I’ve been seeing so many bootleg Blu-ray and DVD releases lately for popular TV shows and movies not on HD physical formats yet, and I just can’t support it. Here are my thoughts and what I hope we can all do to make sure the filmmakers and physical media studio teams are being supported.

the people who would buy a bootleg, will gladly upgrade if there is an official release. We are a niche group. The common man isnt buying bootlegs. The collector is buying bootlegs and we all have purchased multiple copies of the same movie. I would bet that if they saw their movie peaking in the bootlegs that would show them there is a market for physical media.

Exactly. Truthful I hate bootlegs, but if the studios won't release a certain title, I'm not going to go without it if I want it bad enough. As soon as the studios actually release an official version, I'll happily trow the bootleg away and buy the real deal. There is already an example of this. I bought a bootleg for what would be DuckTales: Volume 4 a little over a decade ago. I actually really hated that release, but Disney at the time seemed unlikely to finish the show on DVD. About 7 years later, they finally released an official version and I happily bought it.

I showed my support for films like Barbarian by going to the theatre and seeing it a few times with different friends. I also purchased the VUDU license for it but honestly, I’m a physical media guy and if the studio neglects films by not putting out a physical release after a reasonable amount of time, I’m going to get my physical copy either by importing an official foreign copy if available or by other unofficial means. As far as I’m concerned, I’ve done my part to support the filmmakers and then some so, the only people hurting the filmmakers at that point in my view isn’t me, it’s the studios who have been negligent. If I gave all I could, that’s all you can ask of someone and if they don’t offer an official physical media option, that’s all on them.

@@JeffRauseo I truly hope some of the studio people see this video and the conversations. They need to see how important physical media is to many of us. And that because they are failing to provide and fill the need for many movies, that bootleggers are doing better than ever. Perhaps some of them might rethink not releasing all of these streaming “exclusives” on physical media. They need to see how devoted this community is. And more importantly, they need to know nearly ALL of us who buy bootlegs occasionally will ALWAYS pick the official releases over bootleg. If they just give them to us on disc!!!

If there isn't an option for ownership, that's the studio's fault. If I pay for Hulu, watch Prey, then decide I want to own it and they won't give me a legal means, maybe I buy a bootleg (I haven't for this movie, but the point stands). These companies can literally pull their content whenever they feel like it. Then it's just gone. If no one else is going to preserve it, then yeah, bootleggers will. With that said, I prefer to pay for ownership from the companies directly. But again, if I pay for Hulu already and watch something on their service but decide I want to own it and they don't offer ownership, I can go elsewhere.

Jeff. Couldn’t your reasoning of buying bootlegs not supporting creators, directors, etc… also apply to buying used copies of official releases on eBay, Mercari, Whatnot, yard sales, etc…? Those same people don’t get a dime when you buy or sell a used copy of a Blu Ray disc. I’m sure the argument can be made that at least they got compensated for the first sale when it was bought from a business brand new, but a used purchase stops them from being compensated for another brand new sale they would have got had the buyer not bought it used.
@ninjafoxgamesgeekery

The multi-billion dollar studios have actually tried to find ways to make all of those used copies illegal to buy through the decades. They saw streaming as their godsend that they could eliminate physical media, eliminate used copies, and lock audiences into perpetual payments for life. Artists and creatives have actually supported piracy and bootlegs at various times through the years in opposition to the corporations.

Took the words out of my mouth. Well reasoned and an argument brought up by media companies lately. Always wanting more. After all, why should anyone own what they've paid for and then be able to resell it without some uninvolved party also profiting? I'd also point out that Disney doesn't have all that much spare change laying around anymore since they've made so many staggeringly profitable business decisions in recent years. Down to around 200 million and facing not only layoffs but the possibility of selling off IPs.

@@JeffRauseo valid point. Typically yes. For instance, I just purchased the 4K of Dragonslayer which upgrades an HD rip that I had previously obtained. Certainly not the only example but the quickest to come to mine. Typically official also means an upgrade so I mean that seems like a no-brainer but I understand that there are situations where that may not be the case in which case I guess it would matter if I ever wanted to watch the movie again. People won't pay for what they don't want so when it comes to films I feel like they should get the physical media out there quickly before people can decide against purchasing a film. Give me a reason to buy it now while the hype is there. For what it's worth I would purchase prey and I would be happy to purchase Barbarian as well.

