Lever actions have become a symbol of the American West, and as Texan I am supposed to have a soft spot for them. However that is one stereotype to which I do not conform.
In this episode of TFBTV, I list a few reasons why I have never held lever guns in high regard as well as the 30-30 cartridge.

Why I don't like lever actions: 1. Many are ambidextrous 2. They're easy to use on horseback 3. The calibers they're offered in range from "brush gun" to "elephant killer" 4. They're faster to chamber than a bolt gun 5. They have higher capacity than a bolt gun 6. I'm not pretending I live in an 80s action movie - where 30 ninjas are going to repel through my skylights with AKs... but also, happen to all be bad enough shots that _any_ rifle in my hands will take them all out. Oh, wait. Those are the reasons I _do_ like lever actions! My fault. You were saying?

@@TheCharleseye '' They're faster to chamber than a bolt gun'' ''They have higher capacity than a bolt gun'' these are all supposed to imply you can put more rounds down range faster with a lever gun than a bolt gun. One can hold onto a factory handle, but if your hanging off a cliff and need to grab on to something well your sh*t out of luck cause you'll slide right down (the exterior handles are flat). The interior handle is so well hidden, a friend of mine whose had the car for three yrs now only just discovered it because I was screwing around. There is also a button, but what happens when the battery dies and you don't know where the handle is.

Second point might be valid but I argue the speed gained on firing speed in general when levers lose more time in the loading vs the bolts with clips. You might get bullets flying in more "speedy" manner from lever but you are bound to lose when reloading starts.

The flaw in this entire presentation is that the optimality of any firearm depends on the demands being placed on the firearm by the task at hand and the environment in which it is being used. Determining the appropriateness of a firearm is not a conversation stripped of context. If the environment is the rolling hills of Colorado with deer out at 400-500 yds, no one is going to argue that the 30-30 weapon is optimal. By the same token, at 50 yds in the brush, getting into a heated discussion over fine-tuned ballistics of various spitzer bullets is almost meaningless and the flat nose of a 30-30 meaningful. Arguing about a class of rifle without context is like arguing about the best knife in the kitchen without starting with the intended usage. Most chefs have an assortment of knives, each for a specific purpose.

2023 The Lever Actions are still pertinent and even more than 20 yrs ago. 1) Do you need a quick repeater but you cannot own a semi or full auto rifle ? Lever has your back. 2) Do you need a Bison or Bear gun ? Lever has your back. This review shows the weakness of theoretical constructs and avoids the need of the momment. Mission parameters drive the choice of tools. To the KZfaqr who made this video: What was your mission in the first place - you didn't tell us in this video so we assume that you don't even know what you were supposed to be doing; douche meister.

Your kinda missing the point on this one because not every gun made has to have a military use to be a good gun. Your example of the 30/30 exposes this perfectly because according to you it is a round that shouldn't exist but is perfectly matched for many hunting environments where the ability to shoot through a twig that is between the shooter and deer is more important than being able to shoot 1000 yards or whatever. Would you also determine that the 22lr is useless because there are other calibers designed to shoot farther or whatever?
@Riceball01
@Riceball01 8 жыл бұрын
Alex did state the flaws of the 30-30 round does not come from its power, or lack there of, alone. Going by what he quoted Nathaniel F., it's a round that's the size of a .308 but with the power of 7.62x39; in other words, a large round without that much power (for its size).
@Nikoesht
@Nikoesht 8 жыл бұрын
22LR exists because of cost and LACK of power, if you could buy 5.56 for the same price I'm sure you would see it almost fade out as well.
@Nathaniel_F
@Nathaniel_F 8 жыл бұрын
.30-30 has a little more power than 7.62x39 at the muzzle, but it loses this shockingly quickly. By 60 yards or so, the 7.62x39 is outperforming it, even with lighter bullets. That's not to say it's unsuitable for deer or anything, but in today's world of relatively expensive lever-actions (compared to 7.62x39 and .308 guns, even new ones), there's little reason to bother with the caliber.
@Riceball01
@Riceball01 8 жыл бұрын
Nathaniel F So, do you think that if somebody came out with a rimmed 7.62x39 and a lever action chambered for it it would be a good thing? Or maybe somehow adapt a lever action to safely accept 7.65x39.
@Nathaniel_F
@Nathaniel_F 8 жыл бұрын
No because lever actions kind of blow in my opinion. Just buy a CZ 527, and have a gun that's lighter, more reliable, way easier to clean, way more accurate, way easier to unload, way handier, and cheaper.

