the party scene at UCI, I was just wondering if you can describe that more in depth. I know UCI isn’t known to be a party school but there had to be something going on there right?
@katiegirl
@katiegirl 4 жыл бұрын
in a nutshell, yes, uci is NOT a known party school. a big part of why that is is because of the city of irvine, it's a safe and no-nonsense kinda of area. so clubs and greek life and friend groups do find ways around that by having their own get together's and gatherings but usually if you hangout with party/event/rave people they'll want to go and that's how the "uci party scene" works. at least from my knowledge/experience

can you talk a little bit about choosing classes/your schedule? as a freshman, did you have classes on all weekdays? did you have any 8 am's? was it hard for you to get the schedule you wanted? thank you for your videos :)
@katiegirl
@katiegirl 4 жыл бұрын
sure!! i, personally, had classes EVERY weekday...BUT some of my friends have had days where they had no classes on certain days during the week or what i had, i had some days i only had classes once a day. as a first year you most likely will have classes everyday. and also unfortunately, first years have many general education class you need to take that usually are at 8am. as a computer engineer, some major restricted classes are harder to get because it’s specifically for your major. and popular GE’s (general education classes) fill up fast. OH! your class enrollment dates are also determined off of how many units you completed. the more units you have the earlier the enrollment window date and the sooner you can get your classes :) a nice thing to know is that there’s a date where if students didn’t pay their quarterly fees/tuition by that date, their classes are dropped and more spots are opened up. also you can enroll/change your class schedule up until the week 2’a friday by 5pm. my advice on picking classes is PLAN AHEAD!! set multiple schedules where classes don’t overlap and spaced out the way you like (also keeping in mind how you can walk/get to the class in good time), know the class’s code too when you enroll. using peter’s almanac, any planner, zot course are good ways to plan (BUT NOT ENROLL). also while planning your classes know how the time of day works with you personally like when you want to eat, if you have club meetings, want to study/nap, etc. GOOD LUCK!! :)

I have no problem with Asian Americans but my cultural is important to me so I was hoping to meet other Hispanic Americans or join clubs affiliated towards that if there are any?
@katiegirl

aww thank you for the sweet comments! yes! there are cultural clubs that are on campus, every quarter there's an on-campus involvement fair where different clubs/organizations advertise and set up booths promoting their group and events they do! i high recommend checking out there, googling uci clubs, and also Facebook is a great resource when trying to reach out and connect to new people and clubs

hey!! i got accepted to uci and have committed but i’ve heard that it’s “socially dead” and i’m wondering if this is true? are there parties? events? sports? thanks in advance, your videos are super helpful :))
@katiegirl
@katiegirl 4 жыл бұрын
why hello! lol aww thank you for the support! because uci is considered a "commuter school," most weekends are very quiet and "socially dead" on campus, BUT we do have sports events and other things like concerts! but these events also happen during the weekdays so the weekends are still more empty than weekdays. our more popular sports are basketball and volleyball, soccer too but i personally have not experienced a soccer game. uci has some on-campus concerts like the (maybe discontinued) shocktoberfest, summerlands (a more vibe-y concert), and at the beginning of the year during involvement week there's APAD (aldrich park after dark) there ARE parties around campus but you usually get in when you have friends who know someone who it hosting or going to the party. it's really word of mouth unless you're involved in greek life where you kinda have to know what parties are happening. there are also kickbacks where just groups of friends get together and have their own mini party. hope this helps!

What other colleges were you accepted to? I'm personally torn between UCSB, UCI, and the College of William and Mary. How do you feel UCI compares to UCSB?
@katiegirl
@katiegirl 4 жыл бұрын
I was also accepted to UCI, SDSU, CPP, LBSU, UCD, UCSD (wait listed). personally, ucsb be my dream and top school i wanted to go to but was denied due to my SAT score being off by 10 points to their engineering average. i don't know the college of william and mary so i can really compare.... BUT in comparison to ucsb, the uci campus is a lot more condensed, if you like the beach, ucsb is better beach it's literally on the beach. the engineering program at both campuses are really good and thorough and efficient but i personally thought that santa barbara promoted and advertised it a lot better and with more enthusiasm. both schools have no football teams so that itself is one less big sporting event if you're into that kind of thing. ucsb is considered a "party school" so it's more social and alive on weekends compared to uci's social scene but not the say that uci doesn't have it share of parties either. both campuses have concerts but i'm not sure what ucsb's concerts are called. i know for a fact that i would have been more distracted with social events at ucsb compared to uci but only slightly because i'm not one to really go out a lot, but uci does have amusement parks close by for weekends and holidays to blow off steam. both campuses have "college towns" around and near by but it depends what you usually like and are into. i hope this helps, if you have any more questions feel free to ask away!

Hi! I am an incoming freshman and I was just wondering the type of meal plan you suggest? I was planning on doing 100 meals per quarter but my friend suggested buying the unlimited option. What do you suggest?
@katiegirl
@katiegirl 4 жыл бұрын
CONGRATS! welcome to the uci family! so for my first year and my second year here at uci i lived on campus and both times i had the 7-day meal plan, this was ideal for me because i would stay over the weekends on-campus and NOT go home but i also didn't want to cook as well. so the 7-day was nice for me. it also had the same 10-guest meals per quarter (that roll over each quarter, but stops after the year is over) that ALL plans have, and $50 FlexDine each quarter that also rolls over. HOWEVER, if you plan on going home on weekends and/or like and enjoy cooking, i would recommend the 5-day plan just because you wouldn't need to pay for the weekends you wouldn't use and still can eat as many times during the week. plus you get $75 FlexDine to use around the food places on-campus NOW for the 100-days, you get the $75 FlexDine too but you can only swipe 100 times, this can be difficult because if you want to eat with your friends and you already swiped that day, it'll be a pain to keep track and kinda feel left out if you don't go with... also if you like eating (like me!) you need to plan when to eat and how much you're trying to have and take back to the room (as a to-go box) ALSO to note, to-go boxes ARE available but each time you get one and use one, you'll use a swipe and you're not allowed to stay in the eatery while you use and pack up the to-go boxes. i know the decision is a bit difficult because it's hard to tell what you're going to do before you're even here BUT DON'T WORRY! you can change your meal plan anytime if you want! i hope this helps! GOOD LUCK AND CONGRATS!