This has got to be the hottest topic in physical media. I don't think there are many that wouldn't buy an official release to replace the bootleg that they have. I think most bootlegs on the market right now are off of subscription services that most of us already subscribe to. Folks just want a physical copy as well. I would also argue for those that didn't watch the Mandalorian and bought the bootleg probably subscribed to Disney+ when the second or third season came out. Movies like Prey, that came out on hulu which anyone that saw it subscribes to. I guess what I'm saying is, the artists/creators are getting their money. As my DVR didn't know to record it as every season it was like a brand new show and I started missing episodes. I bet viewership declined because of the name changes which probably ended up getting it cancelled. I also own the DVD's for Sealab 2021. Though the later season isn't as good as the main character actor died. I really need to rewatch that series as it's been about 10 years. I also like Code Monkey's. Blaming consumers is as lame as the ads you would see on old dvds asking whether ‘you would steal a car.’ If you knew anything about piracy - you would be thanking the pirates, as they are doing the job studios aren’t and introducing shows and movies (affordably) to audiences around the world - leading to future subs and sales. Game of Thrones (a show I find absolutely boring) became the INTERNATIONAL sensation it did in no small part because of pirates translating it to other languages that HBO initially ignored. Feel free to google the Forbes article ‘Game of Thrones Most Pirated Show but Does HBO Care?,’ or google why CD Projekt Red doesn’t put DRM on their games - even at launch. This video is ignorant, corporate bootlicking garbage that punches down and ignores those who are directly responsible for the outcomes - studio decision makers.

Like, no one who likes a movie enough to buy it physically is gonna willingly choose to own the inferior version. 👍. There are places that are doing it legally but there are so many layers to this. If you only watch it on streaming or buy it digitally the companies say hey look out streaming service or digital sales are great so we don’t have to put a physical release out.. hence Disney now looking into physical media releases again. It hurts physical when we only watch streaming and buy digitally. It puts the studios in control. No one in their right mind is going to just keep the bootleg when a official release comes out. Anyone who owns physical is a collector and if they were fan enough to get seek and get a bootleg then you bet their bottom dollar they will buy official release. Also, if studios see people are buying the bootlegs then they may want to pull the trigger faster on releasing a physical because they see the demand. Also they can remove anything from streaming at anytime. I only have a few. Blood Beach blu-ray(also Legit VHS), Alligator 1 &2, Alone in the Dark, TCM 2022.for Blood Beach still doesn’t have any official release anywhere so that’s why I have it. Alligators and Alone in the Dark I bought 4-5 years ago because you couldn’t find them anywhere but when Scream Factory released them I instantly preordered so I have the official copies because that’s supporting. For TCM I watched the crap out of it in Netflix but only have the bootleg as a holding place until it gets an official release. I also no longer have Netflix because there wasn’t really anything I cared to watch on there outside TCM and May the Devil Take You which needs a physical and doubt ever will. There are many films that may never get an official release with no way to watch them except bootleg or might not be released for years…. I’ll be dead by then so I’d really like to watch the film instead of saying oh well guess I’ll hope it will come out one days. I always do my research to see if there is a foreign release first if not one in US. Usually not all the time , if there is a foreign release only then there is a chance in the coming year there will be a US one. I’m region free so I just buy the foreign unless I don’t mind waiting a little longer depending on foreign label. I’ll buy dvd releases only if it was released in dvd not blu-ray. Buying bootleg in the long run is. Indifferent than buy king secondhand. If you buy from secondhand stores or eBay it only really goes to the seller but the artist. It doesn’t count either. It’s the same thing. If I buy infinity pool, then decide I don’t want it go to eBay and sell it. My original purchase is the only one that counts. Same if I told it at a local store.

@@JeffRauseo Sorry to say I strongly disagree with you about your topic here, I see no reason to just buy the digital copy and support while buying a disc to own at the same time. Streaming should not have to win this way. Especially if Disney+ and the others will just easily churn out a lot of garbage content digitally, we need to stop the business model. We need people to get the incentive that they put a real amount of time and effort put into what they make for content. Otherwise you might as well just buy NFT stuff. The market needs to stop shrinking and we need another way of stopping that if you want us to take you seriously, because this just sounds like an apathetic statement that any tool would make in support of greedy NeoLiberal Hollywood. Alright, so I watched the whole video and here's my take on this. It feels like a lot of your points fall apart under basic scrutiny. If bootlegs sell gangbusters, that doesn't mean official releases won't sell. It means that fans WANT the official versions. They will likely convert the VAST majority of bootleg buyers to official. As for things that are only on streaming? Yeah, your point doesn't make sense there at all. I can rewatch something a dozen times over on streaming but they DECIDED to put it there only. Look at Hellraiser 2022. Hellraiser got a DVD release here in the UK. That's ALL. I want it on Blu Ray, so I bought the DVD first then transferred a high quality Hulu rip (with some Topaz Video AI cleanup) to Blu Ray. I've proven there that I want the physical release (and have paid to support it) but looked after myself as a film fan, as the studios AREN'T looking after me.