Okay let's play by your standards on this then, since you are trying to compare apples to oranges and comparing them to miliatary weapons, your precious bolt guns abousoultly suck when it comes to home defense, modern day bolt guns don't usually come with iron sights so then you are left with a scope which would be hindering and borderline usless if someone is standing in your hallway 15 yards away, they are slow as hell to chamber a round compared to lever action so when you throw that in with having to find your target through a scope you're gonna have a bad time, plus taking capacity in comparison with lever guns, lever guns almost always usually hold more, do you see how stupid it sounds to compare two guns that have completely different purposes? It's like buying a 50 bmg for squirrel hunting, it's illogical to even try and link the two

It's far from reality to say an ak-47 round and the 30-30 are in any way similar. Both bullets exit their barrels at a bit over 2200 fps but the ak bullet is 123 grains while the 30-30 is 170 grains. That is nearly a 500 foot pound difference in muzzle energy. This is a significant difference in ballistics.

I’d argue from a military perspective, the one you’re going for, bolt actions are just as obsolete as lever actions. They’re not as fast as semi auto and they require extra training. Rn the US military is upgrading all their old bolt action sniper rifles to AR-platform snipers chambered in things like .308 and .338 lapua. Sure, .50 cal anti material rifles are still bolt actions, but trust me when I say they won’t be 5-10 years from now. Other military’s have already made bolt actions obsolete. Every rifle in your military being the same platform means you only really need to train your soldiers on one, maybe two firearms and the rest they should already have a good grasp on. Russia’s been doing it for years, almost all their smallarms operate like an AK, and so now the US is catching up and doing the same with the AR platform It’s the hard truth, bolt actions are only viable as commercial toys for people to hunt or plink with, just like lever actions. Not to say that’s a bad thing. Personally I feel a heavy clunky 30-30 is less obstructed by foliage than a lean spitzer like a .308 but that’s just me. Every person has their own preferences

1. Lever guns are the original "pistol caliber carbines" 2. Lever guns are higher capacity than most revolvers in the same cartridge 3. Lever guns are great for places you cannot have "normal" Semi-autos; CA, NY etc. 4. Lever guns can be reloaded while the action is still closed, unlike most bolt guns. Thus enabling you to have "emergency firepower" 5. Lever guns are easier to cycle and keep on target than pump actions 6. Most lever gun cartridges will fly farther and flatter than a 12 gauge slug 7. Lever guns are generally lighter than most other action types; Marlin 336C in 30-30 is 7 pounds, that is lighter than most AKs 8. It is easier to mount optics to a lever gun than to an AK; some AK variants can't take any optic mounts 9. 30-30 was ahead of its time 10. Lever guns are easy to maintain and clean