@katiegirl

it's not that hard, but you can't change your major while at SPOP UNLESS you're admitted as an "Undeclared Major" or "Undeclared Engineer Major," but you can do it ASAP since you already have an idea of what you want to switch into. email your academic adviser saying you'd like to switch majors and that'll start the process (but remember that it'll take some time to hear back because they're under a lot of stress due to the pandemic and only being online. but here is a link with the requirements of what you need to switch your major :) GOOD LUCK!! changeofmajor.uci.edu/engineering/?fbclid=IwAR143wlZUl0qYQ9UdLzy_53RFySi60GwfebdGR-27DwOWv-3onX26sv0Vb4

That you for this video. I am unsure wether I want to go to UCI, UCSB, or UCSD. I am a political science major and thought UCI would be best in order to double major in political science and business however I’m unsure which to choose from based on campus life, internship opportunities and overall vibe. What is your opinion?
@katiegirl
@katiegirl 4 жыл бұрын
i am unsure about political science majors but business majors at uci are tough from what i hear and uci is known for our business school which means more opportunities but also higher competition. i don't know too many business majors but but they seems to have a pretty decent and average workload for a university student. uci as a whole is a great school and ucsd and ucsb are too but it really comes down to if you want a bustling campus and fun weekends because uci is a commuter school so on weekends it's usually dead campus but no matter what school you pick it's up to you to make the most of the opportunities and time there! good luck hope this helps!

this is honestly up to your preference and what you want out of the school. also i think location/weather, and campus comes into play. i also don't know what major you're in and if distance could be a thing you want to be far or close. i wasn't even accepted to berkeley but i know now that even if i got in i wouldn't have gone because it's too far from home for me and i would have been way more behind in work.

Hello, I am currently freaking out, haha.. I have an -A, B+, and the rest A/A+. I’m going into my Junior year in High School. My school does not provide any AP/Honor classes and barely has any extra-curriculars. I might move High Schools. UCI is my dream school. Do you think this would affect me badly on the chances on me getting in? Do you have any tips on studying for the ACT and/or SAT?
@katiegirl
@katiegirl 3 жыл бұрын
though those classes do help in putting you ahead compared to other students, you have other ways besides sticking to what your high school provides to get in to a university! :) community college classes also can count for AP-like credit, also community and volunteer help outside academic themes are great too! also the way you create and send in your UC application is also a great way to show who you are as a person not just a student, and there's a section where you can explain anything about your experience at your school like covid quarantine if that affected you and your school performance and how your school didn't offer AP's but you went and sought out college courses to get ahead or somethings like that. for studying for ACT and SAT i recommend just doing practice problems and focusing on the concepts you don't really get... also under conditions that are like the real test day, so like the timing and no distractions setup you'll be in also i recommend sat/act study sessions at your local library or other schools hope this helps! good luck!

I was wondering if you can tell me about the typical school work you have to do on weekends. I plan on coming back home on some weekends to visit my family and I want to know what to expect.
@katiegirl
@katiegirl 4 жыл бұрын
sure! depending on the classes/major it's really up to you how you spread out your time to work on your school work. for me, i'm a computer engineer and i take an average of 17 units per quarter, i try to study at least 40 hours a week, a majority of it being on the weekends. i don't go home often even though i can but in terms of assignments they don't take too much time, but with group labs/assignments that may vary depending on the people in your group. also you want to make time to review and study the content/concepts of the class and that's entirely up to you as a student. also another factor to incorporate is how you work in different environments, at home or at school may have distractions like family/friends, events, outings so plan studying time according to what you need and want to do! good luck!

i'm unsure how to change majors for what you want...BUT the sooner you tell your adviser AND the adviser/head of the department of the major you want to switch into, the better. usually the sooner you act on any changes and the sooner to try to talk to an adviser about what you need to do the more likely you'll change sooner and you won't take any classes that you don't need. good luck! i'm sorry i don't know too much

@katiegirl
@katiegirl 4 жыл бұрын
why henlo! so to be honest, i have no insight to transfer students and what they have to go thru :( sorry! BUT greek life at uci is USUALLY open to whoever wants to rush, in terms of transferring within the same frat/sorority/chapter, you'd have to take it up with their president, if you're rushing, you're no alone, there are plenty of second years and third years that rush :) so living on campus in the dorms IS GREAT AND I LOVE IT but this year (my second) is my last year in the dorms unless i become an RA by a God-ordained miracle lol but the off-campus apartments that are thru uci (so basically on-campus) are pretty nice too depending which community you get. the newest and probably the nicest is Plaza Verde, the closest to campus (on middle earth's side) is Puerta Del Sol, on the mesa court side, the closest is utc apartments, and more! because i haven't actually lived there personally it's hard to say but from what my friends say it's pretty nice and it's a new taste of freedom and independence as an adult. good luck and i hope this helped :)