As a major home entertainment buyer as you know (15K plus discs in my collection), I have to disagree on this one…. Because many releases are never gonna be released on disc, no matter how much you believe it, I believe it, or we beg and plead with the studios... And even if they are, as someone who wants an official copy, I will nearly always buy the official copy anyway, in addition to the bootleg. And the majority of those who buy bootlegs will STILL buy an official copy like me. Many of these streaming movies will never get a release on physical media, now or in the future. And as physical media continues to shrink, they are even less likely to ever be released on physical media. So I am gonna buy them, while I can, on disc. So in the future, when the streamer, decides to pull down my digital purchases (which has already happened to me on about a DOZEN digital purchases), I have it. Sorry, but that is just the way is. I also disagree because we all know that the studio people see these bootlegs pop up. And if they see it selling well, even on bootleg, I fully believe it has to have impacted at least some studios to release movies on disc (because they see how popular the bootlegs are) that would have never been released on disc, without that bootleg. By you buying digital streaming releases, you only further push studios to believe we only want digital streaming and digital ownership. When the only people that model had EVER benefitted is the studios. It costs them zero dollars beyond the first digital copy to sell that to everyone else. Whereas physical media costs for each piece. So the studios have pushed this down our throats, because they are greedy. They want not just a majority share of the sale. BUT ALL of a digital sale of a film! So I profoundly disagree on this topic with you. And actually think you are hurting the physical media by buying digital copies. Sorry… And I say that as a music artist who has literally had some of my music bootlegged. And certainly some of the films I have appeared in have been bootlegged many times… 🤷‍♂️

I disagree. The bootlegs hurt. The studios see that, and all they see is lost sales. In a world where even the best physical media releases may only sell 50,000 copies, a couple of thousand lost to bootlegs is bad business. Back in the day they sold so many VHS and DVD that they could recover. They still lost hundreds of millions. But nowadays, every sale counts. And every sale lost hurts.

@@JeffRauseo we will have to agree to disagree on this one… I realize you have a show. But I am someone who has actually worked directly in the music and film industry as an artist, actor and producer. With multiple studios since the 90’s. 🤷‍♂️ Also when you say only the best releases sell 50,000 copies, that is U.S. only numbers. Many other countries are still huge on physical media. I know this, because I have insider knowledge. Like a series of movies I was in called Mythica. The movies were produced by an independent studio. I was part of four of the first five films. We sold over 300K copies of that film series on DVD alone. Just in the U.S.. And just in Walmart. Because the distributor never finished paying. After filing bankruptcy. That is what was still owed on. Copies counted before that bankruptcy had been paid for. I am in direct contact with the studio heads of this series. So if they sold 300K plus copies of an independent film series, just on DVD and just in Walmart, then I know for a fact, bigger releases are moving more than 50K total units… Simply put: The Bootleg market wouldn’t be exploding like it is today, if the studios were filling this niche for buyers of physical media. I firmly believe most people will do the right thing and buy the official release if available. Especially since this isn’t like Napster, where the music was free. People still have to pay for these bootlegs. So if given a choice, to pay for an official release, or bootleg, I guarantee 99.99 percent of people would pay for the official release every single time. Unless it is like $60 verses a bootleg that is the same quality for $10. But if they are both about the same cost, people will always choose the official release. Believing the quality is superior because it is official. Which may or may not actually be true. But that is the perception of the public. So they will always choose official if available. I had to go back and manually edit my first post. I tried to use text to speech in a noisy room. And it made a mess. Lol

I completely understand all of your points and there all valid reasons. I personally has bought a handful of the custom “bootleg” Blu-ray because the chances of shows and films that are typically made for streaming services don’t have very little chance of ever getting a physical release and I’m a completist and I want to own a version of it physically. I’m subscribed to all of these streaming services and support the filmmakers behind it but the studios rarely give shows and movies on streaming services official physical releases. It is wrong but I don’t really have any other option especially if I want to complete certain franchises and other favorite titles that I love. I don’t do it often at all but I feel justified enough to buy them and I don’t blame those who are brave enough to hold out hope on an official release. I’ll buy those officially whenever it happens but as of right now, only few studios has shared shows/films from streaming services physically.