I say that 30-30 was ahead of its time because it is very comparable to 7.62x39 but it had a 50 year start. Also it was one of the first cartridges to be purpose built for smokeless powder, that is pretty cutting edge. On maintenance; one only needs to oil the action just like a bolt gun, much simpler than most semi-auto maintenance schedules.
@magickaldood
@magickaldood 8 жыл бұрын
I think you mean outdated or outmoded; obsolete would imply they are no longer in use but I can confirm that I have personally used one in the last few months.
@Nathaniel_F
@Nathaniel_F 8 жыл бұрын
Magickaldood .30-30 was the first commercial cartridge to be designed for smokeless powder, but that was nearly a decade after military cartridges were designed for smokeless, and Winchester couldn't even design the .30-30 to be very high pressure because the actions wouldn't support that. So it's lame and late to the party on that one. As for being comparable to 7.62x39... Well, lots of rounds from that period are as comparable to 7.62x39 as .30-30 is, but we don't keep using them because time moves on and things become obsolete. Not .30-30 though, because people keep wanting to look like John Wayne and will pay Marlin $550 for a cast piece of crap to that end. Taking a part the normal lever-actions (94, 336) is a giant pain in the butt. Bolt-action disassembly, in comparison, is basically a two-step process. So if your idea of "maintenance" is just squirting CLP into the action every few months on a shooting schedule of tens of rounds a year, then OK, but any actual maintenance is a much bigger chore with a lever gun than a bolt or semiauto.

@bigdiccmarty9335
@bigdiccmarty9335 5 жыл бұрын
It all depends on the situation, in this case woodchucks are my target, the weapon I am using is light in weight, and recoil, a bolt version would be fine in prone, a lever version not as much so. But perhaps a powerful bolt action, like a 30-06, I might lose sight picture when I fire, but with training, you can keep the recoil from messing up your sights, but a lever gun from the prone will prevent you from doing this ever. There are draw backs to both types. Basically all lever guns let you keep a sight picture while cycling the action from any position, except prone, not all bolt actions allow this, but you can cycle a bolt from any position. But as you say, self defense? From 150 yards? That might be a tough sell in a court room. And in combat, no one uses lever guns, because semi, and full auto is a thing, so realistically, it's a what if/so what question, if I am to be perfectly fair.

***** That reason was cost, not effectiveness. If weapons were adopted based solely on effectiveness, I suspect that clip-fed Winchester 1895s would have caught on rather well. Most folks who don't make a habit of spending time in warzones will not need to reload in a defensive shooting. Therefore, the ability quickly fire a low-recoil round beats out the ability to use stripper clips of often-dubious reliability. Even if reloading is necessary, thumbing rounds into a loading gate is often easier than using stripper clips, and does not force the user to take the weapon out of action for reloading.

*Please hear me out; read my whole comment. I’m glad you said “why I don’t like lever guns” and not “Why lever guns are bad”, but there’s still a great many things you might not know. Most hunters still hold 30/30s in very high regard, even the ones that don’t use them. If you ask me, there is no replacement for a short handy lever gun for pushing out thick brush. When you’re crawling on your hands and knees through autumn olives growing 10”apart, literally dragging your gun through the dirt, you’ll be very glad you took a lever gun and not an expensive bolt gun with a scope and 24”barrel. Trust me, I have both. The points you present do have some merit, but there’s so many other view points that you’ve never considered. There’s a tool for every job, and sometimes the things that make a gun terrible for one task make it brilliant at another. A lot of times, actually. You seem like an intelligent and reasonable man, so I gave you an intelligent and reasonable response, but more important, one that is based on experiences that I’ve built over many years, and on the wisdom of guys with 50+ years of experience. @@roonbare2769 I know why bolt guns were adopted, cost and logistics are a thing, but the main reason was timing. Bolt actions predate the rimfire cartridge (with the needle rifles) so already has a military presence when centrefire black powder rounds became the norm. At the time lever actions were in pistol rounds, which militaries of the time did not want for front line infantry. So smokeless powder comes about and by 1894 everyone pretty much has a bolt gun in a smokeless chambering. So why in 1894 would you adopt a lever gun? That’s the big issue, if you have a rifle already why would you spend huge amounts to switch system to something that is worse; got to remember in the 19th century there is no lever gun with a packet loading system exists, that alone is a reason to dismiss the lever gun for frontline military use. No idea what lever action had a “manlicher style magazine”, even if it existed what can it do that a straight pull cannot? " The non tubular magazine levergun outperforms the boltgun in every respect except for "possibly" firing while prone for some sissy sized dudes." - Such as what? They reload more slowly (outside of the ~WW1 era 1895s which came way too late for use outside of the WW1 demand for anything that shoots) and they don’t shoot any faster in full power chamberings; at least not effectively, if at all faster, for most people.

