Would you rather spend 3 weeks writing a design document on why a button should be moved left by 1 pixel, while surfing Reddit? Or would you rather code up distributed asynchronous systems after a hardcore design brainstorm?

Brainstorms all the way. I once had to produce an 8 page design/review doc for sign-off by higher uppers to change one line in a production DB stored procedure. It’s amazing that many managers at this late stage continue to preside over heavy counter-productive processes that kill efficiency and get in the way of innovation. Miss the days when we brainstormed then quickly kicked off the proof of concept, evolving the design as we went along.

There's pros and cons I definitely agree with most of what you said. Working at small companies where you have a huge impact is really fulfilling and there is no / little "corporate". Its good to try both out and see what you like, as long as you keep learning.

About the impact part. I think when you factor in the scale the impact magnifies. Although for a developer it’s a small change to add a button on some page, the impact is huge for the company.
@CodingJesus
@CodingJesus 4 жыл бұрын
I hear your point, but I don't think that, even if the impact to the company is considered large, people cannot attribute the change to you as a developer given that you're a cog in a 100'000 developer machine.

You are very smart I like when you said a wise man does not concern himself with trying to look good for other people. I think that might be in the Bible to be honest because I know there is something in there that says that if you are going to do something good for someone you do not do it in front of them where they can see because if you do that then it’s like you’re showing off and I know that is in the Bible so there is a connection there and that is very smart think what you just said I really liked it

I want you to talk about what is the best way for someone who knows nothing about the stock market to be able to put their money somewhere and for it to grow the fastest way for that to happen for dummies like me. Seriously you are very smart. In my opinion I would put it in gold then maybe some silver but mostly gold and Tesla but that is just me. I honestly don’t know anything really. But that’s just my opinion let me know if I’m right and I think you should do a video to let people know how they could really grow their money the fastest with just putting their money in the smartest things and what those smart things are and maybe when to put the most money and what stocks like the timing

Only point I somewhat disagree with is about working on cuttingedge/forefront of technology. Of course, it depends on where you work and what you're working on. I'm not as fond of the more frontend work, but hey, different strokes for different folks. We've had new grads get to work on things like new networking protocols and application protocols, participate in IETF and IEEE meetings for design brainstorming/reviews, etc. Lots of internal C++ libraries that end up making it into the C++ standard as well.

Yeap, you are right. FANG has done a great propaganda job in fooling people that they are the definition of tech and they set the tech culture as well. I would say that they are good for learning how to build software at scale, but definitely not long-term places for your career, except if you were employee number 500 or below, which in those cases you are probably just an investor or a VC by now. Also, culture really matters these days. If you are a capitalist or a conservative person, you really have to be very careful where you go to work. I don't think this needs much explanation.

Thanks for telling me that I don't have to work at google to be good. Currently a year 2 computer sci kid, and I Felt like I was to focused and brainwashed. It's good but I have interned in big tech (rakuten ) and the work they do is mediocre. I enjoyed my time in startups when I was not paid but I m investing so much into myself. However I am really insecure as gpa is something I have to grind real hard in and I kinda tie my gpa to my intelligence/dev. And that's why I put google on a pedestal as it's where all the all rounders go. Great video and I hope you make a video talking about gpa and strategies if your gpa isn't the first class Suma cum laude, and how we can leverage pet projects to still be successful

This all shouldn't be about working at FAANG. When sb acquired appropriate skills should definitely try his own web/mobile app to have multiple sources of cash flow. When you work in corporate environment you should forget about any free time and also any time for your own projects which leads to a slavish attitude. This is the biggest issue here.

I agree with this for the most part, but I think you are overstating the lack of impact in a FAANG company. At big tech, you can leverage virtually infinite resources to your advantage, and have more impact to the outside world than a startup would. You are correct that you might not be revolutionary, but I think the scale at which faang operates gives you more absolute impact. For example, let's say you work at Google, and you decrease the deployment time of GCP compute instances by 1% in 5 of the largest zones. The downstream impacts probably mean 10s of millions in downstream savings in time for millions of developers. I would think of working at FAANG as getting in a giant mech suit that gives 10x more power. However, your actual task will be hyper focused and you might end up working a year on implementing the example above. I feel like the work can be engaging, and extremely impactful, but not innovative (most of the time). That being said, I still agree with you and working at a startup is much more stimulating and rewarding. I like startups because there usually is greater breadth of technical challenges, less bureaucracy and a greater sense of innovation.

I agree especially for retail investors I don’t think anyone should invest in any of these companies because they’re selling our personal information to each other and they are using us for marketing techniques so that was we will spend money on their products so why would we invest into something like that? I think we need to be investing into things that are actually good for us and good for the country and our environment like Tesla LOL I am all in on Tesla. I think everyone should go all in on Tesla and of course the Memes sucks I like that because if you can beat this short sellers and if you know how to do it right if everyone will just buy the asking price and hold and don’t sell you could cause a short squeeze so big that your shares could be equal to $1000 per share if you all buy and hold and you have to buy the asking price and not wait for it to go down because that just lets the short sellers fill their short positions at a lower price and that’s not what you want you want to force them to pay a higher price so you don’t want to sell if you’re going to buy the meme stocks like GME & AMC

FAANG isn’t the be all and end all. And great point about culture however that sort of culture is also in a lot of start ups and small firms and even prop trading firms, you just have to find what’s best for you. The points about impact were waffling. There’s a lot of impact you can make at FAANG. Perhaps research before minimising people’s jobs to just fixing buttons ? “Not cutting edge” really? That’s not true in any way sure there’s other great companies at the top of the field especially because many of them are specialised but FAANG does research too to stay competitive so there’s no way you can claim this as a fact. The best advice to anyone starting out is to work for a company they can learn the a lot from and that is a culture fit for you, that can definitely be at FAANG. Most people at these companies don’t brag either. This video is just bitter tbh
@CodingJesus
@CodingJesus 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, Google has advanced research divisions. But as a new software engineer (which is who the audience of this video is, primarily university students) you’ll have much more of an impact at a firm with 50 employees than one with 100,000.
@harold3802
@harold3802 3 жыл бұрын
@@CodingJesus I definitely agree with that point but it depends on what career path, someone might decide to be at the same firm for years and they’ll definitely learn a lot and grow even if it’s large scale, better and wider options available as well if they think of switching jobs .

Startups > FAANG for me... higher visibility, more responsibility, greater learning opportunities, wider impact across the entire stack, better variation in work and technologies used, far better prep as far as going down the startup entrepreneur route (in a technical capacity) versus trying to cultivate a CV that’ll keep me “relevant” to hiring managers at corporate fads for the next 20 years... Candidate: I worked at and then at . Recruiter: Excellent. Can you tell me what significant technical contributions you made while in these roles? You specifically I mean. Candidate: 👁👄👁

Assuming that people who work at FAANG don't make any significant technical contributions is the most idiotic thing I've ever read. After working at FAANG hiring managers and recruiters are obsessed with my CV and experience. Not the same story when I worked at a smaller startup. Not everyone wants to work at a small startup with bad WLB and low pay when they can work at a FAANG and make much more money and have it on their resume making it easier to interview around with different companies in order to get a higher compensation.