If you want The Devils, for example, they’re your only option. They have a lot of rare stuff sourced from the highest quality copies they can find, they’re doing important media preservation work. Any company can get an illegal digital copy taken down, but they can’t take away a burned disc.

Bootlegs have been around since the VHS years. I don't think the vast majority of people buying bootlegs are going to ignore an official physical release. The whole reason we feel we are having to buy bootlegs is because we want the film physically in our collections and the streaming services are hijacking that IP to bump up their streaming service numbers while all the apps are currently at war. If and when these studios release the license to have those films on blu rays/4k, we will purchase the upgrades no problem.

I personally think because streaming has won, it is the reason bootlegs probably should be supported in a way. What’s going to happen when the streaming service deletes it? Then it’s gone forever. The problem is that a lot of these companies now that make movies for their streaming services just refuse to release them on bluray, or even DVD for that matter. They live in some fantasy world where everyones internet runs perfectly at all times, or that everyone even has internet. I like to own my favorite movies physically because where I live right now my internet gets janky fairly often. And I dont like the idea of paying for a digital copy that a company can just take away at anytime just cause. So unfortunately if I cant get a copy of it to hold in my hands and put on my shelf, then Im more likely to lean towards piracy so I at least have it saved on my hard drive in case my internet decides to be garbage. Also there's just way too many streaming services now so they just ended up reviving piracy with every company wanting their own service. So yeah, if I can get a good transfer on a bootleg then I may be tempted to get one. I would still get an official release for a movie I really enjoy like Prey or the newest Hellraiser because it'll most likely have cool special features. But as long as companies refuse to give us that option, then they're just be hurting their own bottom dollar by letting the bootleggers have 1st dibs on the physical market

Hey Jeff, good and relevant topic. I don’t personally buy bootlegs for many of the reasons you stated in the video. But I also rarely ever buy digital copies. I redeem them with my disc purchases for the occasional convenience and travel. But I also don’t like to send the message to studios that a digital only release is good enough. I’m more likely to rent if I pay for digital, and then save my buying for a physical release. This is of course just my philosophy on this subject and I honestly can’t blame anyone who buys a bootleg when a studio refuses to release a physical copy.

Question: if you buy used from ebay, are you not equally denying the filmmakers any royalties from the sale? All that money goes to the seller, creators only received money from the initial purchase. Your support for the industry is then the same as if you had bought a bootleg copy. True, the corporations get to see the demand for their product through official channels, but if they are aware that bootlegging is a problem, then they can already see that the demand exists.

To each their own, but I’ll buy a boot if I know that there’s no hope. Just because I buy a boot of a show/movie doesn’t mean I don’t watch it as it’s airing/dropping. I’ll be there, see if I like it, if I do, I’ll buy a bootleg. Even then, I’ll still usually watch it on the platform. I like boots (like Midnight Mass and Sense8, two of my favorite shows ever) because my internet is not reliable and I’d like to have decent copies on hand in case I can’t watch it. Multiple points. Most collectors buy backups. The physical media collectors/fans and even passive buyers can't access things they want to own: 1: You're aiming this at a physical media channel. Collectors buying physical discs. People will subscribe and pay for services - they're supporting Hulu, Netflix, Disney+ etc. They will buy backups. And if there is a full retail version - they will buy that too. You missed the point on explaining most people will want to watch what they/like and love readily or in hand. 2: Streaming services remove content. So why shouldn't people have a back up? You're a collector yourself - what looks good on a shelf and what can you grab? If that title disappears and it's unavailable for years then who do they turn to? 3: Studios - These are the ones refusing retail copies of countless titles. It's all well and good saying "Wait. These titles will be coming!" If supporting filmmakers is so important - why not give options. Most filmmakers, artists and actors will have contractual agreements for physical media - but if you can't get it physically.... well. 4: Digital Copies - A heavily compressed file with substandard sound and picture by comparison to an official release on BD/UHD disc. Refer back to backups where official copies are heavily unavailable at retail. And who likes playing for thin air? If a streaming service offered a title for download at £14.99 - you'd want more than a promise of "Hey! You're renting/own this - but we can take it away when our contractual agreement ends after". You'd feel shafted. 5: Back Catalogue/Archive Titles - The industry has now got to a point where we are told what we can see opposed to how physical media was. We (as consumers) want to watch whatever we like/whenever we like. If we didn't have access to backups in some capacity then these films/titles wouldn't be offered at all. We all know it. 6: Region Restriction - not every title is available readily or in some cases, may be only available in select countries. Not everyone is tech savvy to access VPN's to go across multiple servers to access the things they want to see. 7: Service restriction - it's well documented that services restrict bandwidth so the things we want to see in HD/4K look jarring. Artefacts, crushed black levels, HDR being so poor and then compressed offerings that look shocking. If a top copy appears and looks superior - collectors will scramble to bag a copy. And then an official copy. **You missed out on covering a lot on that video**