@@TheAlexagius again your information is inaccurate ....you keep assuming things that are not true. Again you are adled by your lack of understanding : thinking all leverguns are tube fed mags . They are / were not. Several winchester models fired full power spitzer (pointy bullets ) loaded from stripper clips in the top of the action . In fact boltguns copied this from manlicher who was in turn copied by Winchester . Again....MOST is not ALL shooters given the same hours of practice with each rifle , WILL fire followups with a levergun MUCH faster than even a strait pull bolt (hence why its not even a thing anymore) . You can kid yourself all you want, boltguns are now, and always will be MUCH slower than leverguns on repeating fire . Only someone with ZERO to NO time operating both actions would even question that. Modern leverguns with gear driven rotating bolts, box mags, and free floated barrels , such as the browning blr, and the henery long range... ARE superior to boltguns in EVERY respect accept perhaps some "slightly " increased accuracy . Though both are very fine accuracy out to 800 , boltguns are just very very fine accuracy . So please , stop making yourself look silly. Not all leverguns are tube fed single round loaders, and haven't been for a hundred years . The savage model 99 was an insanely popular rifle over half a century ago (floated barrel, box fed, 300 savage "pointy bullet " caliber). The fact you probably have no knowledge of these very common leverguns reveals : you have no practical application, youngin, you just blowin smoke.

For hunting a lever gun still packs much easier in a scabbard or backpack with no bolt handle to snag anywhere. Lever guns in calibers like 35 rem. and 32 special are still very good brush guns for whitetail hunting. And you can ask any Alaskan guide in grizzly country, the marlin 1895 in 45-70 with +p+ loads is king. Here in Alaska I trust my life to my 45-70 and no bolt gun will ever take its place.

I don't think people are scoffing at his opinion, rather that he states his opinions like facts. The only fact I heard in the video was that it is harder to operate a lever action in prone than a bolt action which is due to design. The rest was opinion. In my opinion the lever action is almost twice as fast to shoot, the 30-30 caliber is not dead as it is keeps deer meat in the freezer and as a fact the 30-30 delivers 1900 ft lbs as compared to 1500 ft lbs of out of the 7.62x39. In my opinion its easier to carry a lever action as it is shorter, and thinner than most bolt guns in the brush of the south east.

Part of appreciating history is understanding its place; I think Alex does that in the video. He notes the lever-action's place in history, and takes it from there. If we're being honest, lever-actions primarily persist because of the Hollywood Western films that prominently featured them. We don't see, for example, large demand for Trapdoor or Rolling Block clones or lookalikes, even though the lever-action is on a fundamental level just as obsolete as those designs. So what's "disappointing" about calling a spade a spade? Not indulging this Hollywood-born idea that the lever-action is just as relevant today as it was in 1860? Or just that someone likes different guns than you do?

So he hates tube fed shotguns for the same reason? They can not be fed from a Stripper Clip either. They too must be a loaded through a gate. You run a Lever Action just like you run a tactical shotgun... Only carrying your ammo on the Strong Side instead of the Weak Side. You Load as you Go. Now - if he's talking about a Henry Lever Action - well - then I agree. I dislike Henry rifles. Because of it's truly poor loading manual. But Winchester, Marlin, and now Mossberg are viable rifle even in these modern times. You just have to get used to how they run. Just like you would with a Bolt Gun... especially any bolt gun that's fed from a stripper clip.