I still have them as the final season is still only on Disney+ which I refuse to use or have but I will buy the official release if they ever do end up making a physical copy but looking at Disney's track record of putting their shows on DVD or Blu-ray its very unlikely and I think they did say they don't plan on putting their Disney+ exclusives onto DVD or Blu-ray.

Makes sense. Understandable to trash bootlegs in a place like the US where you literally get everything physical media related. But there are people who do the same in places like Brazil. Did you know Brazil has now 0 major companies (sony, disney, warner, etc) releasing physical media to our market? Brazil hasn't had production of players for close to a decade now. We never got an official 4k player, nor a locally made 4k blu ray (we currently have two local 4k releases but they are imported and sold at a massive premium). Physical media is dead here and in many other places, and the argument of "hurting the market" is nonsense because there literally is no market. And sure, bootlegs have been growing exponentially the last few months. But seeing the rich kids trashing bootlegs in places like this just grinds my gears, man. Don't like it, don't buy it. I was even planning to download it, burn it on a BD-R and create a cover myself! No way! I can buy the official digital copy (if exists) but nothing will stop me to make another "physical backup" to put on my shelf! If this is the future, well, I guess I'm done with this passion (like many others)! Why are they that stubborn to release them on disc (even on limited numbers) for us "physical fetishist"??? This is getting out of hand and if nobody stands up it will only get worse. This stance is very consumerist, and anti-art, despite what you're intentions are. Bootleggers are making sure art stays alive for pieces of art that are stuck in ownership disputes and just lost. It shouldn't be about who owns the film, it should be about making sure the art continues to live on and people have access to it. Look at what bootleggers have done for Star Wars in preserving film history by painstakingly reassembling the films as they were originally shown. Look at how someone made a Blade Runner 2049 IMAX available to us when it never would be because IMAX are greedy and only want you to see their format in theaters. It's elitist bullshit. If it weren't for bootlegs, some of these releases would never exist. Certain movies have just gone out of print and aren't available anywhere but through bootlegs. Bootleggers are preserving certain movies in a format that physical collectors want to have, but also some films aren't even available anywhere legally, including digitally. It's not really bootleg if the studio isn't putting it out. Whoever has the legal rights is all just made up. Rights disputes are fucking stupid and they only benefit corporate overlords who just care about money. If you want a physical copy of a film and a studio refuses to do that, but someone is willing to do it, it's a fair trade. It's called business. If there is demand for a product and the studio refuses to fulfill that demand, then someone else will. It's really simple, made complicated because of rights issues.

They are literally no better than bootlegs today. I have about 7-8 official MOD releases. And to be fair, some of my bootlegs are better quality. 🤷‍♂️

@@MyFireVideos well, you have to keep in mind, how these MOD are made. The reason this is an option to begin with, is the studio doesn’t want to spend the money to do a high end “official” physical media release. They then basically sub the work out or “farm” the work out to a contractor. Who is willing to make these MOD discs for them, for a cut of the sale price. Knowing they won’t sell tons and tons, they do very, very basic menus. No extras. And just a “play all” feature on some. To put in as little effort as possible. The only advantage they may have, is access to the original studio digital files. That have not already been compressed. Other than that, they are not doing anything most people couldn’t do. I have a small studio still. And quite a bit of my old label equipment. We have the ability to actually do any of these MOD discs and do a better job. Because we could spend the time to add extras and make menus, ect.. With access to Topaz software today and a few other key pieces of software and then a few thousand in equipment, you can set up a bootleg operation today every bit as good as the studio releases. With the exception that the discs are “duplicated” meaning burned. Rather than “replicated” which means using a glass master inside a factory to make the discs. The old reason replication was better than duplication, was because burnable disc quality was inferior 20 years ago. They were said to not last and degrade after a few years. Which on cheap discs was actually true. I have a few of those old discs still around as examples. But the discs for burning today are so much better quality, that the difference between the two is basically gone. If stored properly, a burned disc will last just as long as replicated discs today. It is all about storage and abuse. If you care for them orderly, there is no reason a burned Blu ray today won’t last 20-30-40 years or more…. In short, the formats will be long dead before it rots away. So the small runs we can make with burned discs today. Coupled with the fact that physical media sells so much less. It has made the bootleg market explode. And they are every bit as good as the offical releases in many cases today. I know. Because I have found a bootleg studio I buy from in China that has releases that look completely studio legit. Besides the burned disc on back. Otherwise, they are so good, they even have poly wrap on the cases. Just like a store bought Blu ray… So if there is something you want on physical media and can’t find it. Or it doesn’t exist, don’t be scared away from bootlegs. They are very good quality today. And until the studios fill this niche like they should, I have no issue recommending them anymore… 🤷‍♂️

At the end of the day it's up to the studios to get a physical release out in a timely manner. Prey and Barbarian have been streaming only for a decent while, so really no excuses for not having legit physical releases available already. I'm in Australia and these movies don't really get a theatrical run here, and I'm not signing up to multiple streaming sites to be able to watch the movies I want to watch, so I torrent, which is basically the same as bootlegs. But, if I dig a release I will hunt it down on physical format, even shitty old DVDs if that's the only version of a physical release available, and I have a few of those. But I love to buy new release blurays and 4ks for the reasons you said, you're supporting the industry and artists that brought you that product. If no one supports it then they'll stop making it. But if the companies won't release it, then how can we show our support? At the end of the day, they're losing out on $$ Prey and Barbarian would be big sellers, too. Could be the marketing people of those companies aren't in touch with the physical market and think streaming and digital is the be all and end all. I'm sure that at the end of the day there'll be a boutique label that'll give them a physical release at some point, and then I'll be on it

If a film does not have a current version of it available in any official capacity (digital or physical) then I see no problem with bootlegs. It's the same idea regarding games that have long gone out of print. The second hand market is only ever going to put money into the hands of individuals and never corporations, so if thats your only option to buy something, then just get a version that you want (digital or physical).

When Dawn of the Dead 1978 was out of print, and also unavailable on streaming/digital, I found and downloaded a video file of the Blu Ray transfer because there was no other option. HOWEVER, when the 4K edition from Second Sight came out, I was more than happy to delete my pirated version and buy the official release (which is better quality anyway, but even if it was simply a re-issue of the previous Blu Ray I still would have bought it and deleted my pirated copy). I plan to do the same with, say, Braindead (Dead/Alive) which is also out of print and unavailable to watch. Peter Jackson has said that he is working on a 4K remaster, so it that gets an official release I will also be perfectly happy to delete my pirated copy and buy the official release.

The problem with buying a movie digitally is that the streaming service can take it away at any time. Read the fine print. You don't get to keep it. Adding on to that is that you also need a good internet connection and in some countries you are paying $50 or more a month to keep an internet connection.

Great vid and interesting discussion but you're only really dipping your toes into half of the predicament. Sure for major releases like Barbarian and Prey - buying a bootleg is probably morally dubious and why not stream/buy digital/wait for a blu. But for films that are locked up by studios there's no moral high ground to take. Most filmmakers are fine with pirating and bootlegging a film if it's not available. Buy the bootleg and pirate if a studio isn't going to let a movie out of their vault. There's plenty of stuff that's still locked up and unavailable - I'm talking about Harmony Korine films, Greg Araki films, The Devils, tons of art house stuff, and tons of foreign films. Some of these titles can't even get proper theatrical distribution for anniversary screenings either (M. Night's The Village for whatever reason). Bootlegging is what pushed studios to finally start releasing phycials media. Tons of films wouldn't have survived without bootleggers and pirates. Famous ones at that - an intregal part of physical media history is Roddy McDowall getting raided by the FBI. Pirates have been pillars of film preservation since forever. Hell there's an Altman film that WB hasn't even released on DVD and the only reason you can watch it today is because a KZfaqr found a VHS tape with it recorded on it and decided to upload it. I'm saying all of this as someone who owns a few bootlegs (Harmony Korine stuff that you can't even get on DVD anymore) and who is a staunch support of all the botique labels doing the lords work out here. I don't like the idea of being told how/when/where I can watch and appreciate art. It comodifies it in a gross way when that happens. I also don't like the idea that people who can't spend $200 on an OOP DVD are just shit out of luck to ever experience that film. I grew up under those conditions in the midwest and honestly it's part of the reason why certain parts of this country contain folks in bubbles - they don't have opportunities to explore outside of those bubbles. At the end of the day it's an interesting discussion to have and I think it's less cut and dry than any of us are willing to admit.