WhippedSauce it's an unfair comparison due to the relative age of both gun types and their different applications in this case you are basically compairing as close range rapid fire rifle with a long range rifle they have different uses and thus are built differnetly given most combat situations a lever action would have seen the shooter was on his feet or at most crouching and keeping on site with your target isn't needed the issues he brings up aren't issues the gun was made to deal with this is basically complaining a sub machine gun isn't performing as well as a lee enfield rifle at long range

You can shoot the AR from prone but anything more than a 20 round mag is going to interfere. Side loading rounds is a huge advantage -- not having to wait until empty -- you can just top off the last 2 shots any time. No need to carry another magazine, just a few rounds tucked into the stock. Quick action, light weight and easy to wield carbine with plenty of power. It's definitely a great hunting rifle. I'm not sure why you based your decision solely on it's military application. I think historically this gun had most success as a versatile hunting rifle and frontier defense gun -- which it is well suited.

Come on, just quit it with the clickbate titles/topics, it´s getting old. Have fun trying to load your mauser for a quick follow up shot when mr. Grizzly decides you look like lunch. The guy holding a levergun in 45-70, with his hand allready where it needs to be... yeah you probably get the point. Also many (most) countries don´t allow hunting with AR15 type rifles so you have to choose between a levergun and a "repeater" of mauser etc type. Most would agree that for animals who pose no threat the mauser/ruger/sako etc action is better because of the rigidity and accuracy of the guns but when the animal might kill you if you are not fast enough, nothing (legal) beats a levergun.

While your points are all valid Alex, you have to admit that the title of this video is a bit inflammatory to an American audience. Own one or not, the lever gun is iconic and has a special place in the heart of most American shooters. You might as well have made a video called "Why I think American Bald Eagles Should be Turned into Cat Food." And it's not a _Lonesome Dove_ thing, by the way; I was thinking more Chuck Connors in _The Rifleman_ :D

TFB TV is no stranger to clickbait titles for sure, but honestly this one is pretty tame - it's not as if he called it 'Why Lever Actions are Useless and Anyone Who Says Otherwise is a Moron;' he just says he doesn't like them. If that's inflammatory to an American audience, then we as a nation need a major reality check. One of the things that made America great was freedom to disagree, in thought and practice, with prevailing thought. If those days are over, even among firearm enthusiasts, then we don't deserve a great America.

@powerdog242
@powerdog242 6 жыл бұрын
But then again, the bolt action fanboys here are making a fallacious argument from features. Just because something has all sorts of nifty features doesn’t mean IT is necessarily better either. After all, those fancy features may be utterly irrelevant to what you’re actually doing. So it is with bolt guns. What REALLY matters in a hunting gun is a cartridge powerful enough to kill what you’re shooting at, in a gun that’s accurate enough to reliably kill the game you’re shooting at, at the range you’re shooting from. For most people, the game is deer, which has a vital area (heart and lungs) 9 inches in diameter. And the average distance a deer is shot at is 80 yards. At those ranges, any decently made rifle or carbine-at any price point, of any action type, shooting nearly any centerfire cartridge, and using any style of sights-is more than adequate to do what needs to be done to kill the game, even at twice or three times the range. So any differences between them, though they may seem significant to the bystander unfamiliar with the actual task at hand, are not enough to matter appreciably in the final summation.
@ShadeSlayer1911
@ShadeSlayer1911 6 жыл бұрын
powerdog242 see, here's the thing though. Yeah, lever actions are good enough. But that doesn't defeat the argument that the bolt gun is superior. Here's the proof: the military still uses bolt guns, but never any lever guns. The lever gun really only beats the bolt gun by speed, but not by enough to make up for all of its other shortcomings to the bolt gun. For that, you have semi auto rifle. I'm not saying that lever guns aren't great in their own right, nor that you are wrong for prefering bolt guns over lever guns. And sure, 90 percent of what a person would need a rifle for, a lever gun would do just fine. But a bolt gun is still objectively superior overall. You may not ever need a bolt gun to get the job done, but it's still better. Face it, the main reason why people like lever guns over bolt guns is because of the old west fanboyism and the subjective preference for the lever action feel. That's not a bad thing, it just doesn't make lever guns better than bolt guns.