Arguably, buying second hand also prevents companies to get an idea of figures. One sale turns into 3 people owning the same bluray at certain points in time. Also official channels can absolutely suck, and they bleed you dry. Particularly the anime industry. Dragonball has constantly released new and updated versions that are so much worse than the original airing. 30 years of consistently worse releases has lost my trust entirely. Evangelion on netflix changed so many things, and the originals are no longer available (new) as they were when they aired. When does buying second hand and torrenting become okay? Especially when the companies milk new releases with undelivered promises? So specifically in relation to this video, if a bootleg comes out and gives me the things I want in a bluray, when the actual company who owns it refuses to release something in full, why not buy it? Especially if enough time has passed and it's obvious that the company isnt going to give the fans what they want, why not buy a bluray with all the bells and whistles? Im thinking specifically dragonball, with the original japanese fan sourced audio tracks (Toei refuses to accept the fan recorded audio despite only having a highly degraded audio track in japanese). The digital world in some ways is very limiting, and collecting media as it was when it aired is becoming so expensive with every terrible rerelease saturating the market. I believe in supporting an industry or a company when it gives me reason to support them. Consumers have been failed time and time again. That's not to say there are arent some great releases out! Highly recommend "Night is Short, Walk on Girl"! Don't mean to be a debbie downer, its just something I've always personally felt conflicted about, and/or unsure of my stance, as I can't make the absolutes that i'd like to, in regards to supporting the film industry all the time :(

I've been planning on buying a bootleg copy of Prey because I love the series so much, but I've been holding out in case of an official release. If there is an official copy that comes out, then I'd trash the bootleg because an official version always looks and sounds much better. It's on the studios to put it out there!

People who own physical media, i believe, also care about quality. And thats where i have issues with streaming. My other issue is whenever licenses start expiring and movies start to disappear and theres no longer a way to watch them. Because of this, I just purchased a copy of Barbarian as a booklegged bluray (i watched it twice in theaters). If it ever "disappears" from streaming platforms, i own a copy. However, bootlegged versions will never look as good as an actual copy released from the studio. Whenever Barbarian comes out officially, i will be buying it again. Loved the video man!

I can't afford all these streaming services so I've been considering getting Obi Wan! and a few movies that are available that I want. Prey Samaritan and Netflix movies that don't look to having a physical release. I'm also looking for a TV series that is unavailable or OOP and costs way too much. Several of these won't likely release these so Bootleg will likely be my only option. I

Darn it, quite awhile ago I bought the Spanish version of True Lies Bluray shipped from Amazon sold via a 3rd party seller. I never thought for a second they would be dealing in Bootleg? I figured like some disc just not for sale in US but elsewhere released but now realized not anywhere. Yikes, glad only one in my collection like that... Thanks for information and your views are spot on.

If a film/series I want has an official release and is in print I'll buy it, because "owning" is part of the appeal. But that's not an option I'll take the bootleg instead, and this is non-negotiable. Streaming services are the antithesis of ownership and I have zero interest in supporting that business model.

But you said in a previous video about streaming if you buy it digitally you never really own it? If the streamer loses the rights or goes bust. Some films and TV may never get a physical release so what do you do digital, torrent, bootleg?

Sometimes bootlegs are necessary. For example I have the complete MCU on blu ray including the ABC and Netflix shows etc. I have Daredevil season 1 and 2 on Blu-ray but they never made season 3 on physical media as well as l some of the other Netflix shows. Also all the MCU shows on Disney+ aren’t on physical media either. I’m still supporting them by streaming the show when they release but I want to also have it on my shelf to complete my collection.
